ਸਲੋਕ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ salok mahalaa 5 | Salok, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ik oankaar satigur prasaad | One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਤੇ ਸੇਈ ਜਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨ ਮੋੜੰਨਿੑ ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਿਞਾਤਾ ਸਾਈ ॥ rate seee ji mukh na morrana jinaee siyaataa saaee | They alone are imbued with the Lord, who do not turn their faces away from Him - they realize Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਝੜਿ ਝੜਿ ਪਵਦੇ ਕਚੇ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਕਾਰਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥੧॥ jharr jharr pavade kache birahee jinaa kaar na aaee |1| The false, immature lovers do not know the way of love, and so they fall. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਣੀ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਪਾਟ ਪਟੰਬਰ ਭਾਹੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲੇ ॥ dhanee vihoonaa paatt pattanbar bhaahee setee jaale | Without my Master, I will burn my silk and satin clothes in the fire. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧੂੜੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੁਡੰਦੜੀ ਸੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੈ ਸਹ ਨਾਲੇ ॥੨॥ dhoorree vich luddandarree sohaan naanak tai seh naale |2| Even rolling in the dust, I look beautiful, O Nanak, if my Husband Lord is with me. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅਰਾਧੀਐ ਨਾਮਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ॥ gur kai sabad araadheeai naam rang bairaag | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, I worship and adore the Naam, with love and balanced detachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਤੇ ਪੰਚ ਬੈਰਾਈਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਫਲ ਮਾਰੂ ਇਹੁ ਰਾਗੁ ॥੩॥ jeete panch bairaaeea naanak safal maaroo ihu raag |3| When the five enemies are overcome, O Nanak, this musical measure of Raga Maaroo becomes frtuiful. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾਂ ਮੂੰ ਇਕੁ ਤ ਲਖ ਤਉ ਜਿਤੀ ਪਿਨਣੇ ਦਰਿ ਕਿਤੜੇ ॥ jaan moon ik ta lakh tau jitee pinane dar kitarre | When I have the One Lord, I have tens of thousands. Otherwise, people like me beg from door to door. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਾਮਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਗਇਓ ਜਨੰਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਸੋ ਵਿਸਰੇ ॥੪॥ baaman birathaa geo janam jin keeto so visare |4| O Brahmin, your life has passed away uselessly; you have forgotten the One who created you. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਸੋ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੀਐ ਕਬਹੂ ਨ ਫੀਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ soratth so ras peejeeai kabahoo na feekaa hoe | In Raga Sorat’h, drink in this sublime essence, which never loses its taste. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਈਅਹਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੫॥ naanak raam naam gun gaaeeeh daragah niramal soe |5| O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord’s Name, one’s reputation is immaculate in the Court of the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ਤਿਨ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮਾਰਈ ॥ jo prabh rakhe aap tin koe na maaree | No one can kill those whom God Himself protects. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਰਈ ॥ andar naam nidhaan sadaa gun saaree | The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within them. They cherish His Glorious Virtues forever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕਾ ਟੇਕ ਅਗੰਮ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਾਰਈ ॥ ekaa ttek agam man tan prabh dhaaree | They take the Support of the One, the Inaccessible Lord; they enshrine God in their mind and body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਉਤਾਰਈ ॥ lagaa rang apaar ko na utaaree | They are imbued with the Love of the Infinite Lord, and no one can wipe it away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਰਈ ॥ guramukh har gun gaae sehaj sukh saaree | The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord; they obtain the most excellent celestial peace and poise. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਉਰਿ ਹਾਰਈ ॥੬॥ naanak naam nidhaan ridai ur haaree |6| O Nanak, they enshrine the treasure of the Naam in their hearts. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਚੰਗਾ ਮਾਨਿ ਦੁਯੀ ਗਣਤ ਲਾਹਿ ॥ kare su changaa maan duyee ganat laeh | Whatever God does, accept that as good; leave behind all other judgements. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪਣੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿ ਆਪੇ ਲੈਹੁ ਲਾਇ ॥ apanee nadar nihaal aape laihu laae | He shall cast His Glance of Grace, and attach you to Himself. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਮਤੀ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ jan dehu matee upades vichahu bharam jaae | Instruct yourself with the Teachings, and doubt will depart from within. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲੇਖੁ ਸੋਈ ਸਭ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ jo dhur likhiaa lekh soee sabh kamaae | Everyone does that which is pre-ordained by destiny. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕਛੁ ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਵਸਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ sabh kachh tis dai vas doojee naeh jaae | Everything is under His control; there is no other place at all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖ ਅਨਦ ਭਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੭॥ naanak sukh anad bhe prabh kee man rajaae |7| Nanak is in peace and bliss, accepting the Will of God. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਜਿਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਆ ਸੇਈ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥ gur pooraa jin simariaa seee bhe nihaal | Those who meditate in remembrance on the Perfect Guru, are exalted and uplifted. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਰਾਧਣਾ ਕਾਰਜੁ ਆਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੮॥ naanak naam araadhanaa kaaraj aavai raas |8| O Nanak, dwelling on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, all affairs are resolved. ||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਾਏ ਹਾਇ ॥ paapee karam kamaavade karade haae haae | The sinners act, and generate bad karma, and then they weep and wail. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਉ ਮਥਨਿ ਮਾਧਾਣੀਆ ਤਿਉ ਮਥੇ ਧ੍ਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੯॥ naanak jiau mathan maadhaaneea tiau mathe dhram raae |9| O Nanak, just as the churning stick churns the butter, so does the Righteous Judge of Dharma churn them. ||9|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਨਿ ਸਾਜਨਾ ਜਨਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜੀਤਿ ॥ naam dhiaaein saajanaa janam padaarath jeet | Meditating on the Naam, O friend, the treasure of life is won. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਧਰਮ ਐਸੇ ਚਵਹਿ ਕੀਤੋ ਭਵਨੁ ਪੁਨੀਤ ॥੧੦॥ naanak dharam aise chaveh keeto bhavan puneet |10| O Nanak, speaking in Righteousness, one’s world becomes sanctified. ||10|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੁਭੜੀ ਕੁਥਾਇ ਮਿਠੀ ਗਲਣਿ ਕੁਮੰਤ੍ਰੀਆ ॥ khubharree kuthaae mitthee galan kumantreea | I am stuck in an evil place, trusting the sweet words of an evil advisor. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇਈ ਉਬਰੇ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹਿ ॥੧੧॥ naanak seee ubare jinaa bhaag mathaeh |11| O Nanak, they alone are saved, who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads. ||11|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਸਵੰਨਿੑ ਜੋ ਰਤੇ ਸਹ ਆਪਣੈ ॥ sutarre sukhee savana jo rate seh aapanai | They alone sleep and dream in peace, who are imbued with the Love of their Husband Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਵਿਛੋਹਾ ਧਣੀ ਸਉ ਅਠੇ ਪਹਰ ਲਵੰਨਿੑ ॥੧੨॥ prem vichhohaa dhanee sau atthe pehar lavana |12| Those who have been separated from the Love of their Master, scream and cry twenty-four hours a day. ||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਤੜੇ ਅਸੰਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਝੂਠੀ ਕਾਰਣੇ ॥ sutarre asankh maaeaa jhootthee kaarane | Millions are asleep, in the false illusion of Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਜਾਗੰਨਿੑ ਜਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਣੇ ॥੧੩॥ naanak se jaagana ji rasanaa naam uchaarane |13| O Nanak, they alone are awake and aware, who chant the Naam with their tongues. ||13|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਪੇਖਿ ਭੁਲਣੇ ਵੁਠੇ ਨਗਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ॥ mrig tisanaa pekh bhulane vutthe nagar gandhrab | Seeing the mirage, the optical illusion, the people are confused and deluded. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਅਰਾਧਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਫਬ ॥੧੪॥ jinee sach araadhiaa naanak man tan fab |14| Those who worship and adore the True Lord, O Nanak, their minds and bodies are beautiful. ||14|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੰਮ੍ਰਥ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ patit udhaaran paarabraham samrath purakh apaar | The All-powerful Supreme Lord God, the Infinite Primal Being, is the Saving Grace of sinners. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
