ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੪੧॥ naanak kee prabh benatee har bhaavai bakhas milaae |41| Nanak offers this prayer: O Lord God, please forgive me, and unite me with Yourself. ||41|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਨਾ ਸੁਝੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੁ ॥ man aavan jaan na sujhee naa sujhai darabaar | The mortal being does not understand the comings and goings of reincarnation; he does not see the Court of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਪਲੇਟਿਆ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥ maaeaa mohi palettiaa antar agiaan gubaar | He is wrapped up in emotional attachment and Maya, and within his being is the darkness of ignorance. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਬ ਨਰੁ ਸੁਤਾ ਜਾਗਿਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਡੰਡੁ ਲਗਾ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰੁ ॥ tab nar sutaa jaagiaa sir ddandd lagaa bahu bhaar | The sleeping person wakes, only when he is hit on the head by a heavy club. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਾਂ ਕਰਾਂ ਉਪਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਸੇ ਪਾਇਨਿ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ guramukhaan karaan upar har chetiaa se paaein mokh duaar | The Gurmukhs dwell upon the Lord; they find the door of salvation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਪਿ ਓਹਿ ਉਧਰੇ ਸਭ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਤਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ॥੪੨॥ naanak aap ohi udhare sabh kuttanb tare paravaar |42| O Nanak, they themselves are saved, and all their relatives are carried across as well. ||42|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਆ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ sabad marai so muaa jaapai | Whoever dies in the Word of the Shabad, is known to be truly dead. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੈ ॥ gur parasaadee har ras dhraapai | By Guru’s Grace, the mortal is satisfied by the sublime essence of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ॥ har darageh gur sabad siyaapai | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, he is recognized in the Court of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਆ ਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ bin sabadai muaa hai sabh koe | Without the Shabad, everyone is dead. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਮੁਆ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਖੋਇ ॥ manamukh muaa apunaa janam khoe | The self-willed manmukh dies; his life is wasted. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਅੰਤਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਰੋਇ ॥ har naam na cheteh ant dukh roe | Those who do not remember the Name of the Lord, shall cry in pain in the end. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪੩॥ naanak karataa kare su hoe |43| O Nanak, whatever the Creator Lord does, comes to pass. ||43|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੁਢੇ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥ guramukh budte kade naahee jinaa antar surat giaan | The Gurmukhs never grow old; within them is intuitive understanding and spiritual wisdom. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥ sadaa sadaa har gun raveh antar sehaj dhiaan | They chant the Praises of the Lord, forever and ever; deep within, they intuitively meditate on the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਇ ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਰਹਹਿ ਦੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨਿ ॥ oe sadaa anand bibek raheh dukh sukh ek samaan | They dwell forever in blissful knowledge of the Lord; they look upon pain and pleasure as one and the same. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਨਾ ਨਦਰੀ ਇਕੋ ਆਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨੁ ॥੪੪॥ tinaa nadaree iko aaeaa sabh aatam raam pachhaan |44| They see the One Lord in all, and realize the Lord, the Supreme Soul of all. ||44|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ manamukh baalak biradh samaan hai jinaa antar har surat naahee | The self-willed manmukhs are like stupid children; they do not keep the Lord in their thoughts. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਵਿਚਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਸਭ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੈ ਜਾਂਹੀ ॥ vich haumai karam kamaavade sabh dharam raae kai jaanhee | They do all their deeds in egotism, and they must answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਛੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ guramukh hachhe niramale gur kai sabad subhaae | The Gurmukhs are good and immaculately pure; they are embellished and exalted with the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਨਾ ਮੈਲੁ ਪਤੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਜਿ ਚਲਨਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਾਇ ॥ onaa mail patang na lagee ji chalan satigur bhaae | Not even a tiny bit of filth sticks to them; they walk in harmony with the Will of the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧੋਵਣ ਪਾਇ ॥ manamukh jootth na utarai je sau dhovan paae | The filth of the manmukhs is not washed away, even if they wash hundreds of times. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੇਲਿਅਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪੫॥ naanak guramukh melian gur kai ank samaae |45| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs are united with the Lord; they merge into the Guru’s Being. ||45|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬੁਰਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਸਿਝੈ ॥ buraa kare su kehaa sijhai | How can someone do bad things, and still live with himself? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪਣੈ ਰੋਹਿ ਆਪੇ ਹੀ ਦਝੈ ॥ aapanai rohi aape hee dajhai | By his own anger, he only burns himself. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਮਲਾ ਰਗੜੈ ਲੁਝੈ ॥ manamukh kamalaa ragarrai lujhai | The self-willed manmukh drives himself crazy with worries and stubborn struggles. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੁਝੈ ॥ guramukh hoe tis sabh kichh sujhai | But those who become Gurmukh understand everything. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨ ਸਿਉ ਲੁਝੈ ॥੪੬॥ naanak guramukh man siau lujhai |46| O Nanak, the Gurmukh struggles with his own mind. ||46|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਕੀਤੋ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ jinaa satigur purakh na sevio sabad na keeto veechaar | Those who do not serve the True Guru, the Primal Being, and do not reflect upon the Word of the Shabad - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਇ ਮਾਣਸ ਜੂਨਿ ਨ ਆਖੀਅਨਿ ਪਸੂ ਢੋਰ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥ oe maanas joon na aakheean pasoo dtor gaavaar |
- do not call them human beings; they are just animals and stupid beasts. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਓਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ onaa antar giaan na dhiaan hai har sau preet na piaar | They have no spiritual wisdom or meditation within their beings; they are not in love with the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਏ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ manamukh mue vikaar meh mar jameh vaaro vaar | The self-willed manmukhs die in evil and corruption; they die and are reborn, again and again. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੀਵਦਿਆ ਨੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਦੇ ਹਰਿ ਜਗਜੀਵਨ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ jeevadiaa no milai su jeevade har jagajeevan ur dhaar | They alone live, who join with the living; enshrine the Lord, the Lord of Life, within your heart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਹਣੇ ਤਿਤੁ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੪੭॥ naanak guramukh sohane tith sachai darabaar |47| O Nanak, the Gurmukhs look beautiful in that Court of the True Lord. ||47|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਜਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ har mandar har saajiaa har vasai jis naal | The Lord built the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; the Lord dwells within it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਰਜਾਲਿ ॥ guramatee har paaeaa maaeaa moh parajaal | Following the Guru’s Teachings, I have found the Lord; my emotional attachment to Maya has been burnt away. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਹੈ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥ har mandar vasat anek hai nav nidh naam samaal | Countless things are in the Harimandir, the Temple of the Lord; contemplate the Naam, and the nine treasures will be yours. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧਨੁ ਭਗਵੰਤੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਧਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਲਿ ॥ dhan bhagavantee naanakaa jinaa guramukh ladhaa har bhaal | Blessed is that happy soul-bride, O Nanak, who, as Gurmukh, seeks and finds the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਗੜ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਖੋਜਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪਾਇਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੪੮॥ vaddabhaagee garr mandar khojiaa har hiradai paaeaa naal |48| By great good fortune, one searches the temple of the body-fortress, and finds the Lord within the heart. ||48|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਰਹੇ ਅਤਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥ manamukh deh dis fir rahe at tisanaa lobh vikaar | The self-willed manmukhs wander lost in the ten directions, led by intense desire, greed and corruption. - Guru Amardas Ji
