ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਚਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥ dehu daras man chaau bhagat ihu man tthaharaavai | My mind yearns for the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan. This mind abides in devotional worship. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਲਿਓ ਚਰਾਗੁ ਅੰਧੵਾਰ ਮਹਿ ਸਭ ਕਲਿ ਉਧਰੀ ਇਕ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਮ ॥ balio charaag andhayaar meh sabh kal udharee ik naam dharam | The lamp is lit in the darkness; all are saved in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, through the One Name and faith in the Dharma. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਗਲ ਹਰਿ ਭਵਨ ਮਹਿ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ॥੯॥ pragatt sagal har bhavan meh jan naanak gur paarabraham |9| The Lord is revealed in all the worlds. O servant Nanak, the Guru is the Supreme Lord God. ||9|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕਾਚੀ ਦੇਹ ਮੋਹ ਫੁਨਿ ਬਾਂਧੀ ਸਠ ਕਠੋਰ ਕੁਚੀਲ ਕੁਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ kaachee deh moh fun baandhee satth katthor kucheel kugiaanee | This body is frail and transitory, and bound to emotional attachment. I am foolish, stone-hearted, filthy and unwise. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਾਵਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਰਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵਤ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ dhaavat bhramat rehan nahee paavat paarabraham kee gat nahee jaanee | My mind wanders and wobbles, and will not hold steady. It does not know the state of the Supreme Lord God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਬਨ ਰੂਪ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਿਚਰਤ ਬਿਕਲ ਬਡੌ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥ joban roop maaeaa mad maataa bicharat bikal baddau abhimaanee | I am intoxicated with the wine of youth, beauty and the riches of Maya. I wander around perplexed, in excessive egotistical pride. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਅਪਵਾਦ ਨਾਰਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਯਹ ਮੀਠੀ ਜੀਅ ਮਾਹਿ ਹਿਤਾਨੀ ॥ par dhan par apavaad naar nindaa yeh meetthee jeea maeh hitaanee | The wealth and women of others, arguments and slander, are sweet and dear to my soul. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਲਬੰਚ ਛਪਿ ਕਰਤ ਉਪਾਵਾ ਪੇਖਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ balabanch chhap karat upaavaa pekhat sunat prabh antarajaamee | I try to hide my deception, but God, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of Hearts, sees and hears all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੀਲ ਧਰਮ ਦਯਾ ਸੁਚ ਨਾਸ੍ਤਿ ਆਇਓ ਸਰਨਿ ਜੀਅ ਕੇ ਦਾਨੀ ॥ seel dharam dayaa such naast aaeo saran jeea ke daanee | I have no humility, faith, compassion or purity, but I seek Your Sanctuary, O Giver of life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਣ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਿਰੀਧਰ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ kaaran karan samarath sireedhar raakh lehu naanak ke suaamee |1| The All-powerful Lord is the Cause of causes. O Lord and Master of Nanak, please save me! ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੀਰਤਿ ਕਰਨ ਸਰਨ ਮਨਮੋਹਨ ਜੋਹਨ ਪਾਪ ਬਿਦਾਰਨ ਕਉ ॥ keerat karan saran manamohan johan paap bidaaran kau | The Praises of the Creator, the Enticer of the mind, are potent to destroy sins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰਨ ਤਰਨ ਸਮਰਥ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੁਲਹ ਸਮੂਹ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਸਉ ॥ har taaran taran samarath sabhai bidh kulah samooh udhaaran sau | The All-powerful Lord is the boat, to carry us across; He saves all our generations. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਿ ਅਚੇਤ ਜਾਨਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਭਰਮ ਅੰਧੇਰ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਕਤ ਧਂਉ ॥ chit chet achet jaan satasangat bharam andher mohio kat dhnau | O my unconscious mind, contemplate and remember Him in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. Why are you wandering around, enticed by the darkness of doubt? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੂਰਤ ਘਰੀ ਚਸਾ ਪਲੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਲਉ ॥ moorat gharee chasaa pal simaran raam naam rasanaa sang lau | Remember Him in meditation, for an hour, for a moment, even for an instant. Chant the Name of the Lord with your tongue. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਛਉ ਕਾਜੁ ਅਲਪ ਸੁਖ ਬੰਧਨ ਕੋਟਿ ਜਨੰਮ ਕਹਾ ਦੁਖ ਭਂਉ ॥ hochhau kaaj alap sukh bandhan kott janam kahaa dukh bhnau | You are bound to worthless deeds and shallow pleasures; why do you spend millions of lifetimes wandering in such pain? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਖੵਾ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਆਤਮ ਸਿਉ ਰਂਉ ॥੨॥ sikhayaa sant naam bhaj naanak raam rang aatam siau rnau |2| Chant and vibrate the Name of the Lord, O Nanak, through the Teachings of the Saints. Meditate on the Lord with love in your soul. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੰਚਕ ਰੇਤ ਖੇਤ ਤਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਿਤ ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਸਵਾਰਿ ਧਰੀ ॥ ranchak ret khet tan niramit duralabh deh savaar dharee | The little sperm is planted in the body-field of the mother, and the human body, so difficult to obtain, is formed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਸੋਧੇ ਸੁਖ ਭੁੰਚਤ ਸੰਕਟ ਕਾਟਿ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਹਰੀ ॥ khaan paan sodhe sukh bhunchat sankatt kaatt bipat haree | He eats and drinks, and enjoys pleasures; his pains are taken away, and his suffering is gone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਅਰੁ ਬੰਧਪ ਬੂਝਨ ਕੀ ਸਭ ਸੂਝ ਪਰੀ ॥ maat pitaa bhaaee ar bandhap boojhan kee sabh soojh paree | He is given the understanding to recognize mother, father, siblings and relatives. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਰਧਮਾਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਦਿਨ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ ਨਿਤ ਆਵਤ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਿਖੰਮ ਜਰੀ ॥ baradhamaan hovat din prat nit aavat nikatt bikham jaree | He grows day by day, as the horrible specter of old age comes closer and closer. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੇ ਗੁਨ ਹੀਨ ਦੀਨ ਮਾਇਆ ਕ੍ਰਿਮ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਏਕ ਘਰੀ ॥ re gun heen deen maaeaa krim simar suaamee ek gharee | You worthless, petty worm of Maya - remember your Lord and Master, at least for an instant! - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾਟਿ ਭਰੰਮ ਭਰੀ ॥੩॥ kar geh lehu kripaal kripaa nidh naanak kaatt bharam bharee |3| Please take Nanak’s hand, O Merciful Ocean of Mercy, and take away this heavy load of doubt. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੂਸ ਬਿਲਾ ਮਹਿ ਗਰਬਤ ਕਰਤਬ ਕਰਤ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੁਘਨਾਂ ॥ re man moos bilaa meh garabat karatab karat mahaan mughanaan | O mind, you are a mouse, living in the mousehole of the body; you are so proud of yourself, but you act like an absolute fool. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਪਤ ਦੋਲ ਝੋਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਝੂਲਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਗਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਤ ਘੁਘਨਾ ॥ sanpat dol jhol sang jhoolat maaeaa magan bhramat ghughanaa | You swing in the swing of wealth, intoxicated with Maya, and you wander around like an owl. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸਾਜਨ ਸੁਖ ਬੰਧਪ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਮੋਹੁ ਬਢਿਓ ਸੁ ਘਨਾ ॥ sut banitaa saajan sukh bandhap taa siau mohu badtio su ghanaa | You take pleasure in your children, spouse, friends and relatives; your emotional attachment to them is increasing. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੋਇਓ ਬੀਜੁ ਅਹੰ ਮਮ ਅੰਕੁਰੁ ਬੀਤਤ ਅਉਧ ਕਰਤ ਅਘਨਾਂ ॥ boeo beej ahan mam ankur beetat aaudh karat aghanaan | You have planted the seeds of egotism, and the sprout of possessiveness has come up. You pass your life making sinful mistakes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਰਤੁ ਮੰਜਾਰ ਪਸਾਰਿ ਮੁਖੁ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਭੁੰਚਤ ਭੁਗਤਿ ਭੂਖ ਭੁਖਨਾ ॥ mirat manjaar pasaar mukh nirakhat bhunchat bhugat bhookh bhukhanaa | The cat of death, with his mouth wide-open, is watching you. You eat food, but you are still hungry. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਦਇਆਲ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗੁ ਜਾਨਤ ਸੁਪਨਾ ॥੪॥ simar gupaal deaal satasangat naanak jag jaanat supanaa |4| Meditate in remembrance on the Merciful Lord of the World, O Nanak, in the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. Know that the world is just a dream. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
