ਧਿਗੁ ਤਿਨੑਾ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿਨਾ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ਆਸ ॥੨੧॥ dhig tinaa daa jeeviaa jinaa viddaanee aas |21| Cursed are the lives of those who place their hopes in others. ||21|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜੇ ਮੈ ਹੋਦਾ ਵਾਰਿਆ ਮਿਤਾ ਆਇੜਿਆਂ ॥ fareedaa je mai hodaa vaariaa mitaa aaeirriaan | Fareed, if I had been there when my friend came, I would have made myself a sacrifice to him. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਹੇੜਾ ਜਲੈ ਮਜੀਠ ਜਿਉ ਉਪਰਿ ਅੰਗਾਰਾ ॥੨੨॥ herraa jalai majeetth jiau upar angaaraa |22| Now my flesh is burning red on the hot coals. ||22|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਦਾਖ ਬਿਜਉਰੀਆਂ ਕਿਕਰਿ ਬੀਜੈ ਜਟੁ ॥ fareedaa lorrai daakh bijaureean kikar beejai jatt | Fareed, the farmer plants acacia trees, and wishes for grapes. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਹੰਢੈ ਉਂਨ ਕਤਾਇਦਾ ਪੈਧਾ ਲੋੜੈ ਪਟੁ ॥੨੩॥ handtai un kataaeidaa paidhaa lorrai patt |23| He is spinning wool, but he wishes to wear silk. ||23|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਗਲੀਏ ਚਿਕੜੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨੇਹੁ ॥ fareedaa galee chikarr door ghar naal piaare nehu | Fareed, the path is muddy, and the house of my Beloved is so far away. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਚਲਾ ਤ ਭਿਜੈ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਰਹਾਂ ਤ ਤੁਟੈ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੪॥ chalaa ta bhijai kanbalee rahaan ta tuttai nehu |24| If I go out, my blanket will get soaked, but if I remain at home, then my heart will be broken. ||24|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਭਿਜਉ ਸਿਜਉ ਕੰਬਲੀ ਅਲਹ ਵਰਸਉ ਮੇਹੁ ॥ bhijau sijau kanbalee alah varsau mehu | My blanket is soaked, drenched with the downpour of the Lord’s Rain. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਜਣਾ ਤੁਟਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਹੁ ॥੨੫॥ jaae milaa tinaa sajanaa tuttau naahee nehu |25| I am going out to meet my Friend, so that my heart will not be broken. ||25|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਮੈ ਭੋਲਾਵਾ ਪਗ ਦਾ ਮਤੁ ਮੈਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ॥ fareedaa mai bholaavaa pag daa mat mailee hoe jaae | Fareed, I was worried that my turban might become dirty. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਗਹਿਲਾ ਰੂਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਸਿਰੁ ਭੀ ਮਿਟੀ ਖਾਇ ॥੨੬॥ gahilaa roohu na jaanee sir bhee mittee khaae |26| My thoughtless self did not realize that one day, dust will consume my head as well. ||26|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਸਕਰ ਖੰਡੁ ਨਿਵਾਤ ਗੁੜੁ ਮਾਖਿਓੁ ਮਾਂਝਾ ਦੁਧੁ ॥ fareedaa sakar khandd nivaat gurr maakhio maanjhaa dudh | Fareed: sugar cane, candy, sugar, molasses, honey and buffalo’s milk - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਸਭੇ ਵਸਤੂ ਮਿਠੀਆਂ ਰਬ ਨ ਪੁਜਨਿ ਤੁਧੁ ॥੨੭॥ sabhe vasatoo mittheean rab na pujan tudh |27|

  • all these things are sweet, but they are not equal to You. ||27|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰੋਟੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਾਠ ਕੀ ਲਾਵਣੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਭੁਖ ॥ fareedaa rottee meree kaatth kee laavan meree bhukh | Fareed, my bread is made of wood, and hunger is my appetizer. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਜਿਨਾ ਖਾਧੀ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਘਣੇ ਸਹਨਿਗੇ ਦੁਖ ॥੨੮॥ jinaa khaadhee choparree ghane sahanige dukh |28| Those who eat buttered bread, will suffer in terrible pain. ||28|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਰੁਖੀ ਸੁਖੀ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ਠੰਢਾ ਪਾਣੀ ਪੀਉ ॥ rukhee sukhee khaae kai tthandtaa paanee peeo | Eat dry bread, and drink cold water. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦੇਖਿ ਪਰਾਈ ਚੋਪੜੀ ਨਾ ਤਰਸਾਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੨੯॥ fareedaa dekh paraaee choparree naa tarasaae jeeo |29| Fareed, if you see someone else’s buttered bread, do not envy him for it. ||29|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਅਜੁ ਨ ਸੁਤੀ ਕੰਤ ਸਿਉ ਅੰਗੁ ਮੁੜੇ ਮੁੜਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ aj na sutee kant siau ang murre murr jaae | This night, I did not sleep with my Husband Lord, and now my body is suffering in pain. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਜਾਇ ਪੁਛਹੁ ਡੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਤੁਮ ਕਿਉ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੩੦॥ jaae puchhahu ddohaaganee tum kiau rain vihaae |30| Go and ask the deserted bride, how she passes her night. ||30|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥ saahurai dtoee naa lahai peeeai naahee thaau | She finds no place of rest in her father-in-law’s home, and no place in her parents’ home either. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਪਿਰੁ ਵਾਤੜੀ ਨ ਪੁਛਈ ਧਨ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੩੧॥ pir vaatarree na puchhee dhan sohaagan naau |31| Her Husband Lord does not care for her; what sort of a blessed, happy soul-bride is she? ||31|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਸਾਹੁਰੈ ਪੇਈਐ ਕੰਤ ਕੀ ਕੰਤੁ ਅਗੰਮੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ॥ saahurai peeeai kant kee kant agam athaahu | In her father-in-law’s home hereafter, and in her parents’ home in this world, she belongs to her Husband Lord. Her Husband is Inaccessible and Unfathomable. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਬੇਪਰਵਾਹ ॥੩੨॥ naanak so sohaaganee ju bhaavai beparavaah |32| O Nanak, she is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to her Carefree Lord. ||32|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਨਾਤੀ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੰਬਹੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਆਇ ਨਚਿੰਦੁ ॥ naatee dhotee sanbahee sutee aae nachind | Bathing, washing and decorating herself, she comes and sleeps without anxiety. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੁ ਬੇੜੀ ਹਿੰਙੁ ਦੀ ਗਈ ਕਥੂਰੀ ਗੰਧੁ ॥੩੩॥ fareedaa rahee su berree hing dee gee kathooree gandh |33| Fareed, she still smells like asafoetida; the fragrance of musk is gone. ||33|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਜੋਬਨ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਨਾ ਡਰਾਂ ਜੇ ਸਹ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ joban jaande naa ddaraan je seh preet na jaae | I am not afraid of losing my youth, as long as I do not lose the Love of my Husband Lord. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਕਿਤਂੀ ਜੋਬਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੁਕਿ ਗਏ ਕੁਮਲਾਇ ॥੩੪॥ fareedaa kitanee joban preet bin suk ge kumalaae |34| Fareed, so many youths, without His Love, have dried up and withered away. ||34|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਿੰਤ ਖਟੋਲਾ ਵਾਣੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਬਿਰਹਿ ਵਿਛਾਵਣ ਲੇਫੁ ॥ fareedaa chint khattolaa vaan dukh bireh vichhaavan lef | Fareed, anxiety is my bed, pain is my mattress, and the pain of separation is my blanket and quilt. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਏਹੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਜੀਵਣਾ ਤੂ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਚੇ ਵੇਖੁ ॥੩੫॥ ehu hamaaraa jeevanaa too saahib sache vekh |35| Behold, this is my life, O my True Lord and Master. ||35|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਬਿਰਹਾ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤੂ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥ birahaa birahaa aakheeai birahaa too sulataan | Many talk of the pain and suffering of separation; O pain, you are the ruler of all. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਬਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਸੋ ਤਨੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਮਸਾਨੁ ॥੩੬॥ fareedaa jit tan birahu na aoopajai so tan jaan masaan |36| Fareed, that body, within which love of the Lord does not well up - look upon that body as a cremation ground. ||36|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਏ ਵਿਸੁ ਗੰਦਲਾ ਧਰੀਆਂ ਖੰਡੁ ਲਿਵਾੜਿ ॥ fareedaa e vis gandalaa dhareean khandd livaarr | Fareed, these are poisonous sprouts coated with sugar. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਇਕਿ ਰਾਹੇਦੇ ਰਹਿ ਗਏ ਇਕਿ ਰਾਧੀ ਗਏ ਉਜਾੜਿ ॥੩੭॥ eik raahede reh ge ik raadhee ge ujaarr |37| Some die planting them, and some are ruined, harvesting and enjoying them. ||37|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਹੰਢਿ ਕੈ ਚਾਰਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਸੰਮਿ ॥ fareedaa chaar gavaaeaa handt kai chaar gavaaeaa sam | Fareed, the hours of the day are lost wandering around, and the hours of the night are lost in sleep. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਲੇਖਾ ਰਬੁ ਮੰਗੇਸੀਆ ਤੂ ਆਂਹੋ ਕੇਰ੍ਹੇ ਕੰਮਿ ॥੩੮॥ lekhaa rab mangeseea too aanho kerhe kam |38| God will call for your account, and ask you why you came into this world. ||38|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਫਰੀਦਾ ਦਰਿ ਦਰਵਾਜੈ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਕਿਉ ਡਿਠੋ ਘੜੀਆਲੁ ॥ fareedaa dar daravaajai jaae kai kiau ddittho gharreeaal | Fareed, you have gone to the Lord’s Door. Have you seen the gong there? - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਏਹੁ ਨਿਦੋਸਾਂ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਹਮ ਦੋਸਾਂ ਦਾ ਕਿਆ ਹਾਲੁ ॥੩੯॥ ehu nidosaan maareeai ham dosaan daa kiaa haal |39| This blameless object is being beaten - imagine what is in store for us sinners! ||39|| - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਘੜੀਏ ਘੜੀਏ ਮਾਰੀਐ ਪਹਰੀ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥ gharree gharree maareeai paharee lahai sajaae | Each and every hour, it is beaten; it is punished every day. - Sheikh Farid Ji

ਸੋ ਹੇੜਾ ਘੜੀਆਲ ਜਿਉ ਡੁਖੀ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਇ ॥੪੦॥ so herraa gharreeaal jiau ddukhee rain vihaae |40| This beautiful body is like the gong; it passes the night in pain. ||40|| - Sheikh Farid Ji
