ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰਤਿ ਜਮਦੂਤਨਹ ॥੩੪॥ keeratanan saadhasangen naanak neh drisattant jamadootanah |34| and sings the Kirtan of His Praises in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, shall never see the Messenger of Death. ||34|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਧਨੰ ਰੂਪੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਰਾਜਨਹ ॥ nach duralabhan dhanan roopan nach duralabhan svarag raajanah | Wealth and beauty are not so difficult to obtain. Paradise and royal power are not so difficult to obtain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਭੋਜਨੰ ਬਿੰਜਨੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸ੍ਵਛ ਅੰਬਰਹ ॥ nach duralabhan bhojanan binjanan nach duralabhan svachh anbarah | Foods and delicacies are not so difficult to obtain. Elegant clothes are not so difficuilt to obtain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਸੁਤ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸਹ ॥ nach duralabhan sut mitr bhraat baandhav nach duralabhan banitaa bilaasah | Children, friends, siblings and relatives are not so difficult to obtain. The pleasures of woman are not so difficult to obtain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਣੰ ਨਚ ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਚਤੁਰ ਚੰਚਲਹ ॥ nach duralabhan bidiaa prabeenan nach duralabhan chatur chanchalah | Knowledge and wisdom are not so difficult to obtain. Cleverness and trickery are not so difficult to obtain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਰਲਭੰ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਨਾਮਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵਿੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੰ ॥੩੫॥ duralabhan ek bhagavaan naamah naanak labadhayin saadhasang kripaa prabhan |35| Only the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is difficult to obtain. O Nanak, it is only obtained by God’s Grace, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||35|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਤ ਕਤਹ ਤਤਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰ ਸ੍ਵਰਗ ਮਰਤ ਪਯਾਲ ਲੋਕਹ ॥ jat katah tatah drisattan svarag marat payaal lokah | Wherever I look, I see the Lord, whether in this world, in paradise, or the nether regions of the underworld. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਰਮਣੰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪੵਤੇ ॥੩੬॥ sarabatr ramanan gobindah naanak lep chhep na lipayate |36| The Lord of the Universe is All-pervading everywhere. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||36|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਖਯਾ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੰ ਦ੍ਰੁਸਟਾਂ ਸਖਾ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥ bikhayaa bhayant amritan drusattaan sakhaa svajanah | Poison is transformed into nectar, and enemies into friends and companions. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਖੰ ਭਯੰਤਿ ਸੁਖੵੰ ਭੈ ਭੀਤੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਯਹ ॥ dukhan bhayant sukhayan bhai bheetan ta nirabhayah | Pain is changed into pleasure, and the fearful become fearless. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਥਾਨ ਬਿਹੂਨ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਹ ॥੩੭॥ thaan bihoon bisraam naaman naanak kripaal har har gurah |37| Those who have no home or place find their place of rest in the Naam, O Nanak, when the Guru, the Lord, becomes Merciful. ||37|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਸੀਲ ਮਮੰ ਸੀਲੰ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਵਨ ਮਮ ਪਾਵਨਹ ॥ sarab seel maman seelan sarab paavan mam paavanah | He blesses all with humility; He has blessed me with humility as well. He purifies all, and He has purified me as well. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਕਰਤਬ ਮਮੰ ਕਰਤਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਪ ਛੇਪ ਨ ਲਿਪੵਤੇ ॥੩੮॥ sarab karatab maman karataa naanak lep chhep na lipayate |38| The Creator of all is the Creator of me as well. O Nanak, no blame or stain sticks to Him. ||38|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੇਵਹ ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਬਾਵਨ ਚੰਦਨਹ ॥ neh seetalan chandr devah neh seetalan baavan chandanah | The moon-god is not cool and calm, nor is the white sandalwood tree. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸੀਤ ਰੁਤੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੀਤਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੩੯॥ neh seetalan seet ruten naanak seetalan saadh svajanah |39| The winter season is not cool; O Nanak, only the Holy friends, the Saints, are cool and calm. ||39|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੰ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੰ ਧੵਾਨੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥ mantran raam raam naaman dhayaanan sarabatr pooranah | Through the Mantra of the Name of the Lord, Raam, Raam, one meditates on the All-pervading Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੵਾਨੰ ਸਮ ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖੰ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਰਵੈਰਣਹ ॥ gayaanan sam dukh sukhan jugat niramal niravairanah | Those who have the wisdom to look alike upon pleasure and pain, live the immaculate lifestyle, free of vengeance. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਯਾਲੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਜੀਆ ਪੰਚ ਦੋਖ ਬਿਵਰਜਿਤਹ ॥ dayaalan sarabatr jeea panch dokh bivarajitah | They are kind to all beings; they have overpowered the five thieves. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭੋਜਨੰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਅਲਪ ਮਾਯਾ ਜਲ ਕਮਲ ਰਹਤਹ ॥ bhojanan gopaal keeratanan alap maayaa jal kamal rahatah | They take the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praise as their food; they remain untouched by Maya, like the lotus in the water. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਉਪਦੇਸੰ ਸਮ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਵਨੀ ॥ aupadesan sam mitr satrah bhagavant bhagat bhaavanee | They share the Teachings with friend and enemy alike; they love the devotional worship of God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਹ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣੰ ਆਪੁ ਤੵਿਾਗਿ ਸਗਲ ਰੇਣੁਕਹ ॥ par nindaa neh srot sravanan aap tayiaag sagal renukah | They do not listen to slander; renouncing self-conceit, they become the dust of all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਟ ਲਖੵਣ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੪੦॥ khatt lakhayan pooranan purakhah naanak naam saadh svajanah |40| Whoever has these six qualities, O Nanak, is called a Holy friend. ||40|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਜਾ ਭੋਗੰਤ ਕੰਦ ਮੂਲੰ ਬਸੰਤੇ ਸਮੀਪਿ ਕੇਹਰਹ ॥ ajaa bhogant kand moolan basante sameep keharah | The goat enjoys eating fruits and roots, but if it lives near a tiger, it is always anxious. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਤ੍ਰ ਗਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਬਿਆਪਤੇ ॥੪੧॥ tatr gate sansaarah naanak sog harakhan biaapate |41| This is the condition of the world, O Nanak; it is afflicted by pleasure and pain. ||41|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਛਲੰ ਛਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਕੋਟਿ ਬਿਘਨੰ ਅਪਰਾਧੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਮਲੰ ॥ chhalan chhidran kott bighanan aparaadhan kilabikh malan | Fraud, false accusations, millions of diseases, sins and the filthy residues of evil mistakes; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ਮਾਨ ਅਪਮਾਨੰ ਮਦੰ ਮਾਯਾ ਬਿਆਪਿਤੰ ॥ bharam mohan maan apamaanan madan maayaa biaapitan | doubt, emotional attachment, pride, dishonor and intoxication with Maya - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮ੍ਰਿਤੵੁ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮੰਤਿ ਨਰਕਹ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵੰ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ॥ mritayu janam bhramant narakah anik upaavan na sidhayate | these lead mortals to death and rebirth, wandering lost in hell. In spite of all sorts of efforts, salvation is not found. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਮਲੰ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਹ ਜਪੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਨਾਮੰ ॥ niramalan saadh sangah japant naanak gopaal naaman | Chanting and meditating on the Name of the Lord in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, mortals become immaculate and pure. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਮੰਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਿਤ ਪ੍ਰਤਹ ॥੪੨॥ ramant gun gobind nit pratah |42| They continually dwell upon the Glorious Praises of God. ||42|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਰਣ ਸਰਣ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਮਣ ਸੀਲ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰਹ ॥ taran saran suaamee raman seel paramesurah | In the Sanctuary of the Kind-hearted Lord, our Transcendent Lord and Master, we are carried across. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥਹ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥ karan kaaran samarathah daan det prabh pooranah | God is the Perfect, All-powerful Cause of causes; He is the Giver of gifts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਾਸ ਆਸ ਕਰਣੰ ਸਗਲ ਅਰਥ ਆਲਯਹ ॥ niraas aas karanan sagal arath aalayah | He gives hope to the hopeless. He is the Source of all riches. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਗਲ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਜਾਚਿਕਹ ॥੪੩॥ gun nidhaan simarant naanak sagal jaachant jaachikah |43| Nanak meditates in remembrance on the Treasure of Virtue; we are all beggars, begging at His Door. ||43|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਰਗਮ ਸਥਾਨ ਸੁਗਮੰ ਮਹਾ ਦੂਖ ਸਰਬ ਸੂਖਣਹ ॥ duragam sathaan sugaman mahaa dookh sarab sookhanah | The most difficult place becomes easy, and the worst pain turns into pleasure. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਰਬਚਨ ਭੇਦ ਭਰਮੰ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਿਸਨੰ ਤ ਸੁਰਜਨਹ ॥ durabachan bhed bharaman saakat pisanan ta surajanah | Evil words, differences and doubts are obliterated, and even faithless cynics and malicious gossips become good people. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਸਥਿਤੰ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖੰ ਭੈ ਖੀਣੰ ਤ ਨਿਰਭਵਹ ॥ asathitan sog harakhan bhai kheenan ta nirabhavah | They become steady and stable, whether happy or sad; their fears are taken away, and they are fearless. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
