ਰਾਜੰ ਤ ਮਾਨੰ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੰ ਤ ਹੀਨੰ ॥ raajan ta maanan abhimaanan ta heenan | If there is power, then there is pride. If there is egotistical pride, then there will be a fall. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਰਗੰ ਵਰਤੰਤਿ ਬਿਨਾਸਨੰ ॥ pravirat maaragan varatant binaasanan | Engrossed in worldly ways, one is ruined. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਭਜਨ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗੇਣ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਭਜਨਾਸਨੰ ॥੧੨॥ gobind bhajan saadh sangen asathiran naanak bhagavant bhajanaasanan |12| Meditating and vibrating on the Lord of the Universe in the Company of the Holy, you shall become steady and stable. Nanak vibrates and meditates on the Lord God. ||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਿਰਪੰਤ ਹਰੀਅੰ ਮਤਿ ਤਤੁ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ kirapant hareean mat tat giaanan | By the Grace of God, genuine understanding comes to the mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਗਸੀਧੵਿ ਬੁਧਾ ਕੁਸਲ ਥਾਨੰ ॥ bigaseedhay budhaa kusal thaanan | The intellect blossoms forth, and one finds a place in the realm of celestial bliss. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਸੵਿੰਤ ਰਿਖਿਅੰ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਮਾਨੰ ॥ basayint rikhian tiaag maanan | The senses are brought under control, and pride is abandoned. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੀਤਲੰਤ ਰਿਦਯੰ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਸੰਤ ਗਿਆਨੰ ॥ seetalant ridayan drirr sant giaanan | The heart is cooled and soothed, and the wisdom of the Saints is implanted within. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਹੰਤ ਜਨਮੰ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਲੀਣਾ ॥ rahant janaman har daras leenaa | Reincarnation is ended, and the Blessed Vision of the Lord’s Darshan is obtained. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਾਜੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦ ਬੀਣਾਂ ॥੧੩॥ baajant naanak sabad beenaan |13| O Nanak, the musical instrument of the Word of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within. ||13|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੰਤ ਬੇਦਾ ਗੁਣੰਤ ਗੁਨੀਆ ਸੁਣੰਤ ਬਾਲਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ kahant bedaa gunant guneea sunant baalaa bahu bidh prakaaraa | The Vedas preach and recount God’s Glories; people hear them by various ways and means. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਸੁਬਿਦਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ drirrant subidiaa har har kripaalaa | The Merciful Lord, Har, Har, implants spiritual wisdom within. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਦਾਨੁ ਜਾਚੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੈਨਹਾਰ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥੧੪॥ naam daan jaachant naanak dainahaar gur gopaalaa |14| Nanak begs for the Gift of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The Guru is the Great Giver, the Lord of the World. ||14|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਹ ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਛੁ ਲੋਕ ਕਹ ॥ neh chintaa maat pit bhraatah neh chintaa kachh lok kah | Do not worry so much about your mother, father and siblings. Do not worry so much about other people. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤਹ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਰਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਨਬੰਧਨਹ ॥ neh chintaa banitaa sut meetah pravirat maaeaa sanabandhanah | Do not worry about your spouse, children and friends. You are obsessed with your involvements in Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਇਆਲ ਏਕ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕਹ ॥੧੫॥ deaal ek bhagavaan purakhah naanak sarab jeea pratipaalakah |15| The One Lord God is Kind and Compassionate, O Nanak. He is the Cherisher and Nurturer of all living beings. ||15|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਤੵ ਵਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤੵ ਚਿਤੰ ਅਨਿਤੵ ਆਸਾ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰੰ ॥ anitay vitan anitay chitan anitay aasaa bahu bidh prakaaran | Wealth is temporary; conscious existence is temporary; hopes of all sorts are temporary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਤੵ ਹੇਤੰ ਅਹੰ ਬੰਧੰ ਭਰਮ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਲਨੰ ਬਿਕਾਰੰ ॥ anitay hetan ahan bandhan bharam maaeaa malanan bikaaran | The bonds of love, attachment, egotism, doubt, Maya and the pollution of corruption are temporary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਫਿਰੰਤ ਜੋਨਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਜਠਰਾਗਨਿ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਲੀਣ ਬੁਧੵੰ ॥ firant jon anek jattharaagan neh simarant maleen budhayan | The mortal passes through the fire of the womb of reincarnation countless times. He does not remember the Lord in meditation; his understanding is polluted. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਰਤ ਮਇਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਤਿਤ ਉਧਾਰਣ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਗਮਹ ॥੧੬॥ he gobind karat meaa naanak patit udhaaran saadh sangamah |16| O Lord of the Universe, when You grant Your Grace, even sinners are saved. Nanak dwells in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||16|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਿਰੰਤ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਤਾਲੰ ਜਲੰਤ ਦੇਦੀਪੵ ਬੈਸ੍ਵਾਂਤਰਹ ॥ girant gir patit paataalan jalant dedeepay baisvaantarah | You may drop down from the mountains, and fall into the nether regions of the underworld, or be burnt in the blazing fire, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਹੰਤਿ ਅਗਾਹ ਤੋਯੰ ਤਰੰਗੰ ਦੁਖੰਤ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣਹ ॥ bahant agaah toyan tarangan dukhant grah chintaa janaman ta maranah | or swept away by the unfathomable waves of water; but the worst pain of all is household anxiety, which is the source of the cycle of death and rebirth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਧਨੰ ਨ ਸਿਧੵਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਅਸਥੰਭੰ ਸਬਦ ਸਾਧ ਸ੍ਵਜਨਹ ॥੧੭॥ anik saadhanan na sidhayate naanak asathanbhan asathanbhan asathanbhan sabad saadh svajanah |17| No matter what you do, you cannot break its bonds, O Nanak. Man’s only Support, Anchor and Mainstay is the Word of the Shabad, and the Holy, Friendly Saints. ||17|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘੋਰ ਦੁਖੵੰ ਅਨਿਕ ਹਤੵੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰੰ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੵਾਦੰ ॥ ghor dukhayan anik hatayan janam daaridran mahaa bikhayaadan | Excruciating pain, countless killings, reincarnation, poverty and terrible misery - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਟੰਤ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਵਕ ਕਾਸਟ ਭਸਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੮॥ mittant sagal simarant har naam naanak jaise paavak kaasatt bhasaman karot |18| are all destroyed by meditating in remembrance on the Lord’s Name, O Nanak, just as fire reduces piles of wood to ashes. ||18|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਧਕਾਰ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰ ਗੁਣ ਰਮੰਤ ਅਘ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ andhakaar simarat prakaasan gun ramant agh khanddanah | Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the darkness is illuminated. Dwelling on His Glorious Praises, the ugly sins are destroyed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਿਦ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਭੈ ਭੀਤ ਦੂਤਹ ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਮਹਾ ਨਿਰਮਲਹ ॥ rid basant bhai bheet dootah karam karat mahaa niramalah | Enshrining the Lord deep within the heart, and with the immaculate karma of doing good deeds, one strikes fear into the demons. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਰਹੰਤ ਸ੍ਰੋਤਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਮੂਹ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨਹ ॥ janam maran rahant srotaa sukh samooh amogh darasanah | The cycle of coming and going in reincarnation is ended, absolute peace is obtained, and the Fruitful Vision of the Lord’s Darshan. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਣਿ ਜੋਗੰ ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਖੇਮੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥੧੯॥ saran jogan sant pria naanak so bhagavaan kheman karot |19| He is Potent to give Protection, He is the Lover of His Saints. O Nanak, the Lord God blesses all with bliss. ||19|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਛੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ਅਗ੍ਰਣੀਵਹ ਨਿਰਾਸੰ ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨਹ ॥ paachhan karot agraneevah niraasan aas pooranah | Those who were left behind - the Lord brings them to the front. He fulfills the hopes of the hopeless. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਧਨ ਭਯੰ ਧਨਵੰਤਹ ਰੋਗੀਅੰ ਰੋਗ ਖੰਡਨਹ ॥ niradhan bhayan dhanavantah rogeean rog khanddanah | He makes the poor rich, and cures the illnesses of the ill. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤੵੰ ਭਗਤਿ ਦਾਨੰ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਰਤਨਹ ॥ bhagatayan bhagat daanan raam naam gun keeratanah | He blesses His devotees with devotion. They sing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord’s Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਾਤਾਰਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿੰ ਨ ਲਭੵਤੇ ॥੨੦॥ paarabraham purakh daataarah naanak gur sevaa kin na labhayate |20| O Nanak, those who serve the Guru find the Supreme Lord God, the Great Giver||20|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਧਰੰ ਧਰੰ ਧਾਰਣਹ ਨਿਰਧਨੰ ਧਨ ਨਾਮ ਨਰਹਰਹ ॥ adharan dharan dhaaranah niradhanan dhan naam naraharah | He gives Support to the unsupported. The Name of the Lord is the Wealth of the poor. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥ ਗੋਬਿੰਦਹ ਬਲਹੀਣ ਬਲ ਕੇਸਵਹ ॥ anaath naath gobindah balaheen bal kesavah | The Lord of the Universe is the Master of the masterless; the Beautiful-haired Lord is the Power of the weak. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਭੂਤ ਦਯਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ਦੀਨ ਬਾਂਧਵ ਦਾਮੋਦਰਹ ॥ sarab bhoot dayaal achut deen baandhav daamodarah | The Lord is Merciful to all beings, Eternal and Unchanging, the Family of the meek and humble. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਬਗੵ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਭਗਵਾਨਹ ਭਗਤਿ ਵਛਲ ਕਰੁਣਾ ਮਯਹ ॥ sarabagay pooran purakh bhagavaanah bhagat vachhal karunaa mayah | The All-knowing, Perfect, Primal Lord God is the Lover of His devotees, the Embodiment of Mercy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
