ਧ੍ਰਿਗੰਤ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਨੇਹੰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਾਂਧਵਹ ॥ dhrigant maat pitaa sanehan dhrig sanehan bhraat baandhavah | Cursed is loving attachment to one’s mother and father; cursed is loving attachment to one’s siblings and relatives. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਲਾਸ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ dhrig sanehan banitaa bilaas sutah | Cursed is attachment to the joys of family life with one’s spouse and children. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧ੍ਰਿਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹੰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਾਰਥ ਕਹ ॥ dhrig sanehan grihaarath kah | Cursed is attachment to household affairs. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗ ਸ੍ਨੇਹ ਸਤੵਿੰ ਸੁਖਯੰ ਬਸੰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕਹ ॥੨॥ saadhasang saneeh satayin sukhayan basant naanakah |2| Only loving attachment to the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, is True. Nanak dwells there in peace. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਥੵੰਤ ਦੇਹੰ ਖੀਣੰਤ ਬਲਨੰ ॥ mithayant dehan kheenant balanan | The body is false; its power is temporary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਰਧੰਤਿ ਜਰੂਆ ਹਿਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ baradhant jarooaa hitayant maaeaa | It grows old; its love for Maya increases greatly. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਤੵੰਤ ਆਸਾ ਆਥਿਤੵ ਭਵਨੰ ॥ atayant aasaa aathitay bhavanan | The human is only a temporary guest in the home of the body, but he has high hopes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਨੰਤ ਸ੍ਵਾਸਾ ਭੈਯਾਨ ਧਰਮੰ ॥ ganant svaasaa bhaiyaan dharaman | The Righteous Judge of Dharma is relentless; he counts each and every breath. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਤੰਤਿ ਮੋਹ ਕੂਪ ਦੁਰਲਭੵ ਦੇਹੰ ਤਤ ਆਸ੍ਰਯੰ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ patant moh koop duralabhay dehan tat aasrayan naanak | The human body, so difficult to obtain, has fallen into the deep dark pit of emotional attachment. O Nanak, its only support is God, the Essence of Reality. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ॥੩॥ gobind gobind gobind gopaal kripaa |3| O God, Lord of the World, Lord of the Universe, Master of the Universe, please be kind to me. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਚ ਕੋਟੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਤੋਯੰ ਲੇਪਨੰ ਰਕਤ ਚਰਮਣਹ ॥ kaach kottan rachant toyan lepanan rakat charamanah | This fragile body-fortress is made up of water, plastered with blood and wrapped in skin. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਵੰਤ ਦੁਆਰੰ ਭੀਤ ਰਹਿਤੰ ਬਾਇ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਸਥੰਭਨਹ ॥ navant duaaran bheet rahitan baae roopan asathanbhanah | It has nine gates, but no doors; it is supported by pillars of wind, the channels of the breath. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮੰ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤਿ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਜਾਨੰਤਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ॥ gobind naaman neh simarant agiaanee jaanant asathiran | The ignorant person does not meditate in remembrance on the Lord of the Universe; he thinks that this body is permanent. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਰਲਭ ਦੇਹ ਉਧਰੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ॥ duralabh deh udharant saadh saran naanak | This precious body is saved and redeemed in the Sanctuary of the Holy, O Nanak, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਜਪੰਤਿ ॥੪॥ har har har har har hare japant |4| chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਭੰਤ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਗੁਣਗੵੰ ਪੂਰਨੰ ਬਹੁਲੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ॥ subhant tuyan achut gunagayan pooranan bahulo kripaalaa | O Glorious, Eternal and Imperishable, Perfect and Abundantly Compassionate, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੰਭੀਰੰ ਊਚੈ ਸਰਬਗਿ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ganbheeran aoochai sarabag apaaraa | Profound and Unfathomable, Lofty and Exalted, All-knowing and Infinite Lord God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭ੍ਰਿਤਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ਚਰਣੰ ॥ bhritiaa prian bisraam charanan | O Lover of Your devoted servants, Your Feet are a Sanctuary of Peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਾਥ ਨਾਥੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੫॥ anaath naathe naanak saranan |5| O Master of the masterless, Helper of the helpless, Nanak seeks Your Sanctuary. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮ੍ਰਿਗੀ ਪੇਖੰਤ ਬਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰੇਣ ਲਖੵ ਆਵਧਹ ॥ mrigee pekhant badhik prahaaren lakhay aavadhah | Seeing the deer, the hunter aims his weapons. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਹੋ ਜਸੵ ਰਖੇਣ ਗੋਪਾਲਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਮ ਨ ਛੇਦੵਤੇ ॥੬॥ aho jasay rakhen gopaalah naanak rom na chhedayate |6| But if one is protected by the Lord of the World, O Nanak, not a hair on his head will be touched. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਹੁ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਕਾਰੀ ਸੇਵੰਤ ਸੂਰਾ ਚਤੁਰ ਦਿਸਹ ॥ bahu jatan karataa balavant kaaree sevant sooraa chatur disah | He may be surrounded on all four sides by servants and powerful warriors; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਖਮ ਥਾਨ ਬਸੰਤ ਊਚਹ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰੰਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਕਦਾਂਚਹ ॥ bikham thaan basant aoochah neh simarant maranan kadaanchah | he may dwell in a lofty place, difficult to approach, and never even think of death. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਵੰਤਿ ਆਗਿਆ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਪੁਰਖਹ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਟੀ ਸਾਸ ਅਕਰਖਤੇ ॥੭॥ hovant aagiaa bhagavaan purakhah naanak keettee saas akarakhate |7| But when the Order comes from the Primal Lord God, O Nanak, even an ant can take away his breath of life. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਬਦੰ ਰਤੰ ਹਿਤੰ ਮਇਆ ਕੀਰਤੰ ਕਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਕ੍ਰਿਤੁਆ ॥ sabadan ratan hitan meaa keeratan kalee karam krituaa | To be imbued and attuned to the Word of the Shabad; to be kind and compassionate; to sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises - these are the most worthwhile actions in this Dark Age of Kali Yuga. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਟੰਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਰਾਗਤ ਭਰਮ ਮੋਹੰ ॥ mittant tatraagat bharam mohan | In this way, one’s inner doubts and emotional attachments are dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਵਾਨ ਰਮਣੰ ਸਰਬਤ੍ਰ ਥਾਨੵਿੰ ॥ bhagavaan ramanan sarabatr thaanayin | God is pervading and permeating all places. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਤੁਯੰ ਅਮੋਘ ਦਰਸਨੰ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਾਧ ਰਸਨਾ ॥ drisatt tuyan amogh darasanan basant saadh rasanaa | So obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; He dwells upon the tongues of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਿਅੰ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੮॥ har har har hare naanak prian jaap japanaa |8| O Nanak, meditate and chant the Name of the Beloved Lord, Har, Har, Har, Haray. ||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟੰਤ ਰੂਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਦੀਪੰ ਘਟੰਤ ਰਵਿ ਸਸੀਅਰ ਨਖੵਤ੍ਰ ਗਗਨੰ ॥ ghattant roopan ghattant deepan ghattant rav saseear nakhayatr gaganan | Beauty fades away, islands fade away, the sun, moon, stars and sky fade away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟੰਤ ਬਸੁਧਾ ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਸਿਖੰਡੰ ॥ ghattant basudhaa gir tar sikhanddan | The earth, mountains, forests and lands fade away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟੰਤ ਲਲਨਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਹੀਤੰ ॥ ghattant lalanaa sut bhraat heetan | One’s spouse, children, siblings and loved friends fade away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟੰਤ ਕਨਿਕ ਮਾਨਿਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਸ੍ਵਰੂਪੰ ॥ ghattant kanik maanik maaeaa svaroopan | Gold and jewels and the incomparable beauty of Maya fade away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਘਟੰਤ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਅਚੁਤ ॥ neh ghattant keval gopaal achut | Only the Eternal, Unchanging Lord does not fade away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਸਥਿਰੰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ॥੯॥ asathiran naanak saadh jan |9| O Nanak, only the humble Saints are steady and stable forever. ||9|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਧਰਮੰ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਪਾਪੰ ॥ neh bilanb dharaman bilanb paapan | Do not delay in practicing righteousness; delay in committing sins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦ੍ਰਿੜੰਤ ਨਾਮੰ ਤਜੰਤ ਲੋਭੰ ॥ drirrant naaman tajant lobhan | Implant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within yourself, and abandon greed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤੰ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਨਾਸੰ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤੰ ਧਰਮ ਲਖੵਿਣ ॥ saran santan kilabikh naasan praapatan dharam lakhayin | In the Sanctuary of the Saints, the sins are erased. The character of righteousness is received by that person, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਹ ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਮਾਧਵਹ ॥੧੦॥ naanak jih suprasan maadhavah |10| O Nanak, with whom the Lord is pleased and satisfied. ||10|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਰਤ ਮੋਹੰ ਅਲਪ ਬੁਧੵੰ ਰਚੰਤਿ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸਾਹੰ ॥ mirat mohan alap budhayan rachant banitaa binod saahan | The person of shallow understanding is dying in emotional attachment; he is engrossed in pursuits of pleasure with his wife. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੌਬਨ ਬਹਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਕਨਿਕ ਕੁੰਡਲਹ ॥ jauaban bahikram kanik kunddalah | With youthful beauty and golden earrings, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਮੰਦਿਰ ਸੋਭੰਤਿ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ਇਤੵੰਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਬੵਾਪਿਤੰ ॥ bachitr mandir sobhant basatraa itayant maaeaa bayaapitan | wondrous mansions, decorations and clothes - this is how Maya clings to him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੇ ਅਚੁਤ ਸਰਣਿ ਸੰਤ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋ ਭਗਵਾਨਏ ਨਮਹ ॥੧੧॥ he achut saran sant naanak bho bhagavaane namah |11| O Eternal, Unchanging, Benevolent Lord God, O Sanctuary of the Saints, Nanak humbly bows to You. ||11|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮੰ ਤ ਮਰਣੰ ਹਰਖੰ ਤ ਸੋਗੰ ਭੋਗੰ ਤ ਰੋਗੰ ॥ janaman ta maranan harakhan ta sogan bhogan ta rogan | If there is birth, then there is death. If there is pleasure, then there is pain. If there is enjoyment, then there is disease. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਊਚੰ ਤ ਨੀਚੰ ਨਾਨੑਾ ਸੁ ਮੂਚੰ ॥ aoochan ta neechan naanaa su moochan | If there is high, then there is low. If there is small, then there is great. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
