ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਜੋ ਮਾਨਿਓ ਦੇਹ ਸੋ ਤਉ ਤੇਰਉ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਖੇਹ ॥ asathir jo maanio deh so tau terau hoe hai kheh | You believed that this body was permanent, but it shall turn to dust. - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਕਿਉ ਨ ਹਰਿ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਨਿਲਾਜ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ kiau na har ko naam lehi moorakh nilaaj re |1| Why don’t you chant the Name of the Lord, you shameless fool? ||1|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਹੀਏ ਆਨਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ raam bhagat hee aan chhaadd de tai man ko maan | Let devotional worship of the Lord enter into your heart, and abandon the intellectualism of your mind. - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨ ਇਹ ਬਖਾਨਿ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਬਿਰਾਜੁ ਰੇ ॥੨॥੪॥ naanak jan ih bakhaan jag meh biraaj re |2|4| O Servant Nanak, this is the way to live in the world. ||2||4|| - Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji

ਪੜਿੑ ਪੁਸ੍ਤਕ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਬਾਦੰ ॥ parra pustak sandhiaa baadan | You study the scriptures, say your prayers and argue; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਲ ਪੂਜਸਿ ਬਗੁਲ ਸਮਾਧੰ ॥ sil poojas bagul samaadhan | you worship stones and sit like a crane, pretending to meditate. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਭੂਖਨ ਸਾਰੰ ॥ mukh jhootth bibhookhan saaran | You speak lies and well-ornamented falsehood, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈਪਾਲ ਤਿਹਾਲ ਬਿਚਾਰੰ ॥ traipaal tihaal bichaaran | and recite your daily prayers three times a day. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਲਿ ਮਾਲਾ ਤਿਲਕ ਲਿਲਾਟੰ ॥ gal maalaa tilak lilaattan | The mala is around your neck, and the sacred tilak mark is on your forehead. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਇ ਧੋਤੀ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਪਾਟੰ ॥ due dhotee basatr kapaattan | You wear two loin cloths, and keep your head covered. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ jo jaanas brahaman karaman | If you know God and the nature of karma, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਫੋਕਟ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਕਰਮੰ ॥ sabh fokatt nisachai karaman | you know that all these rituals and beliefs are useless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਸਚੌ ਧੵਿਾਵੈ ॥ kahu naanak nisachau dhayiaavai | Says Nanak, meditate on the Lord with faith. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਟ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ bin satigur baatt na paavai |1| Without the True Guru, no one finds the Way. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਫਲੰ ਤਸੵ ਜਨਮਸੵ ਜਾਵਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਨ ਬਿੰਦਤੇ ॥ nihafalan tasay janamasay jaavad braham na bindate | The mortal’s life is fruitless, as long as he does not know God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਗਰੰ ਸੰਸਾਰਸੵ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤਰਹਿ ਕੇ ॥ saagaran sansaarasay gur parasaadee tareh ke | Only a few, by Guru’s Grace, cross over the world-ocean. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ karan kaaran samarath hai kahu naanak beechaar | The Creator, the Cause of causes, is All-powerful. Thus speaks Nanak, after deep deliberation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੇ ਵਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਲ ਰਖੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ kaaran karate vas hai jin kal rakhee dhaar |2| The Creation is under the control of the Creator. By His Power, He sustains and supports it. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗ ਸਬਦੰ ਗਿਆਨ ਸਬਦੰ ਬੇਦ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਹ ॥ jog sabadan giaan sabadan bed sabadan ta braahamanah | The Shabad is Yoga, the Shabad is spiritual wisdom; the Shabad is the Vedas for the Brahmin. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੵਤ੍ਰੀ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਸੂਦ੍ਰ ਸਬਦੰ ਪਰਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਹ ॥ khayatree sabadan soor sabadan soodr sabadan paraa kritah | The Shabad is heroic bravery for the Khshaatriya; the Shabad is service to others for the Soodra. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਸਬਦੰ ਤ ਏਕ ਸਬਦੰ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਉ ॥ sarab sabadan ta ek sabadan je ko jaanas bheo | The Shabad for all is the Shabad, the Word of the One God, for one who knows this secret. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਉ ॥੩॥ naanak taa ko daas hai soee niranjan deo |3| Nanak is the slave of the Divine, Immaculate Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਕ੍ਰਿਸ੍ਨੰ ਤ ਸਰਬ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਾ ਤ ਆਤਮਹ ॥ ek krisanan ta sarab devaa dev devaa ta aatamah | The One Lord is the Divinity of all divinities. He is the Divinity of the soul. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਤਮੰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਾਸ੍ਵਦੇਵਸੵ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਭੇਵ ॥ aataman sree baasvadevasay je koee jaanas bhev | Nanak is the slave of that one who knows the Secrets of the soul and the Supreme Lord God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਹੈ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਦੇਵ ॥੪॥ naanak taa ko daas hai soee niranjan dev |4| He is the Divine Immaculate Lord Himself. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਤੰਚ ਮਾਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਤੰਚ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਸੁਤਹ ॥ katanch maataa katanch pitaa katanch banitaa binod sutah | Who is the mother, and who is the father? Who is the son, and what is the pleasure of marriage? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਤੰਚ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਹਿਤ ਬੰਧਵ ਕਤੰਚ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੵਤੇ ॥ katanch bhraat meet hit bandhav katanch moh kuttanbayate | Who is the brother, friend, companion and relative? Who is emotionally attached to the family? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਤੰਚ ਚਪਲ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਰੂਪੰ ਪੇਖੰਤੇ ਤਿਆਗੰ ਕਰੋਤਿ ॥ katanch chapal mohanee roopan pekhante tiaagan karot | Who is restlessly attached to beauty? It leaves, as soon as we see it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਹੰਤ ਸੰਗ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਲਬਧੵੰ ਅਚੁਤ ਤਨਹ ॥੧॥ rahant sang bhagavaan simaran naanak labadhayan achut tanah |1| Only the meditative remembrance of God remains with us. O Nanak, it brings the blessings of the Saints, the sons of the Imperishable Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
