ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਮਹਾ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥ man meh krodh mahaa ahankaaraa | Within the mind dwell anger and massive ego. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥ poojaa kareh bahut bisathaaraa | Worship services are performed with great pomp and ceremony. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਤਨਿ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ॥ kar isanaan tan chakr banaae | Ritual cleansing baths are taken, and sacred marks are applied to the body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ antar kee mal kab hee na jaae |1| But still, the filth and pollution within never depart. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਤੁ ਸੰਜਮਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ eit sanjam prabh kin hee na paaeaa | No one has ever found God in this way. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਉਤੀ ਮੁਦ੍ਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bhgautee mudraa man mohiaa maaeaa |1| rahaau | The sacred mudras - ritualistic hand gestures - are made, but the mind remains enticed by Maya. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੰਚਾਂ ਕੇ ਬਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ paap kareh panchaan ke bas re | They commit sins, under the influence of the five thieves. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਇ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਉਤਰੇ ॥ teerath naae kaheh sabh utare | They bathe at sacred shrines, and claim that everything has been washed off. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸੰਕ ॥ bahur kamaaveh hoe nisank | Then they commit them again, without fear of the consequences. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਂਧਿ ਖਰੇ ਕਾਲੰਕ ॥੨॥ jam pur baandh khare kaalank |2| The sinners are bound and gagged, and taken to the City of Death. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘੂਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਬਜਾਵਹਿ ਤਾਲਾ ॥ ghooghar baadh bajaaveh taalaa | The ankle-bells shake and the cymbals vibrate, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥ antar kapatt fireh betaalaa | but those who have deception within wander lost like demons. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਰਮੀ ਮਾਰੀ ਸਾਪੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ॥ varamee maaree saap na mooaa | By destroying its hole, the snake is not killed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ॥੩॥ prabh sabh kichh jaanai jin too keea |3| God, who created you, knows everything. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੂੰਅਰ ਤਾਪ ਗੇਰੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰਾ ॥ poonar taap geree ke basatraa | You worship fire and wear saffron colored robes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪਦਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤੇ ਨਸਤਾ ॥ apadaa kaa maariaa grih te nasataa | Stung by your misfortune, you abandon your home. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੇਸੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਦੇਸਹਿ ਧਾਇਆ ॥ des chhodd paradeseh dhaaeaa | Leaving your own country, you wander in foreign lands. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਚੰਡਾਲ ਨਾਲੇ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥ panch chanddaal naale lai aaeaa |4| But you bring the five rejects with you. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਨ ਫਰਾਇ ਹਿਰਾਏ ਟੂਕਾ ॥ kaan faraae hiraae ttookaa | You have split your ears, and now you steal crumbs. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਨ ਤੇ ਚੂਕਾ ॥ ghar ghar maangai tripataavan te chookaa | You beg from door to door, but you fail to be satisfied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਨਿਤਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਬਦ ਨਦਰਿ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ banitaa chhodd bad nadar par naaree | You have abandoned your own wife, but now you sneak glances at other women. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵੇਸਿ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖਿਆਰੀ ॥੫॥ ves na paaeeai mahaa dukhiaaree |5| God is not found by wearing religious robes; you are utterly miserable! ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੋਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਮੋਨੀ ॥ bolai naahee hoe baitthaa monee | He does not speak; he is on silence. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਲਪ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ॥ antar kalap bhavaaeeai jonee | But he is filled with desire; he is made to wander in reincarnation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਨ ਤੇ ਰਹਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਹਤਾ ॥ an te rahataa dukh dehee sahataa | Abstaining from food, his body suffers in pain. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਮਮਤਾ ॥੬॥ hukam na boojhai viaapiaa mamataa |6| He does not realize the Hukam of the Lord’s Command; he is afflicted by possessiveness. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥ bin satigur kinai na paaee param gate | Without the True Guru, no one has attained the supreme status. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੂਛਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਬੇਦ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੇ ॥ poochhahu sagal bed sinmrite | Go ahead and ask all the Vedas and the Simritees. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥ manamukh karam karai ajaaee | The self-willed manmukhs do useless deeds. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਘਰ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਈ ॥੭॥ jiau baaloo ghar tthaur na tthaaee |7| They are like a house of sand, which cannot stand. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਭਏ ਗੋੁਬਿੰਦ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ jis no bhe guobind deaalaa | One unto whom the Lord of the Universe becomes Merciful, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਪਾਲਾ ॥ gur kaa bachan tin baadhio paalaa | sews the Word of the Guru’s Shabad into his robes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ kott madhe koee sant dikhaaeaa | Out of millions, it is rare that such a Saint is seen. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ naanak tin kai sang taraaeaa |8| O Nanak, with him, we are carried across. ||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਤਾ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ je hovai bhaag taa darasan paaeeai | If one has such good destiny, then the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is obtained. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਤਰਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੨॥ aap tarai sabh kuttanb taraaeeai |1| rahaau doojaa |2| He saves himself, and carries across all his family as well. ||1||SECOND PAUSE||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥ prabhaatee mahalaa 5 | Prabhaatee, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਟੇ ॥ simarat naam kilabikh sabh kaatte | Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, all the sins are erased. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਕਾਗਰ ਫਾਟੇ ॥ dharam raae ke kaagar faatte | The accounts held by the Righteous Judge of Dharma are torn up. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ saadhasangat mil har ras paaeaa | Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ paarabraham rid maeh samaaeaa |1| I have found the Sublime Essence of the Lord. The Supreme Lord God has melted into my heart. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ raam ramat har har sukh paaeaa | Dwelling on the Lord, Har, Har, I have found peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੇ ਦਾਸ ਚਰਨ ਸਰਨਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ tere daas charan saranaaeaa |1| rahaau | Your slaves seek the Sanctuary of Your Feet. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚੂਕਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟਿਆ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੁ ॥ chookaa gaun mittiaa andhiaar | The cycle of reincarnation is ended, and darkness is dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ gur dikhalaaeaa mukat duaar | The Guru has revealed the door of liberation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸਦ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ har prem bhagat man tan sad raataa | My mind and body are forever imbued with loving devotion to the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਨਾਇਆ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਤਾ ॥੨॥ prabhoo janaaeaa tab hee jaataa |2| Now I know God, because He has made me know Him. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਵਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥ ghatt ghatt antar raviaa soe | He is contained in each and every heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੀਜੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ tis bin beejo naahee koe | Without Him, there is no one at all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬੈਰ ਬਿਰੋਧ ਛੇਦੇ ਭੈ ਭਰਮਾਂ ॥ bair birodh chhede bhai bharamaan | Hatred, conflict, fear and doubt have been eliminated. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਆਤਮੈ ਕੀਨੇ ਧਰਮਾ ॥੩॥ prabh pun aatamai keene dharamaa |3| God, the Soul of Pure Goodness, has manifested His Righteousness. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਹਾ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੇ ਕਾਂਢੈ ਲਾਗਾ ॥ mahaa tarang te kaandtai laagaa | He has rescued me from the most dangerous waves. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕਾ ਟੂਟਾ ਗਾਂਢਾ ॥ janam janam kaa ttoottaa gaandtaa | Separated from Him for countless lifetimes, I am united with Him once again. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਿਆ ॥ jap tap sanjam naam samaaliaa | Chanting, intense meditation and strict self-discipline are the contemplation of the Naam. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪੁਨੈ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥੪॥ apunai tthaakur nadar nihaaliaa |4| My Lord and Master has blessed me with His Glance of Grace. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੰਗਲ ਸੂਖ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਤਿਥਾਈਂ ॥ mangal sookh kaliaan tithaaeen | Bliss, peace and salvation are found in that place, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
