ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਾਗ੍ਰਣੁ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਪਵਈ ਥਾਇ ॥ haumai vich jaagran na hovee har bhagat na pavee thaae | In egotism, one cannot remain awake and aware, and one’s devotional worship of the Lord is not accepted. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨਾ ਲਹਹਿ ਭਾਇ ਦੂਜੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੪॥ manamukh dar dtoee naa laheh bhaae doojai karam kamaae |4| The self-willed manmukhs find no place in the Court of the Lord; they do their deeds in the love of duality. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਖਾਣਾ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਪੈਨੑਣਾ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ dhrig khaanaa dhrig painanaa jinaa doojai bhaae piaar | Cursed is the food, and cursed are the clothes, of those who are attached to the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੫॥ bisattaa ke keerre bisattaa raate mar jameh hohi khuaar |5| They are like maggots in manure, sinking into manure. In death and rebirth, they are wasted away to ruin. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ jin kau satigur bhettiaa tinaa vittahu bal jaau | I am a sacrifice to those who meet with the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਾਂ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਉ ॥੬॥ tin kee sangat mil rahaan sache sach samaau |6| I shall continue to associate with them; devoted to Truth, I am absorbed in Truth. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਉਪਾਇ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ poorai bhaag gur paaeeai upaae kitai na paaeaa jaae | By perfect destiny, the Guru is found. He cannot be found by any efforts. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇ ॥੭॥ satigur te sehaj aoopajai haumai sabad jalaae |7| Through the True Guru, intuitive wisdom wells up; through the Word of the Shabad, egotism is burnt away. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਭਜੁ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਣੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ har saranaaee bhaj man mere sabh kichh karanai jog | O my mind, hurry to the Sanctuary of the Lord; He is Potent to do everything. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੮॥੨॥੭॥੨॥੯॥ naanak naam na veesarai jo kichh karai su hog |8|2|7|2|9| O Nanak, never forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Whatever He does, comes to pass. ||8||2||7||2||9|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਭਾਈ ਸੁਤੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ॥ maat pitaa bhaaee sut banitaa | Mother, father, siblings, children and spouse - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚੂਗਹਿ ਚੋਗ ਅਨੰਦ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਗਤਾ ॥ choogeh chog anand siau jugataa | involved with them, people eat the food of bliss. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਮਨ ਮੀਠ ਮੋੁਹਾਰਾ ॥ aurajh pario man meetth muohaaraa | The mind is entangled in sweet emotional attachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਨ ਗਾਹਕ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ gun gaahak mere praan adhaaraa |1| Those who seek God’s Glorious Virtues are the support of my breath of life. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕੁ ਹਮਾਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥ ek hamaaraa antarajaamee | My One Lord is the Inner-Knower, the Searcher of hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧਰ ਏਕਾ ਮੈ ਟਿਕ ਏਕਸੁ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ dhar ekaa mai ttik ekas kee sir saahaa vadd purakh suaamee |1| rahaau | He alone is my Support; He is my only Protection. My Great Lord and Master is over and above the heads of kings. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਛਲ ਨਾਗਨਿ ਸਿਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਟੂਟਨਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ chhal naagan siau meree ttoottan hoee | I have broken my ties to that deceitful serpent. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਇਹ ਝੂਠੀ ਧੋਹੀ ॥ gur kahiaa ih jhootthee dhohee | The Guru has told me that it is false and fraudulent. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੁਖਿ ਮੀਠੀ ਖਾਈ ਕਉਰਾਇ ॥ mukh meetthee khaaee kauraae | Its face is sweet, but it tastes very bitter. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਘਾਇ ॥੨॥ amrit naam man rahiaa aghaae |2| My mind remains satisfied with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਸਿਉ ਗਈ ਵਿਖੋਟਿ ॥ lobh moh siau gee vikhott | I have broken my ties with greed and emotional attachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਛੋਟਿ ॥ gur kripaal mohi keenee chhott | The Merciful Guru has rescued me from them. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਹ ਠਗਵਾਰੀ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਘਰ ਗਾਲੇ ॥ eih tthagavaaree bahut ghar gaale | These cheating thieves have plundered so many homes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੇ ॥੩॥ ham gur raakh lee kirapaale |3| The Merciful Guru has protected and saved me. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਸਿਉ ਠਾਟੁ ਨ ਬਨਿਆ ॥ kaam krodh siau tthaatt na baniaa | I have no dealings whatsoever with sexual desire and anger. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਾਨੀ ਸੁਨਿਆ ॥ gur upades mohi kaanee suniaa | I listen to the Guru’s Teachings. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਹ ਦੇਖਉ ਤਹ ਮਹਾ ਚੰਡਾਲ ॥ jeh dekhau teh mahaa chanddaal | Wherever I look, I see the most horrible goblins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੪॥ raakh lee apunai gur gopaal |4| My Guru, the Lord of the World, has saved me from them. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਸ ਨਾਰੀ ਮੈ ਕਰੀ ਦੁਹਾਗਨਿ ॥ das naaree mai karee duhaagan | I have made widows of the ten sensory organs. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਏਹ ਰਸਹਿ ਬਿਖਾਗਨਿ ॥ gur kahiaa eeh raseh bikhaagan | The Guru has told me that these pleasures are the fires of corruption. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਨ ਸਨਬੰਧੀ ਰਸਾਤਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ ein sanabandhee rasaatal jaae | Those who associate with them go to hell. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੫॥ ham gur raakhe har liv laae |5| The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਹੰਮੇਵ ਸਿਉ ਮਸਲਤਿ ਛੋਡੀ ॥ ahamev siau masalat chhoddee | I have forsaken the advice of my ego. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਕਹਿਆ ਇਹੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਡੀ ॥ gur kahiaa ihu moorakh hoddee | The Guru has told me that this is foolish stubbornness. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਨੀਘਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ eihu neeghar ghar kahee na paae | This ego is homeless; it shall never find a home. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਮ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੀਏ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥੬॥ ham gur raakh lee liv laae |6| The Guru has saved me; I am lovingly attuned to the Lord. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਨ ਲੋਗਨ ਸਿਉ ਹਮ ਭਏ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥ ein logan siau ham bhe bairaaee | I have become alienated from these people. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਇ ਨ ਖਟਾਂਈ ॥ ek grih meh due na khattaanee | We cannot both live together in one home. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਏ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਹਿ ਅੰਚਰਿ ਲਾਗਿ ॥ aae prabh peh anchar laag | Grasping the hem of the Guru’s Robe, I have come to God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਹੁ ਤਪਾਵਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਬਾਗਿ ॥੭॥ karahu tapaavas prabh sarabaag |7| Please be fair with me, All-knowing Lord God. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਸਿ ਬੋਲੇ ਕੀਏ ਨਿਆਂਏਂ ॥ prabh has bole kee niaanen | God smiled at me and spoke, passing judgement. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਦੂਤ ਮੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥ sagal doot meree sevaa laae | He made all the demons perform service for me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੂੰ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥ toon tthaakur ihu grihu sabh teraa | You are my Lord and Master; all this home belongs to You. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
