ਆਪੇ ਖੇਲ ਕਰੇ ਸਭ ਕਰਤਾ ਐਸਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੩॥ aape khel kare sabh karataa aisaa boojhai koee |3| The Creator Himself plays all the games; only a few understand this. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਉ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਤੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਛੋਡਹੁ ਦੁਨੀ ਪਰੀਤਾ ॥ naau prabhaatai sabad dhiaaeeai chhoddahu dunee pareetaa | Meditate on the Name, and the Word of the Shabad, in the early hours before dawn; leave your worldly entanglements behind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਜਗਿ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਜੀਤਾ ॥੪॥੯॥ pranavat naanak daasan daasaa jag haariaa tin jeetaa |4|9| Prays Nanak, the slave of God’s slaves: the world loses, and he wins. ||4||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਧਾਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਪੰਖੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ॥ man maaeaa man dhaaeaa man pankhee aakaas | The mind is Maya, the mind is a chaser; the mind is a bird flying across the sky. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਸਕਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਵੁਠਾ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥ tasakar sabad nivaariaa nagar vutthaa saabaas | The thieves are overpowered by the Shabad, and then the body-village prospers and celebrates. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੈਹਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ jaa too raakheh raakh laihi saabat hovai raas |1| Lord, when You save someone, he is saved; his capital is safe and sound. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਸਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਨਿਧਿ ਮੇਰੈ ॥ aisaa naam ratan nidh merai | Such is my Treasure, the Jewel of the Naam; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੇਹਿ ਲਗਉ ਪਗਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramat dehi lgau pag terai |1| rahaau | please bless me with the Guru’s Teachings, so that I may fall at Your Feet. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਮਨੁ ਭੋਗੀਆ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਾਵਾਰੁ ॥ man jogee man bhogeea man moorakh gaavaar | The mind is a Yogi, the mind is a pleasure-seeker; the mind is foolish and ignorant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮਨੁ ਮੰਗਤਾ ਮਨ ਸਿਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ man daataa man mangataa man sir gur karataar | The mind is the giver, the mind is the beggar; the mind is the Great Guru, the Creator. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਮਾਰਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੨॥ panch maar sukh paaeaa aisaa braham veechaar |2| The five thieves are conquered, and peace is attained; such is the contemplative wisdom of God. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੀਐ ਕਹਉ ਨ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ ghatt ghatt ek vakhaaneeai khau na dekhiaa jaae | The One Lord is said to be in each and every heart, but no one can see Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੋਟੋ ਪੂਠੋ ਰਾਲੀਐ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ khotto poottho raaleeai bin naavai pat jaae | The false are cast upside-down into the womb of reincarnation; without the Name, they lose their honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਤਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਰਹਾਂ ਜਾਂ ਤੇਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੩॥ jaa too meleh taa mil rahaan jaan teree hoe rajaae |3| Those whom You unite, remain united, if it is Your Will. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹ ਪੂਛੀਐ ਸਚ ਘਰੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਬਤਾਇ ॥ jaat janam neh poochheeai sach ghar lehu bataae | God does not ask about social class or birth; you must find your true home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾ ਜਾਤਿ ਸਾ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਜੇਹੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ saa jaat saa pat hai jehe karam kamaae | That is your social class and that is your status - the karma of what you have done. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਾਟੀਐ ਨਾਨਕ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੧੦॥ janam maran dukh kaatteeai naanak chhoottas naae |4|10| The pains of death and rebirth are eradicated; O Nanak, salvation is in the Lord’s Name. ||4||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਾਗਤੁ ਬਿਗਸੈ ਮੂਠੋ ਅੰਧਾ ॥ jaagat bigasai moottho andhaa | He is awake, and even happy, but he is being plundered - he is blind! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ gal faahee sir maare dhandhaa | The noose is around his neck, and yet, his head is busy with worldly affairs. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸਾ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਸਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ aasaa aavai manasaa jaae | In hope, he comes and in desire, he leaves. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਰਝੀ ਤਾਣੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥੧॥ aurajhee taanee kichh na basaae |1| The strings of his life are all tangled up; he is utterly helpless. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਗਸਿ ਜੀਵਣ ਜਾਗਣਹਾਰਾ ॥ jaagas jeevan jaaganahaaraa | The Lord of Awareness, the Lord of Life is awake and aware. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sukh saagar amrit bhanddaaraa |1| rahaau | He is the Ocean of peace, the Treasure of Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਿਓ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਸੂਝੈ ਭੋਂਡੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ kahio na boojhai andh na soojhai bhonddee kaar kamaaee | He does not understand what he is told; he is blind - he does not see, and so he does his evil deeds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਰਮੇਸੁਰੁ ਕਰਮੀ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੨॥ aape preet prem paramesur karamee milai vaddaaee |2| The Transcendent Lord Himself showers His Love and Affection; by His Grace, He bestows glorious greatness. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਿਨੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਆਵੈ ਤਿਲੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਛੀਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਘਟਾਈ ॥ din din aavai til til chheejai maaeaa mohu ghattaaee | With the coming of each and every day, his life is wearing away, bit by bit; but still, his heart is attached to Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਬੂਡੋ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਬ ਲਗ ਦੂਜੀ ਰਾਈ ॥੩॥ bin gur booddo tthaur na paavai jab lag doojee raaee |3| Without the Guru, he is drowned, and finds no place of rest, as long as he is caught in duality. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਜੀਆ ਦੇਖਿ ਸਮੑਾਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ ahinis jeea dekh samaalai sukh dukh purab kamaaee | Day and night, God watches over and takes care of His living beings; they receive pleasure and pain according to their past actions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮਹੀਣੁ ਸਚੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਮਾਂਗੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥ karamaheen sach bheekhiaa maangai naanak milai vaddaaee |4|11| Nanak, the unfortunate one, begs for the charity of Truth; please bless him with this glory. ||4||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਸਟਿ ਕਰਉ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਜਗਿ ਕਹੀਆ ॥ masatt krau moorakh jag kaheea | If I remain silent, the world calls me a fool. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਧਿਕ ਬਕਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੀਆ ॥ adhik bkau teree liv raheea | If I talk too much, I miss out on Your Love. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੂਲ ਚੂਕ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥ bhool chook terai darabaar | My mistakes and faults will be judged in Your Court. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੧॥ naam binaa kaise aachaar |1| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, how can I maintain good conduct? ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਸੇ ਝੂਠਿ ਮੁਠੇ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ aise jhootth mutthe sansaaraa | Such is the falsehood which is plundering the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਨਿੰਦੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ nindak nindai mujhai piaaraa |1| rahaau | The slanderer slanders me, but even so, I love him. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਨਿੰਦਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ jis nindeh soee bidh jaanai | He alone knows the way, who has been slandered. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਦਰਿ ਨੀਸਾਣੈ ॥ gur kai sabade dar neesaanai | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, he is stamped with the Lord’s Insignia in His Court. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਰਣ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ kaaran naam antaragat jaanai | He realizes the Naam, the Cause of causes, deep within himself. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੨॥ jis no nadar kare soee bidh jaanai |2| He alone knows the way, who is blessed by the Lord’s Glance of Grace. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੈ ਮੈਲੌ ਊਜਲੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥ mai mailau aoojal sach soe | I am filthy and polluted; the True Lord is Immaculate and Sublime. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਤਮੁ ਆਖਿ ਨ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ aootam aakh na aoochaa hoe | Calling oneself sublime, one does not become exalted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਖੂਲਿੑ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥ manamukh khoola mahaa bikh khaae | The self-willed manmukh openly eats the great poison. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਾਇ ॥੩॥ guramukh hoe su raachai naae |3| But one who becomes Gurmukh is absorbed in the Name. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਧੌ ਬੋਲੌ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥ andhau bolau mugadh gavaar | I am blind, deaf, foolish and ignorant, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
