ਗੁਰੁ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਸਦਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਹਰੈ ॥ gur dareeaau sadaa jal niramal miliaa duramat mail harai | The Guru is the River, from which the Pure Water is obtained forever; it washes away the filth and pollution of evil-mindedness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਐ ਪੂਰਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤਹੁ ਦੇਵ ਕਰੈ ॥੨॥ satigur paaeiai pooraa naavan pasoo paretahu dev karai |2| Finding the True Guru, the perfect cleansing bath is obtained, which transforms even beasts and ghosts into gods. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਤਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਲ ਹੀਅਲੁ ਸੋ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮਲੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥ rataa sach naam tal heeal so gur paramal kaheeai | He is said to be the Guru, with the scent of sandalwood, who is imbued with the True Name to the bottom of His Heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਵਾਸੁ ਬਨਾਸਪਤਿ ਸਉਰੈ ਤਾਸੁ ਚਰਣ ਲਿਵ ਰਹੀਐ ॥੩॥ jaa kee vaas banaasapat saurai taas charan liv raheeai |3| By His Fragrance, the world of vegetation is perfumed. Lovingly focus yourself on His Feet. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਿਵ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ guramukh jeea praan upajeh guramukh siv ghar jaaeeai | The life of the soul wells up for the Gurmukh; the Gurmukh goes to the House of God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਈਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਿਜ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੪॥੬॥ guramukh naanak sach samaaeeai guramukh nij pad paaeeai |4|6| The Gurmukh, O Nanak, merges in the True One; the Gurmukh attains the exalted state of the self. ||4||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵਿਦਿਆ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ gur parasaadee vidiaa veechaarai parr parr paavai maan | By Guru’s Grace, contemplate spiritual knowledge; read it and study it, and you shall be honored. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਾ ਮਧੇ ਆਪੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਿਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ aapaa madhe aap paragaasiaa paaeaa amrit naam |1| Within the self, the self is revealed, when one is blessed with the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਤਾ ਤੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਜਮਾਨੁ ॥ karataa too meraa jajamaan | O Creator Lord, You alone are my Benefactor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕ ਦਖਿਣਾ ਹਉ ਤੈ ਪਹਿ ਮਾਗਉ ਦੇਹਿ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ eik dakhinaa hau tai peh maagau dehi aapanaa naam |1| rahaau | I beg for only one blessing from You: please bless me with Your Name. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਤਸਕਰ ਧਾਵਤ ਰਾਖੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਮਨਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ panch tasakar dhaavat raakhe chookaa man abhimaan | The five wandering thieves are captured and held, and the egotistical pride of the mind is subdued. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਿਸਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਾਗੀ ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥ disatt bikaaree duramat bhaagee aisaa braham giaan |2| Visions of corruption, vice and evil-mindedness run away. Such is the spiritual wisdom of God. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਚਾਵਲ ਦਇਆ ਕਣਕ ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਪਾਤੀ ਧਾਨੁ ॥ jat sat chaaval deaa kanak kar praapat paatee dhaan | Please bless me with the rice of truth and self-restraint, the wheat of compassion, and the leaf-plate of meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਧੁ ਕਰਮੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਘੀਉ ਕਰਿ ਐਸਾ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੩॥ doodh karam santokh gheeo kar aisaa maangau daan |3| Bless me with the milk of good karma, and the clarified butter, the ghee, of compassion. Such are the gifts I beg of You, Lord. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਿਮਾ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਊ ਲਵੇਰੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਬਛਰਾ ਖੀਰੁ ਪੀਐ ॥ khimaa dheeraj kar gaoo laveree sahaje bachharaa kheer peeai | Let forgiveness and patience be my milk-cows, and let the calf of my mind intuitively drink in this milk. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਰਮ ਕਾ ਕਪੜਾ ਮਾਂਗਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਵਤੁ ਰਹੈ ॥੪॥੭॥ sifat saram kaa kaparraa maangau har gun naanak ravat rahai |4|7| I beg for the clothes of modesty and the Lord’s Praise; Nanak chants the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||4||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਵਤੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਜਾਵਤੁ ਕਿਉ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥ aavat kinai na raakhiaa jaavat kiau raakhiaa jaae | No one can hold anyone back from coming; how could anyone hold anyone back from going? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਆ ਸੋਈ ਪਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਾਂ ਉਸ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ jis te hoaa soee par jaanai jaan us hee maeh samaae |1| He alone thoroughly understands this, from whom all beings come; all are merged and immersed in Him. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂਹੈ ਹੈ ਵਾਹੁ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥ toohai hai vaahu teree rajaae | Waaho! - You are Great, and Wondrous is Your Will. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਪਰੁ ਹੋਇਬਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jo kichh kareh soee par hoeibaa avar na karanaa jaae |1| rahaau | Whatever You do, surely comes to pass. Nothing else can happen. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੈਸੇ ਹਰਹਟ ਕੀ ਮਾਲਾ ਟਿੰਡ ਲਗਤ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਸਖਨੀ ਹੋਰ ਫੇਰ ਭਰੀਅਤ ਹੈ ॥ jaise harahatt kee maalaa ttindd lagat hai ik sakhanee hor fer bhareeat hai | The buckets on the chain of the Persian wheel rotate; one empties out to fill another. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੈਸੋ ਹੀ ਇਹੁ ਖੇਲੁ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਜਿਉ ਉਸ ਕੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥ taiso hee ihu khel khasam kaa jiau us kee vaddiaaee |2| This is just like the Play of our Lord and Master; such is His Glorious Greatness. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਰਤੀ ਕੈ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਚਲਿ ਕੈ ਉਲਟੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੀ ॥ suratee kai maarag chal kai ulattee nadar pragaasee | Following the path of intuitive awareness, one turns away from the world, and one’s vision is enlightened. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਦੇਖੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਉਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਉਨੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥੩॥ man veechaar dekh braham giaanee kaun girahee kaun udaasee |3| Contemplate this in your mind, and see, O spiritual teacher. Who is the householder, and who is the renunciate? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਸਉਪਿ ਕੈ ਏਹੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥ jis kee aasaa tis hee saup kai ehu rahiaa nirabaan | Hope comes from the Lord; surrendering to Him, we remain in the state of nirvaanaa. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਹੋਆ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੪॥੮॥ jis te hoaa soee kar maaniaa naanak girahee udaasee so paravaan |4|8| We come from Him; surrendering to Him, O Nanak, one is approved as a householder, and a renunciate. ||4||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਿਸਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਰੀ ਬੰਧਨਿ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਹਉ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥ disatt bikaaree bandhan baandhai hau tis kai bal jaaee | I am a sacrifice to that one who binds in bondage his evil and corrupted gaze. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਭੂਲਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ paap pun kee saar na jaanai bhoolaa firai ajaaee |1| One who does not know the difference between vice and virtue wanders around uselessly. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੋਲਹੁ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾਰ ॥ bolahu sach naam karataar | Speak the True Name of the Creator Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਫੁਨਿ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਣ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ fun bahurr na aavan vaar |1| rahaau | Then, you shall never again have to come into this world. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਚਾ ਤੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਨੀਚੁ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਨੀਚ ਕਰੈ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ॥ aoochaa te fun neech karat hai neech karai sulataan | The Creator transforms the high into the low, and makes the lowly into kings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੀ ਜਾਣੁ ਸੁਜਾਣਿਆ ਜਗਿ ਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੨॥ jinee jaan sujaaniaa jag te poore paravaan |2| Those who know the All-knowing Lord are approved and certified as perfect in this world. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਣ ਜਾਈਐ ਜੇ ਕੋ ਭੂਲਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ taa kau samajhaavan jaaeeai je ko bhoolaa hoee | If anyone is mistaken and fooled, you should go to instruct him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
