ਦੂਖਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਊਪਜਹਿ ਸੂਖੀ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਦੂਖ ॥ dookhaa te sukh aoopajeh sookhee hoveh dookh | Out of pain, pleasure is produced, and out of pleasure comes pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਤੂ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਅਹਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਕੈਸੀ ਭੂਖ ॥੩॥ jit mukh too saalaaheeeh tith mukh kaisee bhookh |3| That mouth which praises You - what hunger could that mouth ever suffer? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਅਵਰੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੈਸਾਰੁ ॥ naanak moorakh ek too avar bhalaa saisaar | O Nanak, you alone are foolish; all the rest of the world is good. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਊਪਜੈ ਸੇ ਤਨ ਹੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੪॥੨॥ jit tan naam na aoopajai se tan hohi khuaar |4|2| That body in which the Naam does not well up - that body becomes miserable. ||4||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਬੇਦ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੈ ਉਚਰੇ ਸੰਕਰਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ jai kaaran bed brahamai uchare sankar chhoddee maaeaa | For His sake, Brahma uttered the Vedas, and Shiva renounced Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਧ ਭਏ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਦੇਵੀ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ jai kaaran sidh bhe udaasee devee maram na paaeaa |1| For His sake, the Siddhas became hermits and renunciates; even the gods have not realized His Mystery. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਬਾ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਕਹੀਐ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਾਚਾ ਹੋਈ ॥ baabaa man saachaa mukh saachaa kaheeai tareeai saachaa hoee | O Baba, keep the True Lord in your mind, and utter the Name of the True Lord with your mouth; the True Lord will carry you across. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਸਮਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਹਰਿ ਮਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ dusaman dookh na aavai nerrai har mat paavai koee |1| rahaau | Enemies and pain shall not even approach you; only a rare few realize the Wisdom of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗਨਿ ਬਿੰਬ ਪਵਣੈ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੇ ਦਾਸਾ ॥ agan binb pavanai kee baanee teen naam ke daasaa | Fire, water and air make up the world; these three are the slaves of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੇ ਤਸਕਰ ਜੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲੇਵਹਿ ਵਾਸਹਿ ਕੋਟ ਪੰਚਾਸਾ ॥੨॥ te tasakar jo naam na leveh vaaseh kott panchaasaa |2| One who does not chant the Naam is a thief, dwelling in the fortress of the five thieves. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਏਕ ਕਰੈ ਚੰਗਿਆਈ ਮਨਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਫਾਵੈ ॥ je ko ek karai changiaaee man chit bahut bafaavai | If someone does a good deed for someone else, he totally puffs himself up in his conscious mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਏਤੀਆ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ਦੇਇ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਵੈ ॥੩॥ ete gun eteea changiaaeea dee na pachhotaavai |3| The Lord bestows so many virtues and so much goodness; He does not ever regret it. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥ tudh saalaahan tin dhan palai naanak kaa dhan soee | Those who praise You gather the wealth in their laps; this is Nanak’s wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜੀਉ ਕਹੈ ਓਨਾ ਕਉ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤਲਬ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੩॥ je ko jeeo kahai onaa kau jam kee talab na hoee |4|3| Whoever shows respect to them is not summoned by the Messenger of Death. ||4||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰੂਪੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੁਖੁ ਮਾਸਾ ॥ jaa kai roop naahee jaat naahee naahee mukh maasaa | One who has no beauty, no social status, no mouth, no flesh - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਹੈ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥ satigur mile niranjan paaeaa terai naam hai nivaasaa |1|
- meeting with the True Guru, he finds the Immaculate Lord, and dwells in Your Name. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਉਧੂ ਸਹਜੇ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥ aaudhoo sahaje tat beechaar | O detached Yogi, contemplate the essence of reality, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਆਵਹੁ ਸੈਸਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jaa te fir na aavahu saisaar |1| rahaau | and you shall never again come to be born into the world. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਰਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਧਰਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਸੁਚਿ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ jaa kai karam naahee dharam naahee naahee such maalaa | One who does not have good karma or Dharmic faith, sacred rosary or mala - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਵ ਜੋਤਿ ਕੰਨਹੁ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥੨॥ siv jot kanahu budh paaee satiguroo rakhavaalaa |2|
- through the Light of God, wisdom is bestowed; the True Guru is our Protector. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਬਰਤੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਨੇਮੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਕਬਾਈ ॥ jaa kai barat naahee nem naahee naahee bakabaaee | One who does not observe any fasts, make religious vows or chant - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਤਿ ਅਵਗਤਿ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥੩॥ gat avagat kee chint naahee satiguroo furamaaee |3|
- he does not have to worry about good luck or bad, if he obeys the Command of the True Guru. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਆਸ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਝਾਈ ॥ jaa kai aas naahee niraas naahee chit surat samajhaaee | One who is not hopeful, nor hopeless, who has trained his intuitive consciousness - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੰਤ ਕਉ ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੪॥ tant kau param tant miliaa naanakaa budh paaee |4|4|
- his being blends with the Supreme Being. O Nanak, his awareness is awakened. ||4||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਾ ਕਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥ taa kaa kahiaa dar paravaan | What he says is approved in the Court of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ bikh amrit due sam kar jaan |1| He looks upon poison and nectar as one and the same. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਸਰਬੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥ kiaa kaheeai sarabe rahiaa samaae | What can I say? You are permeating and pervading all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jo kichh varatai sabh teree rajaae |1| rahaau | Whatever happens, is all by Your Will. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਚੂਕਾ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥ pragattee jot chookaa abhimaan | The Divine Light shines radiantly, and egotistical pride is dispelled. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੨॥ satigur deea amrit naam |2| The True Guru bestows the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਲਿ ਮਹਿ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥ kal meh aaeaa so jan jaan | In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, one’s birth is approved, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਣੁ ॥੩॥ saachee daragah paavai maan |3| if one is honored in the True Court. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਣਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਅਕਥ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ kahanaa sunanaa akath ghar jaae | Speaking and listening, one goes to the Celestial Home of the Indescribable Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਨੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਲਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥੫॥ kathanee badanee naanak jal jaae |4|5| Mere words of mouth, O Nanak, are burnt away. ||4||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਗਿਆਨਿ ਮਨ ਮਜਨੁ ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਸੰਗਿ ਗਹੇ ॥ amrit neer giaan man majan atthasatth teerath sang gahe | One who bathes in the Ambrosial Water of spiritual wisdom takes with him the virtues of the sixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸਿ ਜਵਾਹਰ ਮਾਣਕ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਿਖੁ ਸੋੁ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ gur upades javaahar maanak seve sikh suo khoj lahai |1| The Guru’s Teachings are the gems and jewels; the Sikh who serves Him searches and finds them. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥ gur samaan teerath nahee koe | There is no sacred shrine equal to the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਤਾਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sar santokh taas gur hoe |1| rahaau | The Guru encompasses the ocean of contentment. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
