ਤਟਨ ਖਟਨ ਜਟਨ ਹੋਮਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਡੰਡਧਾਰ ਸੁਆਉ ॥੧॥ tattan khattan jattan homan naahee ddanddadhaar suaau |1| Making pilgrimages to sacred rivers, observing the six rituals, wearing matted and tangled hair, performing fire sacrifices and carrying ceremonial walking sticks - none of these are of any use. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਤਨ ਭਾਂਤਨ ਤਪਨ ਭ੍ਰਮਨ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਥਨ ਕਥਤੇ ਨਹੀ ਥਾਹ ਪਾਈ ਠਾਉ ॥ jatan bhaantan tapan bhraman anik kathan kathate nahee thaah paaee tthaau | All sorts of efforts, austerities, wanderings and various speeches - none of these will lead you to find the Lord’s Place. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਧਿ ਸਗਰ ਸੋਧਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਉ ॥੨॥੨॥੩੯॥ sodh sagar sodhanaa sukh naanakaa bhaj naau |2|2|39| I have considered all considerations, O Nanak, but peace comes only by vibrating and meditating on the Name. ||2||2||39|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨੈਨ ਤਿਪਤੇ ਦਰਸੁ ਪੇਖਿ ਜਸੁ ਤੋਖਿ ਸੁਨਤ ਕਰਨ ॥੧॥ nain tipate daras pekh jas tokh sunat karan |1| My eyes are satisfied, gazing upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan; my ears are satisfied, hearing His Praise. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਦਾਤੇ ਦੀਨ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸਰਨ ॥ praan naath anaath daate deen gobid saran | He is the Master of the praanaa, the breath of life; He is the Giver of Support to the unsupported. I am meek and poor - I seek the Sanctuary of the Lord of the Universe. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਦੁਖ ਬਿਨਾਸਨ ਗਹੀ ਓਟ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ॥੨॥੧॥੪੦॥ aas pooran dukh binaasan gahee ott naanak har charan |2|1|40| He is the Fulfiller of hope, the Destroyer of pain. Nanak grasps the Support of the Feet of the Lord. ||2||1||40|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਉਧਰਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ patit paavan birad suaamee udharate har dhiaae |1| rahaau | It is the Inherent Nature of our Lord and Master to purify sinners. Those who meditate on the Lord are saved. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੈਸਾਰ ਗਾਰ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਸਾਗਰ ਪਤਿਤ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਅੰਧ ॥ saisaar gaar bikaar saagar patit moh maan andh | The world is a swamp of wickedness and corruption. The blind sinner has fallen into the ocean of emotional attachment and pride, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਕਲ ਮਾਇਆ ਸੰਗਿ ਧੰਧ ॥ bikal maaeaa sang dhandh | bewildered by the entanglements of Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰੁ ਗਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਪਿ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥ kar gahe prabh aap kaadtahu raakh lehu gobind raae |1| God Himself has taken me by the hand and lifted me up and out of it; save me, O Sovereign Lord of the Universe. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਰੂਖੋ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਭੂਮਿ ਸੈਨ ਸਖੀ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੂਖਿ ਬਿਹਾਤ ॥੨॥੩॥੪੨॥ rookho bhojan bhoom sain sakhee pria sang sookh bihaat |2|3|42| Even with only dry crusts of bread, and a hard floor on which to sleep, my life passes in peace and pleasure with my Beloved, O sisters. ||2||3||42|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤ ਮਨੁ ਲੋਰੋ ॥ gur gur karat man loro | Let your yearning mind call out, “Guru, Guru”. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਆਗਨਿ ਚੈਨਾ ਤੋਰੋ ਰੀ ਤੋਰੋ ਪੰਚ ਦੂਤਨ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਤੋਰੋ ॥੧॥ grihi sej suhaavee aagan chainaa toro ree toro panch dootan siau sang toro |1| The bed of your household shall be cozy, and your courtyard shall be comfortable; shatter and break the bonds which tie you to the five thieves. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਬਸੇ ਨਿਜ ਆਸਨਿ ਊਂਧ ਕਮਲ ਬਿਗਸੋਰੋ ॥ aae na jaae base nij aasan aoondh kamal bigasoro | You shall not come and go in reincarnation; you shall dwell in your own home deep within, and your inverted heart-lotus shall blossom forth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਛੁਟਕੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਸੋਰੋ ॥ chhuttakee haumai soro | The turmoil of egotism shall be silenced. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜੋ ਸੰਤ ਬੇਦ ਕਹਤ ਪੰਥੁ ਗਾਖਰੋ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਅਹੰ ਤਾਪ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jo sant bed kehat panth gaakharo moh magan ahan taap | rahaau | The Vedas and the Saints say that the path is treacherous and difficult. You are intoxicated with emotional attachment and the fever of egotism. ||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਬਪੁਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥੧॥ jo raate maate sang bapuree maaeaa moh santaap |1| Those who are imbued and intoxicated with the wretched Maya, suffer the pains of emotional attachment. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਊ ਜਨੁ ਉਧਰੈ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ਆਪ ॥ naam japat soaoo jan udharai jiseh udhaarahu aap | That humble being is saved, who chants the Naam; You Yourself save him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
