ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਜਾਂ ਨਿਸਿ ਮੇਲਾ ਓਥੈ ਮੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥ eisatree purakhai jaan nis melaa othai mandh kamaahee | But when men and women meet in the night, they come together in the flesh. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਸਹੁ ਨਿੰਮੇ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਜੰਮੇ ਹਮ ਮਾਸੈ ਕੇ ਭਾਂਡੇ ॥ maasahu ninme maasahu jame ham maasai ke bhaandde | In the flesh we are conceived, and in the flesh we are born; we are vessels of flesh. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕਛੁ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਪਾਂਡੇ ॥ giaan dhiaan kachh soojhai naahee chatur kahaavai paandde | You know nothing of spiritual wisdom and meditation, even though you call yourself clever, O religious scholar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਹਰ ਕਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਮੰਦਾ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਘਰ ਕਾ ਮਾਸੁ ਚੰਗੇਰਾ ॥ baahar kaa maas mandaa suaamee ghar kaa maas changeraa | O master, you believe that flesh on the outside is bad, but the flesh of those in your own home is good. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਹੋਏ ਜੀਇ ਲਇਆ ਵਾਸੇਰਾ ॥ jeea jant sabh maasahu hoe jee leaa vaaseraa | All beings and creatures are flesh; the soul has taken up its home in the flesh. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਭਖੁ ਭਖਹਿ ਭਖੁ ਤਜਿ ਛੋਡਹਿ ਅੰਧੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਜਿਨ ਕੇਰਾ ॥ abhakh bhakheh bhakh taj chhoddeh andh guroo jin keraa | They eat the uneatable; they reject and abandon what they could eat. They have a teacher who is blind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਸੁ ਪੁਰਾਣੀ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਤੇਬਂੀ ਚਹੁ ਜੁਗਿ ਮਾਸੁ ਕਮਾਣਾ ॥ maas puraanee maas katebanee chahu jug maas kamaanaa | Meat is allowed in the Puraanas, meat is allowed in the Bible and the Koran. Throughout the four ages, meat has been used. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਜਿ ਕਾਜਿ ਵੀਆਹਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੈ ਓਥੈ ਮਾਸੁ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ jaj kaaj veeaeh suhaavai othai maas samaanaa | It is featured in sacred feasts and marriage festivities; meat is used in them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਪੁਰਖ ਨਿਪਜਹਿ ਮਾਸਹੁ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹ ਸੁਲਤਾਨਾਂ ॥ eisatree purakh nipajeh maasahu paatisaah sulataanaan | Women, men, kings and emperors originate from meat. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇ ਓਇ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਨੑ ਕਾ ਦਾਨੁ ਨ ਲੈਣਾ ॥ je oe diseh narak jaande taan una kaa daan na lainaa | If you see them going to hell, then do not accept charitable gifts from them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੇਂਦਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਲੈਦੇ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਧਿਙਾਣਾ ॥ dendaa narak surag laide dekhahu ehu dhingaanaa | The giver goes to hell, while the receiver goes to heaven - look at this injustice. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਲੋਕ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਪਾਂਡੇ ਖਰਾ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥ aap na boojhai lok bujhaae paandde kharaa siaanaa | You do not understand your own self, but you preach to other people. O Pandit, you are very wise indeed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਾਂਡੇ ਤੂ ਜਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਮਾਸੁ ਉਪੰਨਾ ॥ paandde too jaanai hee naahee kithahu maas upanaa | O Pandit, you do not know where meat originated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੋਇਅਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਕਮਾਦੁ ਕਪਾਹਾਂ ਤੋਇਅਹੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਗੰਨਾ ॥ toeiahu an kamaad kapaahaan toeiahu tribhavan ganaa | Corn, sugar cane and cotton are produced from water. The three worlds came from water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੋਆ ਆਖੈ ਹਉ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਹਛਾ ਤੋਐ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ toaa aakhai hau bahu bidh hachhaa toai bahut bikaaraa | Water says, “I am good in many ways.” But water takes many forms. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਏਤੇ ਰਸ ਛੋਡਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ ete ras chhodd hovai saniaasee naanak kahai vichaaraa |2| Forsaking these delicacies, one becomes a true Sannyaasee, a detached hermit. Nanak reflects and speaks. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਉ ਕਿਆ ਆਖਾ ਇਕ ਜੀਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕਿਨ ਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ hau kiaa aakhaa ik jeebh teraa ant na kin hee paaeaa | What can I say with only one tongue? I cannot find your limits. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਸੇ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ sachaa sabad veechaar se tujh hee maeh samaaeaa | Those who contemplate the True Word of the Shabad are absorbed into You, O Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕਿ ਭਗਵਾ ਵੇਸੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ eik bhagavaa ves kar bharamade vin satigur kinai na paaeaa | Some wander around in saffron robes, but without the True Guru, no one finds the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੇਸ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਭਵਿ ਥਕੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਪੁ ਲੁਕਾਇਆ ॥ des disantar bhav thake tudh andar aap lukaaeaa | They wander in foreign lands and countries until they grow weary, but You hide Yourself within them. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਤੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਆਪਿ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥ gur kaa sabad ratan hai kar chaanan aap dikhaaeaa | The Word of the Guru’s Shabad is a jewel, through which the Lord shines forth and reveals Himself. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪਣਾ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥ aapanaa aap pachhaaniaa guramatee sach samaaeaa | Realizing one’s own self, following the Guru’s Teachings, the mortal is absorbed into Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਬਜਾਰੀਆ ਬਾਜਾਰੁ ਜਿਨੀ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥ aavaa gaun bajaareea baajaar jinee rachaaeaa | Coming and going, the tricksters and magicians put on their magic show. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਕੁ ਥਿਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੫॥ eik thir sachaa saalaahanaa jin man sachaa bhaaeaa |25| But those whose minds are pleased by the True Lord, praise the True One, the Ever-stable Lord. ||25|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ salok mahalaa 1 | Salok, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਰਮ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਫਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲ ਵਿਸੁ ॥ naanak maaeaa karam birakh fal amrit fal vis | O Nanak, the tree of actions done in Maya yields ambrosial fruit and poisonous fruit. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਭ ਕਾਰਣ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਖਵਾਲੇ ਤਿਸੁ ॥੧॥ sabh kaaran karataa kare jis khavaale tis |1| The Creator does all deeds; we eat the fruits as He ordains. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਃ ੨ ॥ mahalaa 2 | Second Mehl: - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੀਆਂ ਵਡਿਆਈਆਂ ਅਗੀ ਸੇਤੀ ਜਾਲਿ ॥ naanak duneea keean vaddiaaeean agee setee jaal | O Nanak, burn worldly greatness and glory in the fire. - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਏਨੀ ਜਲੀਈਂ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਇਕ ਨ ਚਲੀਆ ਨਾਲਿ ॥੨॥ enee jaleeeen naam visaariaa ik na chaleea naal |2| These burnt offerings have caused mortals to forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Not even one of them will go along with you in the end. ||2|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥ sir sir hoe niberr hukam chalaaeaa | He judges each and every being; by the Hukam of His Command, He leads us on. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੇਰੈ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਬੇੜੁ ਤੂਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ terai hath niberr toohai man bhaaeaa | Justice is in Your Hands, O Lord; You are pleasing to my mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਾਲੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਬੰਨਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਰਖਸੀ ॥ kaal chalaae ban koe na rakhasee | The mortal is bound and gagged by Death and lead away; no one can rescue him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਰੁ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਕੰਨਿੑ ਚੜਿਆ ਨਚਸੀ ॥ jar jaravaanaa kana charriaa nachasee | Old age, the tyrant, dances on the mortal’s shoulders. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਬੇੜੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਸੀ ॥ satigur bohith berr sachaa rakhasee | So climb aboard the boat of the True Guru, and the True Lord will rescue you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੜਹਾੜੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਖਸੀ ॥ agan bhakhai bharrahaarr anadin bhakhasee | The fire of desire burns like an oven, consuming mortals night and day. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਫਾਥਾ ਚੁਗੈ ਚੋਗ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਛੁਟਸੀ ॥ faathaa chugai chog hukamee chhuttasee | Like trapped birds, the mortals peck at the corn; only through the Lord’s Command will they find release. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ਕੂੜੁ ਨਿਖੁਟਸੀ ॥੨੬॥ karataa kare su hog koorr nikhuttasee |26| Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass; falsehood shall fail in the end. ||26|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
