ਮਃ ੩ ॥ mahalaa 3 | Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਾਬੀਹਾ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਅ ਦਾਨ ॥ baabeehaa benatee kare kar kirapaa dehu jeea daan | The rainbird prays: O Lord, grant Your Grace, and bless me with the gift of the life of the soul. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਆਸ ਨ ਊਤਰੈ ਛੁਟਕਿ ਜਾਂਹਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥ jal bin piaas na aootarai chhuttak jaanhi mere praan | Without the water, my thirst is not quenched, and my breath of life is ended and gone. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤੂ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਬੇਅੰਤੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਨੇਧਾਨੁ ॥ too sukhadaataa beant hai gunadaataa nedhaan | You are the Giver of peace, O Infinite Lord God; You are the Giver of the treasure of virtue. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਅੰਤਿ ਬੇਲੀ ਹੋਇ ਭਗਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥ naanak guramukh bakhas le ant belee hoe bhagavaan |2| O Nanak, the Gurmukh is forgiven; in the end, the Lord God shall be your only friend. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੁਣ ਅਉਗਣ ਕਰੇ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ aape jagat upaae kai gun aaugan kare beechaar | He created the world; He considers the merits and demerits of the mortals. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਰਬ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ trai gun sarab janjaal hai naam na dhare piaar | Those who are entangled in the three gunas - the three dispositions - do not love the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਣ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਉਗਣ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਹੋਹਿ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ gun chhodd aaugan kamaavade daragah hohi khuaar | Forsaking virtue, they practice evil; they shall be miserable in the Court of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਤਿਨੀ ਹਾਰਿਆ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ jooai janam tinee haariaa kit aae sansaar | They lose their life in the gamble; why did they even come into the world? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥ sachai sabad man maariaa ahinis naam piaar | But those who conquer and subdue their minds, through the True Word of the Shabad - night and day, they love the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੀ ਪੁਰਖੀ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਸਚਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੁ ॥ jinee purakhee ur dhaariaa sachaa alakh apaar | Those people enshrine the True, Invisible and Infinite Lord in their hearts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹਹਿ ਅਸੀ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰ ॥ too gunadaataa nidhaan heh asee avaganiaar | You, O Lord, are the Giver, the Treasure of virtue; I am unvirtuous and unworthy. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਸੀ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧੩॥ jis bakhase so paaeisee gurasabadee veechaar |13| He alone finds You, whom You bless and forgive, and inspire to contemplate the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਤਿ ਨ ਵਿਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਕਤਾਂ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਨਾਉ ॥ raat na vihaavee saakataan jinaa visarai naau | The faithless cynics forget the Name of the Lord; the night of their lives does not pass in peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਤੀ ਦਿਨਸ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਂਉ ॥੧॥ raatee dinas suheleea naanak har gun gaanau |1| Their days and nights become comfortable, O Nanak, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕਾ ਹਭੇ ਮਣੀ ਮਥੰਨਿ ॥ ratan javehar maanakaa habhe manee mathan | All sorts of jewels and gems, diamonds and rubies, shine forth from their foreheads. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਭਾਣਿਆ ਸਚੈ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਹੰਨਿ ॥੨॥ naanak jo prabh bhaaniaa sachai dar sohan |2| O Nanak, those who are pleasing to God, look beautiful in the Court of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਿਆ ॥ sachaa satigur sev sach samaaliaa | Serving the True Guru, I dwell on the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਿ ਖਲੋਆ ਆਇ ਜਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਗੈ ਘਾਲਿਆ ॥ ant khaloaa aae ji satigur agai ghaaliaa | The work you have done for the True Guru shall be very useful in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਿਆ ॥ pohi na sakai jamakaal sachaa rakhavaaliaa | The Messenger of Death cannot even touch that person who is protected by the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜਗਾਇ ਦੀਵਾ ਬਾਲਿਆ ॥ gur saakhee jot jagaae deevaa baaliaa | Lighting the lamp of the Guru’s Teachings, my awareness has been awakened. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਬੇਤਾਲਿਆ ॥ manamukh vin naavai koorriaar fireh betaaliaa | The self-willed manmukhs are false; without the Name, they wander around like demons. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਸੂ ਮਾਣਸ ਚੰਮਿ ਪਲੇਟੇ ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਕਾਲਿਆ ॥ pasoo maanas cham palette andarahu kaaliaa | They are nothing more than beasts, wrapped up in human skin; they are black-hearted within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ॥ sabho varatai sach sachai sabad nihaaliaa | The True Lord is pervading all; through the True Word of the Shabad, He is seen. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਲਿਆ ॥੧੪॥ naanak naam nidhaan hai poorai gur dekhaaliaa |14| O Nanak, the Naam is the greatest treasure. The Perfect Guru has revealed it to me. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਬੀਹੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ baabeehai hukam pachhaaniaa gur kai sehaj subhaae | The rainbird realizes the Hukam of the Lord’s Command with intuitive ease through the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੇਘੁ ਵਰਸੈ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਗੂੜੀ ਛਹਬਰ ਲਾਇ ॥ megh varasai deaa kar goorree chhahabar laae | The clouds mercifully burst forth, and the rain pours down in torrents. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਾਬੀਹੇ ਕੂਕ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਰਹਿ ਗਈ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ baabeehe kook pukaar reh gee sukh vasiaa man aae | The cries and wailings of the rainbird have ceased, and peace has come to abide in its mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹੀਐ ਜਿ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਸਭਨਾਂ ਜੀਆ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ naanak so saalaaheeai ji dendaa sabhanaan jeea rijak samaae |1| O Nanak, praise that Lord, who reaches out and gives sustenance to all beings and creatures. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਚਾਤ੍ਰਿਕ ਤੂ ਨ ਜਾਣਹੀ ਕਿਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਤਿਖਾ ਹੈ ਕਿਤੁ ਪੀਤੈ ਤਿਖ ਜਾਇ ॥ chaatrik too na jaanahee kiaa tudh vich tikhaa hai kit peetai tikh jaae | O rainbird, you do not know what thirst is within you, or what you can drink to quench it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਰੰਮਿਆ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਲੈ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ doojai bhaae bharamiaa amrit jal palai na paae | You wander in the love of duality, and you do not obtain the Ambrosial Water. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾਂ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ nadar kare je aapanee taan satigur milai subhaae | When God casts His Glance of Grace, then the mortal automatically meets the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਲੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਹਜੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥ naanak satigur te amrit jal paaeaa sahaje rahiaa samaae |2| O Nanak, the Ambrosial Water is obtained from the True Guru, and then the mortal remains merged in the Lord with intuitive ease. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਵਣ ਖੰਡਿ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਸਦੁ ਨ ਦੇਵਹੀ ॥ eik van khandd baiseh jaae sad na devahee | Some go and sit in the forest realms, and do not answer any calls. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਲਾ ਕਕਰੁ ਭੰਨਿ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਜਲੁ ਹੇਂਵਹੀ ॥ eik paalaa kakar bhan seetal jal henvahee | Some, in the dead of winter, break the ice and immerse themselves in freezing water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਭਸਮ ਚੜੑਾਵਹਿ ਅੰਗਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਧੋਵਹੀ ॥ eik bhasam charraaveh ang mail na dhovahee | Some rub ashes on their bodies, and never wash off their dirt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਕੁਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਖੋਵਹੀ ॥ eik jattaa bikatt bikaraal kul ghar khovahee | Some look hideous, with their uncut hair matted and dishevelled. They bring dishonor to their family and ancestry. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
