ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਓ ਮਨਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋ ਪਤੀਆਇ ॥ bin satigur kinai na paaeo man vekhahu ko pateeae | Without the True Guru, no one finds the Lord; anyone can try and see. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਭੇਟੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥ har kirapaa te satigur paaeeai bhettai sehaj subhaae | By the Lord’s Grace, the True Guru is found, and then the Lord is met with intuitive ease. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥ manamukh bharam bhulaaeaa bin bhaagaa har dhan na paae |5| The self-willed manmukh is deluded by doubt; without good destiny, the Lord’s wealth is not obtained. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਭਾ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ trai gun sabhaa dhaat hai parr parr kareh veechaar | The three dispositions are completely distracting; people read and study and contemplate them. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਹੁ ਪਾਇਨਿੑ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥ mukat kade na hovee nahu paaeina mokh duaar | Those people are never liberated; they do not find the Door of Salvation. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬੰਧਨ ਨ ਤੁਟਹੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੬॥ bin satigur bandhan na tuttahee naam na lagai piaar |6| Without the True Guru, they are never released from bondage; they do not embrace love for the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮੋਨੀ ਥਕੇ ਬੇਦਾਂ ਕਾ ਅਭਿਆਸੁ ॥ parr parr panddit monee thake bedaan kaa abhiaas | The Pandits, the religious scholars, and the silent sages, reading and studying the Vedas, have grown weary. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਹ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ har naam chit na aavee neh nij ghar hovai vaas | They do not even think of the Lord’s Name; they do not dwell in the home of their own inner being. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੭॥ jamakaal sirahu na utarai antar kapatt vinaas |7| The Messenger of Death hovers over their heads; they are ruined by the deceit within themselves. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨੋ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਪਰਤਾਪਦਾ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਗਾਂ ਪਾਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥ har naavai no sabh ko parataapadaa vin bhaagaan paaeaa na jaae | Everyone longs for the Name of the Lord; without good destiny, it is not obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਮਨਿ ਆਇ ॥ nadar kare gur bhetteeai har naam vasai man aae | When the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, the mortal meets the True Guru, and the Lord’s Name comes to dwell within the mind. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੇ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਰਹਾਂ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੮॥੨॥ naanak naame hee pat aoopajai har siau rahaan samaae |8|2| O Nanak, through the Name, honor wells up, and the mortal remains immersed in the Lord. ||8||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥ ik oankaar satigur prasaad | One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਏ ॥ har har kripaa kare gur kee kaarai laae | When the Lord shows His Mercy, He enjoins the mortal to work for the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਖੁ ਪਲੑਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ dukh palar har naam vasaae | His pains are taken away, and the Lord’s Name comes to dwell within. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਾਚੀ ਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥ saachee gat saachai chit laae | True deliverance comes by focusing one’s consciousness on the True Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥੧॥ gur kee baanee sabad sunaae |1| Listen to the Shabad, and the Word of the Guru’s Bani. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ॥ man mere har har sev nidhaan | O my mind, serve the Lord, Har, Har, the true treasure. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ gur kirapaa te har dhan paaeeai anadin laagai sehaj dhiaan |1| rahaau | By Guru’s Grace, the wealth of the Lord is obtained. Night and day, focus your meditation on the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਪਿਰ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਂੀਗਾਰੁ ॥ bin pir kaaman kare saneegaar | The soul-bride who adorns herself without her Husband Lord, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਹਚਾਰਣੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥ duhachaaranee kaheeai nit hoe khuaar | is ill-mannered and vile, wasted away into ruin. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਇਹੁ ਬਾਦਿ ਆਚਾਰੁ ॥ manamukh kaa ihu baad aachaar | This is the useless way of life of the self-willed manmukh. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ॥੨॥ bahu karam drirraaveh naam visaar |2| Forgetting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he performs all sorts of empty rituals. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਬਣਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥ guramukh kaaman baniaa seegaar | The bride who is Gurmukh is beautifully embellished. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਬਦੇ ਪਿਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ sabade pir raakhiaa ur dhaar | Through the Word of the Shabad, she enshrines her Husband Lord within her heart. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥ ek pachhaanai haumai maar | She realizes the One Lord, and subdues her ego. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੋਭਾਵੰਤੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਨਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ sobhaavantee kaheeai naar |3| That soul-bride is virtuous and noble. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਦਾਤੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ bin gur daate kinai na paaeaa | Without the Guru, the Giver, no one finds the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖ ਲੋਭਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥ manamukh lobh doojai lobhaaeaa | The greedy self-willed manmukh is attracted and engrossed in duality. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਐਸੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ aise giaanee boojhahu koe | Only a few spiritual teachers realize this, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥ bin gur bhette mukat na hoe |4| that without meeting the Guru, liberation is not obtained. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ keh keh kehan kahai sabh koe | Everyone tells the stories told by others. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਮਨ ਮੂਏ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ bin man mooe bhagat na hoe | Without subduing the mind, devotional worship does not come. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਗਿਆਨ ਮਤੀ ਕਮਲ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥ giaan matee kamal paragaas | When the intellect achieves spiritual wisdom, the heart-lotus blossoms forth. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਨਾਮੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੫॥ tit ghatt naamai naam nivaas |5| The Naam, the Name of the Lord, comes to abide in that heart. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹਉਮੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥ haumai bhagat kare sabh koe | In egotism, everyone can pretend to worship God with devotion. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਨਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ naa man bheejai naa sukh hoe | But this does not soften the mind, and it does not bring peace. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਆਪੁ ਜਾਣਾਏ ॥ keh keh kehan aap jaanaae | By speaking and preaching, the mortal only shows off his self-conceit. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਿਰਥੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥੬॥ birathee bhagat sabh janam gavaae |6| His devotional worship is useless, and his life is a total waste. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸੇ ਭਗਤ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥ se bhagat satigur man bhaae | They alone are devotees, who are pleasing to the Mind of the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ anadin naam rahe liv laae | Night and day, they remain lovingly attuned to the Name. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵੇਖਹਿ ਹਜੂਰਿ ॥ sad hee naam vekheh hajoor | They behold the Naam, the Name of the Lord, ever-present, near at hand. - Guru Amardas Ji
