ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਕਰਣੀ ਊਤਮ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਜਗਿ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਿ ॥੩॥ har jan karanee aootam hai har keerat jag bisathaar |3| The lifestyle of the Lord’s humble servant is exalted and sublime. He spreads the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises throughout the world. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ kripaa kripaa kar tthaakur mere har har har ur dhaar | O my Lord and Master, please be merciful, merciful to me, that I may enshrine the Lord, Har, Har, Har, within my heart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੯॥ naanak satigur pooraa paaeaa man japiaa naam muraar |4|9| Nanak has found the Perfect True Guru; in his mind, he chants the Name of the Lord. ||4||9|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥ eihu man girahee ki ihu man udaasee | Is this mind a householder, or is this mind a detached renunciate? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਅਵਰਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਅਵਿਨਾਸੀ ॥ ki ihu man avaran sadaa avinaasee | Is this mind beyond social class, eternal and unchanging? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਕਿ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥ ki ihu man chanchal ki ihu man bairaagee | Is this mind fickle, or is this mind detached? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਿਥਹੁ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ eis man kau mamataa kithahu laagee |1| How has this mind been gripped by possessiveness? ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਇਸੁ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ panddit is man kaa karahu beechaar | O Pandit, O religious scholar, reflect on this in your mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਵਰੁ ਕਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਉਠਾਵਹਿ ਭਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ avar ki bahutaa parreh utthaaveh bhaar |1| rahaau | Why do you read so many other things, and carry such a heavy load? ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਾਈ ॥ maaeaa mamataa karatai laaee | The Creator has attached it to Maya and possessiveness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਏਹੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ॥ ehu hukam kar srisatt upaaee | Enforcing His Order, He created the world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥ gur parasaadee boojhahu bhaaee | By Guru’s Grace, understand this, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੨॥ sadaa rahahu har kee saranaaee |2| Remain forever in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਜੋ ਤਿਹਾਂ ਗੁਣਾ ਕੀ ਪੰਡ ਉਤਾਰੈ ॥ so panddit jo tihaan gunaa kee pandd utaarai | He alone is a Pandit, who sheds the load of the three qualities. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ anadin eko naam vakhaanai | Night and day, he chants the Name of the One Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਓਹੁ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਲੇਇ ॥ satigur kee ohu deekhiaa lee | He accepts the Teachings of the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਆਗੈ ਸੀਸੁ ਧਰੇਇ ॥ satigur aagai sees dharee | He offers his head to the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਅਲਗੁ ਰਹੈ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥ sadaa alag rahai nirabaan | He remains forever unattached in the state of Nirvaanaa. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੩॥ so panddit daragah paravaan |3| Such a Pandit is accepted in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭਨਾਂ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥ sabhanaan meh eko ek vakhaanai | He preaches that the One Lord is within all beings. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਵੇਖੈ ਤਾਂ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ jaan eko vekhai taan eko jaanai | As he sees the One Lord, he knows the One Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਬਖਸੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੋਇ ॥ jaa kau bakhase mele soe | That person, whom the Lord forgives, is united with Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਐਥੈ ਓਥੈ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥ aithai othai sadaa sukh hoe |4| He finds eternal peace, here and hereafter. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਵਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕੋਇ ॥ kehat naanak kavan bidh kare kiaa koe | Says Nanak, what can anyone do? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋਈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ soee mukat jaa kau kirapaa hoe | He alone is liberated, whom the Lord blesses with His Grace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ anadin har gun gaavai soe | Night and day, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕੂਕ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧॥੧੦॥ saasatr bed kee fir kook na hoe |5|1|10| Then, he no longer bothers with the proclamations of the Shaastras or the Vedas. ||5||1||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਭਰਮਾਈ ॥ bhram bhram jon manamukh bharamaaee | The self-willed manmukhs wander lost in reincarnation, confused and deluded by doubt. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ jamakaal maare nit pat gavaaee | The Messenger of Death constantly beats them and disgraces them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਚੁਕਾਈ ॥ satigur sevaa jam kee kaan chukaaee | Serving the True Guru, the mortal’s subservience to Death is ended. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੧॥ har prabh miliaa mehal ghar paaee |1| He meets the Lord God, and enters the Mansion of His Presence. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥ praanee guramukh naam dhiaae | O mortal, as Gurmukh, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਖੋਇਆ ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ janam padaarath dubidhaa khoeaa kauddee badalai jaae |1| rahaau | In duality, you are ruining and wasting this priceless human life. You trade it away in exchange for a shell. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਗੈ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ kar kirapaa guramukh lagai piaar | The Gurmukh falls in love with the Lord, by His Grace. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰੁ ॥ antar bhagat har har ur dhaar | He enshrines loving devotion to the Lord, Har, Har, deep within his heart. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭਵਜਲੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ bhavajal sabad langhaavanahaar | The Word of the Shabad carries him across the terrifying world-ocean. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਿਸੈ ਸਚਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ dar saachai disai sachiaar |2| He appears true in the True Court of the Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ bahu karam kare satigur nahee paaeaa | Performing all sorts of rituals, they do not find the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ bin gur bharam bhoole bahu maaeaa | Without the Guru, so many wander lost and confused in Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਬਹੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥ haumai mamataa bahu mohu vadhaaeaa | Egotism, possessiveness and attachment rise up and increase within them. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ doojai bhaae manamukh dukh paaeaa |3| In the love of dualty, the self-willed manmukhs suffer in pain. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਥਾਹਾ ॥ aape karataa agam athaahaa | The Creator Himself is Inaccessible and Infinite. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਜਪੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਹਾ ॥ gurasabadee japeeai sach laahaa | Chant the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, and earn the true profit. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਾਜਰੁ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ॥ haajar hajoor har veparavaahaa | The Lord is Independent, Ever-present, here and now. - Guru Amardas Ji
