ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਆਨੑੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ gur parasaadee ghatt chaananaa aanaer gavaaeaa | By Guru’s Grace, the heart is illumined, and darkness is dispelled. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਲੋਹਾ ਪਾਰਸਿ ਭੇਟੀਐ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਇ ਆਇਆ ॥ lohaa paaras bhetteeai kanchan hoe aaeaa | Iron is transformed into gold, when it touches the Philosopher’s Stone. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਨਾਉ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਿਲਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ naanak satigur miliai naau paaeeai mil naam dhiaaeaa | O Nanak, meeting with the True Guru, the Name is obtained. Meeting Him, the mortal meditates on the Name. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਿਨੑ ਕੈ ਪੋਤੈ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨੑੀ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੯॥ jina kai potai pun hai tinaee darasan paaeaa |19| Those who have virtue as their treasure, obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. ||19|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੧ ॥ salok mahalaa 1 | Salok, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਵਿਆ ਜਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਵੇਚਹਿ ਨਾਉ ॥ dhrig tinaa kaa jeeviaa ji likh likh vecheh naau | Cursed are the lives of those who read and write the Lord’s Name to sell it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੇਤੀ ਜਿਨ ਕੀ ਉਜੜੈ ਖਲਵਾੜੇ ਕਿਆ ਥਾਉ ॥ khetee jin kee ujarrai khalavaarre kiaa thaau | Their crop is devastated - what harvest will they have? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚੈ ਸਰਮੈ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਅਗੈ ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਦਾਦਿ ॥ sachai saramai baahare agai laheh na daad | Lacking truth and humility, they shall not be appreciated in the world hereafter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਕਲਿ ਏਹ ਨ ਆਖੀਐ ਅਕਲਿ ਗਵਾਈਐ ਬਾਦਿ ॥ akal eeh na aakheeai akal gavaaeeai baad | Wisdom which leads to arguments is not called wisdom. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਕਲੀ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਅਕਲੀ ਪਾਈਐ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ akalee saahib seveeai akalee paaeeai maan | Wisdom leads us to serve our Lord and Master; through wisdom, honor is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਕਲੀ ਪੜਿੑ ਕੈ ਬੁਝੀਐ ਅਕਲੀ ਕੀਚੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥ akalee parra kai bujheeai akalee keechai daan | Wisdom does not come by reading textbooks; wisdom inspires us to give in charity. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਆਖੈ ਰਾਹੁ ਏਹੁ ਹੋਰਿ ਗਲਾਂ ਸੈਤਾਨੁ ॥੧॥ naanak aakhai raahu ehu hor galaan saitaan |1| Says Nanak, this is the Path; other things lead to Satan. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਃ ੨ ॥ mahalaa 2 | Second Mehl: - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਜੈਸਾ ਕਰੈ ਕਹਾਵੈ ਤੈਸਾ ਐਸੀ ਬਨੀ ਜਰੂਰਤਿ ॥ jaisaa karai kahaavai taisaa aisee banee jaroorat | Mortals are known by their actions; this is the way it has to be. - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਹੋਵਹਿ ਲਿੰਙ ਝਿੰਙ ਨਹ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਐਸੀ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੂਰਤਿ ॥ hoveh ling jhing neh hoveh aisee kaheeai soorat | They should show goodness, and not be deformed by their actions; this is how they are called beautiful. - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਜੋ ਓਸੁ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ਤਾਂ ਨਾਨਕ ਕਹੀਐ ਮੂਰਤਿ ॥੨॥ jo os ichhe so fal paae taan naanak kaheeai moorat |2| Whatever they desire, they shall receive; O Nanak, they become the very image of God. ||2|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਹੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਿ ਫਲਿਆ ॥ satigur amrit birakh hai amrit ras faliaa | The True Guru is the tree of ambrosia. it bears the fruit of sweet nectar. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਲਹੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥ jis paraapat so lahai gurasabadee miliaa | He alone receives it, who is so pre-destined, through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋ ਚਲੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਲਿਆ ॥ satigur kai bhaanai jo chalai har setee raliaa | One who walks in harmony with the Will of the True Guru, is blended with the Lord. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਬਲਿਆ ॥ jamakaal johi na sakee ghatt chaanan baliaa | The Messenger of Death cannot even see him; his heart is illumined with God’s Light. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਗਰਭਿ ਨ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੨੦॥ naanak bakhas milaaeian fir garabh na galiaa |20| O Nanak, God forgives him, and blends him with Himself; he does not rot away in the womb of reincarnation ever again. ||20|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਸਚੁ ਵਰਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਤੀਰਥੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥ sach varat santokh teerath giaan dhiaan isanaan | Those who have truth as their fast, contentment as their sacred shrine of pilgrimage, spiritual wisdom and meditation as their cleansing bath, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਇਆ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਖਿਮਾ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਪਰਧਾਨ ॥ deaa devataa khimaa japamaalee te maanas paradhaan | kindness as their deity, and forgiveness as their chanting beads - they are the most excellent people. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੁਗਤਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਚਉਕਾ ਤਿਲਕੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ jugat dhotee surat chaukaa tilak karanee hoe | Those who take the Way as their loincloth, and intuitive awareness their ritualistically purified enclosure, with good deeds their ceremonial forehead mark, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਾਉ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਤ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ bhaau bhojan naanakaa viralaa ta koee koe |1| and love their food - O Nanak, they are very rare. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ॥ mahalaa 3 | Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਉਮੀ ਨੇਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਜੇ ਕਰੈ ॥ naumee nem sach je karai | On the ninth day of the month, make a vow to speak the Truth, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਚਰੈ ॥ kaam krodh trisanaa ucharai | and your sexual desire, anger and desire shall be eaten up. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦਸਮੀ ਦਸੇ ਦੁਆਰ ਜੇ ਠਾਕੈ ਏਕਾਦਸੀ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ dasamee dase duaar je tthaakai ekaadasee ek kar jaanai | On the tenth day, regulate your ten doors; on the eleventh day, know that the Lord is One. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਆਦਸੀ ਪੰਚ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨੈ ॥ duaadasee panch vasagat kar raakhai tau naanak man maanai | On the twelfth day, the five thieves are subdued, and then, O Nanak, the mind is pleased and appeased. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਐਸਾ ਵਰਤੁ ਰਹੀਜੈ ਪਾਡੇ ਹੋਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਸਿਖ ਕਿਆ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੨॥ aisaa varat raheejai paadde hor bahut sikh kiaa deejai |2| Observe such a fast as this, O Pandit, O religious scholar; of what use are all the other teachings? ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਰਾਜੇ ਰੰਗ ਰਾਇ ਸੰਚਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ bhoopat raaje rang raae sancheh bikh maaeaa | Kings, rulers and monarchs enjoy pleasures and gather the poison of Maya. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਦੇ ਪਰ ਦਰਬੁ ਚੁਰਾਇਆ ॥ kar kar het vadhaaeide par darab churaaeaa | In love with it, they collect more and more, stealing the wealth of others. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਵਿਸਹਹਿ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਇਆ ॥ putr kalatr na visaheh bahu preet lagaaeaa | They do not trust their own children or spouses; they are totally attached to the love of Maya. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਵੇਖਦਿਆ ਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੁਹਿ ਗਈ ਪਛੁਤਹਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਇਆ ॥ vekhadiaa hee maaeaa dhuhi gee pachhuteh pachhutaaeaa | But even as they look on, Maya cheats them, and they come to regret and repent. - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੨੧॥ jam dar badhe maareeeh naanak har bhaaeaa |21| Bound and gagged at Death’s door, they are beaten and punished; O Nanak, it pleases the Will of the Lord. ||21|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੀਤ ॥ giaan vihoonaa gaavai geet | The one who lacks spiritual wisdom sings religious songs. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭੁਖੇ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਘਰੇ ਮਸੀਤਿ ॥ bhukhe mulaan ghare maseet | The hungry Mullah turns his home into a mosque. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਖਟੂ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਕੰਨ ਪੜਾਏ ॥ makhattoo hoe kai kan parraae | The lazy unemployed has his ears pierced to look like a Yogi. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਫਕਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਹੋਰੁ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ fakar kare hor jaat gavaae | Someone else becomes a pan-handler, and loses his social status. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰੁ ਪੀਰੁ ਸਦਾਏ ਮੰਗਣ ਜਾਇ ॥ gur peer sadaae mangan jaae | One who calls himself a guru or a spiritual teacher, while he goes around begging - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਲਗੀਐ ਪਾਇ ॥ taa kai mool na lageeai paae |

  • don’t ever touch his feet. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘਾਲਿ ਖਾਇ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਥਹੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ ghaal khaae kichh hathahu dee | One who works for what he eats, and gives some of what he has - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਹੁ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਇ ॥੧॥ naanak raahu pachhaaneh see |1|
