ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥ likhiaa hovai naanakaa karataa kare su hoe |1| Whatever is predestined, happens, O Nanak; whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰੰਨਾ ਹੋਈਆ ਬੋਧੀਆ ਪੁਰਸ ਹੋਏ ਸਈਆਦ ॥ ranaa hoeea bodheea puras hoe seeaad | Women have become advisors, and men have become hunters. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੀਲੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸੁਚ ਭੰਨੀ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਜੁ ਅਹਾਜੁ ॥ seel sanjam such bhanee khaanaa khaaj ahaaj | Humility, self-control and purity have run away; people eat the uneatable, forbidden food. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਮੁ ਗਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਆਪਣੈ ਪਤਿ ਉਠਿ ਚਲੀ ਨਾਲਿ ॥ saram geaa ghar aapanai pat utth chalee naal | Modesty has left her home, and honor has gone away with her. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚਾ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਅਉਰੁ ਨ ਸਚਾ ਭਾਲਿ ॥੨॥ naanak sachaa ek hai aaur na sachaa bhaal |2| O Nanak, there is only One True Lord; do not bother to search for any other as true. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭਸਮ ਲੇਪਨ ਕਰੇ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੀ ॥ baahar bhasam lepan kare antar gubaaree | You smear your outer body with ashes, but within, you are filled with darkness. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਖਿੰਥਾ ਝੋਲੀ ਬਹੁ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੇ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ khinthaa jholee bahu bhekh kare duramat ahankaaree | You wear the patched coat and all the right clothes and robes, but you are still egotistical and proud. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਊਚਰੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਪਸਾਰੀ ॥ saahib sabad na aoocharai maaeaa moh pasaaree | You do not chant the Shabad, the Word of Your Lord and Master; you are attached to the expanse of Maya. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲਾਲਚੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਹੈ ਭਰਮੈ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ॥ antar laalach bharam hai bharamai gaavaaree | Within, you are filled with greed and doubt; you wander around like a fool. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਜੂਐ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੧੪॥ naanak naam na chetee jooai baajee haaree |14| Says Nanak, you never even think of the Naam; you have lost the game of life in the gamble. ||14|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਲਖ ਸਿਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਖ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਕਿਆ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਕਿਆ ਚਾਉ ॥ lakh siau preet hovai lakh jeevan kiaa khuseea kiaa chaau | You may be in love with tens of thousands, and live for thousands of years; but what good are these pleasures and occupations? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਵਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਵਿਛੋੜਾ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ vichhurriaa vis hoe vichhorraa ek gharree meh jaae | And when you must separate from them, that separation is like poison, but they will be gone in an instant. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਜੈ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇ ॥ je sau varhiaa mitthaa khaajai bhee fir kaurraa khaae | You may eat sweets for a hundred years, but eventually, you will have to eat the bitter as well. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਿਠਾ ਖਾਧਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਧਾਇ ਜਾਇ ॥ mitthaa khaadhaa chit na aavai kaurratan dhaae jaae | Then, you will not remember eating the sweets; bitterness will permeate you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਉੜਾ ਦੋਵੈ ਰੋਗ ॥ mitthaa kaurraa dovai rog | The sweet and the bitter are both diseases. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੁਤੇ ਭੋਗ ॥ naanak ant vigute bhog | O Nanak, eating them, you will come to ruin in the end. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਝਖਣਾ ਝਗੜਾ ਝਾਖ ॥ jhakh jhakh jhakhanaa jhagarraa jhaakh | It is useless to worry and struggle to death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝਖਿ ਝਖਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਝਖਹਿ ਤਿਨੑ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥ jhakh jhakh jaeh jhakheh tina paas |1| Entangled in worries and struggles, people exhaust themselves. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਾਪੜੁ ਕਾਠੁ ਰੰਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਂਗਿ ॥ kaaparr kaatth rangaaeaa raang | They have fine clothes and furniture of various colors. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਘਰ ਗਚ ਕੀਤੇ ਬਾਗੇ ਬਾਗ ॥ ghar gach keete baage baag | Their houses are painted beautifully white. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਦ ਸਹਜ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਖੇਲਾਇਆ ॥ saad sehaj kar man khelaaeaa | In pleasure and poise, they play their mind games. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੈ ਸਹ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਆ ॥ tai seh paasahu kehan kahaaeaa | When they approach You, O Lord, they shall be spoken to. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਿਠਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕਉੜਾ ਖਾਇਆ ॥ mitthaa kar kai kaurraa khaaeaa | They think it is sweet, so they eat the bitter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਨਿ ਕਉੜੈ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਜਮਾਇਆ ॥ tin kaurrai tan rog jamaaeaa | The bitter disease grows in the body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਿਠਾ ਪੇੜੈ ਪਾਇ ॥ je fir mitthaa perrai paae | If, later on, they receive the sweet, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਕਉੜਤਣੁ ਚੂਕਸਿ ਮਾਇ ॥ tau kaurratan chookas maae | then their bitterness shall be gone, O mother. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਇ ॥ naanak guramukh paavai soe | O Nanak, the Gurmukh is blessed to receive - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥ jis no praapat likhiaa hoe |2| what he is predestined to receive. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਹਰੁ ਧੋਵਾਇਆ ॥ jin kai hiradai mail kapatt hai baahar dhovaaeaa | Those whose hearts are filled with the filth of deception, may wash themselves on the outside. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਕੂੜੁ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਵਦੇ ਕੂੜੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਆ ॥ koorr kapatt kamaavade koorr paragattee aaeaa | They practice falsehood and deception, and their falsehood is revealed. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਨਹ ਛਪੈ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥ andar hoe su nikalai neh chhapai chhapaaeaa | That which is within them, comes out; it cannot be concealed by concealment. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਕੂੜੈ ਲਾਲਚਿ ਲਗਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੂਨੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ koorrai laalach lagiaa fir joonee paaeaa | Attached to falsehood and greed, the mortal is consigned to reincarnation over and over again. - Guru Ramdas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਖਾਵਣਾ ਕਰਤੈ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥ naanak jo beejai so khaavanaa karatai likh paaeaa |15| O Nanak, whatever the mortal plants, he must eat. The Creator Lord has written our destiny. ||15|| - Guru Ramdas Ji

ਕਥਾ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੇਦਂੀ ਆਣੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ kathaa kahaanee bedanee aanee paap pun beechaar | The Vedas bring forth stories and legends, and thoughts of vice and virtue. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਦੇ ਦੇ ਲੈਣਾ ਲੈ ਲੈ ਦੇਣਾ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥ de de lainaa lai lai denaa narak surag avataar | What is given, they receive, and what is received, they give. They are reincarnated in heaven and hell. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਉਤਮ ਮਧਿਮ ਜਾਤੀਂ ਜਿਨਸੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭਵੈ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥ autam madhim jaateen jinasee bharam bhavai sansaar | High and low, social class and status - the world wanders lost in superstition. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਤਤੁ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨ ਵਿਚਿ ਆਈ ॥ amrit baanee tat vakhaanee giaan dhiaan vich aaee | The Ambrosial Word of Gurbani proclaims the essence of reality. Spiritual wisdom and meditation are contained within it. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਂੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਧਿਆਈ ॥ guramukh aakhee guramukh jaatee suratanee karam dhiaaee | The Gurmukhs chant it, and the Gurmukhs realize it. Intuitively aware, they meditate on it. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਾਜਿ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਰਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥ hukam saaj hukamai vich rakhai hukamai andar vekhai | By the Hukam of His Command, He formed the Universe, and in His Hukam, He keeps it. By His Hukam, He keeps it under His Gaze. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤੁਟੈ ਤਾਂ ਕੋ ਲਿਖੀਐ ਲੇਖੈ ॥੧॥ naanak agahu haumai tuttai taan ko likheeai lekhai |1| O Nanak, if the mortal shatters his ego before he departs, as it is pre-ordained, then he is approved. ||1|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਪਾਪੁ ਸੁਰਗ ਨਰਕ ਕਾ ਬੀਉ ॥ bed pukaare pun paap surag narak kaa beeo | The Vedas proclaim that vice and virtue are the seeds of heaven and hell. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਬੀਜੈ ਸੋ ਉਗਵੈ ਖਾਂਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਜੀਉ ॥ jo beejai so ugavai khaandaa jaanai jeeo | Whatever is planted, shall grow. The soul eats the fruits of its actions, and understands. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਵਡਾ ਕਰਿ ਸਚੋ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ giaan salaahe vaddaa kar sacho sachaa naau | Whoever praises spiritual wisdom as great, becomes truthful in the True Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਬੀਜੈ ਸਚੁ ਉਗਵੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥ sach beejai sach ugavai daragah paaeeai thaau | When Truth is planted, Truth grows. In the Court of the Lord, you shall find your place of honor. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
