ਜਾਮਿ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਾਚ ਨਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jaam na bheejai saach naae |1| rahaau | if you are not drenched with the True Name. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਸ ਅਠ ਲੀਖੇ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਾਸਿ ॥ das atth leekhe hoveh paas | One may have the eighteen Puraanas written in his own hand; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਮੁਖਾਗਰ ਪਾਠਿ ॥ chaare bed mukhaagar paatth | he may recite the four Vedas by heart, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪੁਰਬੀ ਨਾਵੈ ਵਰਨਾਂ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥ purabee naavai varanaan kee daat | and take ritual baths at holy festivals and give charitable donations; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤਿ ॥੨॥ varat nem kare din raat |2| he may observe the ritual fasts, and perform religious ceremonies day and night. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥ kaajee mulaan hoveh sekh | He may be a Qazi, a Mullah or a Shaykh, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਭਗਵੇ ਭੇਖ ॥ jogee jangam bhagave bhekh | a Yogi or a wandering hermit wearing saffron-colored robes; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਕਰਮਾ ਕੀ ਸੰਧਿ ॥ ko girahee karamaa kee sandh | he may be a householder, working at his job; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਖੜੀਅਸਿ ਬੰਧਿ ॥੩॥ bin boojhe sabh kharreeas bandh |3| but without understanding the essence of devotional worship, all people are eventually bound and gagged, and driven along by the Messenger of Death. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਲਿਖੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥ jete jeea likhee sir kaar | Each person’s karma is written on his forehead. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਣੀ ਉਪਰਿ ਹੋਵਗਿ ਸਾਰ ॥ karanee upar hovag saar | According to their deeds, they shall be judged. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥ hukam kareh moorakh gaavaar | Only the foolish and the ignorant issue commands. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੇ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥੪॥੩॥ naanak saache ke sifat bhanddaar |4|3| O Nanak, the treasure of praise belongs to the True Lord alone. ||4||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੩ ਤੀਜਾ ॥ basant mahalaa 3 teejaa | Basant, Third Mehl: - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਦਿਗੰਬਰੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥ basatr utaar diganbar hog | A person may take off his clothes and be naked. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਟਾਧਾਰਿ ਕਿਆ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਜੋਗੁ ॥ jattaadhaar kiaa kamaavai jog | What Yoga does he practice by having matted and tangled hair? - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਦਸਵੈ ਦੁਆਰ ॥ man niramal nahee dasavai duaar | If the mind is not pure, what use is it to hold the breath at the Tenth Gate? - Guru Amardas Ji

ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਆਵੈ ਮੂੜੑਾ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥੧॥ bhram bhram aavai moorraa vaaro vaar |1| The fool wanders and wanders, entering the cycle of reincarnation again and again. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਮੂੜੑ ਮਨਾ ॥ ek dhiaavahu moorra manaa | Meditate on the One Lord, O my foolish mind, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਰਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਇਕ ਖਿਨਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ paar utar jaeh ik khinaan |1| rahaau | and you shall cross over to the other side in an instant. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਿਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਵਖਿਆਣ ॥ simrit saasatr kareh vakhiaan | Some recite and expound on the Simritees and the Shaastras; - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਪੜੑਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣ ॥ naadee bedee parreh puraan | some sing the Vedas and read the Puraanas; - Guru Amardas Ji

ਪਾਖੰਡ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਨਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥ paakhandd drisatt man kapatt kamaeh | but they practice hypocrisy and deception with their eyes and minds. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਰਮਈਆ ਨੇੜਿ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ tin kai rameea nerr naeh |2| The Lord does not even come near them. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜੇ ਕੋ ਐਸਾ ਸੰਜਮੀ ਹੋਇ ॥ je ko aisaa sanjamee hoe | Even if someone practices such self-discipline, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕ੍ਰਿਆ ਵਿਸੇਖ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ kriaa visekh poojaa karee | compassion and devotional worship - Guru Amardas Ji

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਨੁ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ antar lobh man bikhiaa maeh |

  • if he is filled with greed, and his mind is engrossed in corruption, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਓਇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਾਹਿ ॥੩॥ oe niranjan kaise paeh |3| how can he find the Immaculate Lord? ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਆ ਕਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਹੋਇ ॥ keetaa hoaa kare kiaa hoe | What can the created being do? - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਚਲਾਏ ਸੋਇ ॥ jis no aap chalaae soe | The Lord Himself moves him. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾਂ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥ nadar kare taan bharam chukaae | If the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, then his doubts are dispelled. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਹੁਕਮੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਤਾਂ ਸਾਚਾ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥ hukamai boojhai taan saachaa paae |4| If the mortal realizes the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, he obtains the True Lord. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਜੀਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਮੈਲਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ jis jeeo antar mailaa hoe | If someone’s soul is polluted within, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤੀਰਥ ਭਵੈ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਲੋਇ ॥ teerath bhavai disantar loe | what is the use of his traveling to sacred shrines of pilgrimage all over the world? - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲੀਐ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੰਗ ॥ naanak mileeai satigur sang | O Nanak, when one joins the Society of the True Guru, - Guru Amardas Ji

ਤਉ ਭਵਜਲ ਕੇ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਬੰਧ ॥੫॥੪॥ tau bhavajal ke toottas bandh |5|4| then the bonds of the terrifying world-ocean are broken. ||5||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬਸੰਤੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ basant mahalaa 1 | Basant, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਗਲ ਭਵਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ॥ sagal bhavan teree maaeaa moh | All the worlds have been fascinated and enchanted by Your Maya, O Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਰਬ ਤੋਹ ॥ mai avar na deesai sarab toh | I do not see any other at all - You are everywhere. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੂ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਾਥਾ ਦੇਵਾ ਦੇਵ ॥ too sur naathaa devaa dev | You are the Master of Yogis, the Divinity of the divine. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਨ ਸੇਵ ॥੧॥ har naam milai gur charan sev |1| Serving at the Guru’s Feet, the Name of the Lord is received. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਲਾਲ ॥ mere sundar gahir ganbheer laal | O my Beauteous, Deep and Profound Beloved Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਏ ਤੂ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸਰਬ ਪਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh raam naam gun gaae too aparanpar sarab paal |1| rahaau | As Gurmukh, I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord’s Name. You are Infinite, the Cherisher of all. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥ bin saadh na paaeeai har kaa sang | Without the Holy Saint, association with the Lord is not obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੈਲ ਮਲੀਨ ਅੰਗੁ ॥ bin gur mail maleen ang | Without the Guru, one’s very fiber is stained with filth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਨ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੋਇ ॥ bin har naam na sudh hoe | Without the Lord’s Name, one cannot become pure. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੨॥ gur sabad salaahe saach soe |2| Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, sing the Praises of the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਾ ਕਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਰਖਨਹਾਰ ॥ jaa kau too raakheh rakhanahaar | O Savior Lord, that person whom You have saved - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਾਰ ॥ satiguroo milaaveh kareh saar |

  • You lead him to meet the True Guru, and so take care of him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਖੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਪਰਹਰਾਇ ॥ bikh haumai mamataa paraharaae | You take away his poisonous egotism and attachment. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੩॥ sabh dookh binaase raam raae |3| You dispel all his sufferings, O Sovereign Lord God. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਊਤਮ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਸਰੀਰ ॥ aootam gat mit har gun sareer | His state and condition are sublime; the Lord’s Glorious Virtues permeate his body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਹੀਰ ॥ guramat pragatte raam naam heer | Through the Word of the Guru’s Teachings, the diamond of the Lord’s Name is revealed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਜਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ॥ liv laagee naam taj doojaa bhaau | He is lovingly attuned to the Naam; he is rid of the love of duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੪॥੫॥ jan naanak har gur gur milaau |4|5| O Lord, let servant Nanak meet the Guru. ||4||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੇਰੀ ਸਖੀ ਸਹੇਲੀ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਭਾਇ ॥ meree sakhee sahelee sunahu bhaae | O my friends and companions, listen with love in your heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮੇਰਾ ਪਿਰੁ ਰੀਸਾਲੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਾਇ ॥ meraa pir reesaaloo sang saae | My Husband Lord is Incomparably Beautiful; He is always with me. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਓਹੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਾਇ ॥ ohu alakh na lakheeai kahahu kaae | He is Unseen - He cannot be seen. How can I describe Him? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
