ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਸਿਉ ਘਾਲੈ ਧੰਧਾ ॥ par naaree siau ghaalai dhandhaa | and has an affair with another woman. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਜੈਸੇ ਸਿੰਬਲੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਸੂਆ ਬਿਗਸਾਨਾ ॥ jaise sinbal dekh sooaa bigasaanaa | He is like the parrot, who is pleased to see the simbal tree; - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਮੂਆ ਲਪਟਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ant kee baar mooaa lapattaanaa |1| but in the end, he dies, stuck to it. ||1|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਪਾਪੀ ਕਾ ਘਰੁ ਅਗਨੇ ਮਾਹਿ ॥ paapee kaa ghar agane maeh | The home of the sinner is on fire. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਜਲਤ ਰਹੈ ਮਿਟਵੈ ਕਬ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jalat rahai mittavai kab naeh |1| rahaau | It keeps burning, and the fire cannot be extinguished. ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ har kee bhagat na dekhai jaae | He does not go to see where the Lord is being worshipped. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਮਾਰਗੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਅਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਇ ॥ maarag chhodd amaarag paae | He abandons the Lord’s Path, and takes the wrong path. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਮੂਲਹੁ ਭੂਲਾ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ moolahu bhoolaa aavai jaae | He forgets the Primal Lord God, and is caught in the cycle of reincarnation. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਡਾਰਿ ਲਾਦਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਇ ॥੨॥ amrit ddaar laad bikh khaae |2| He throws away the Ambrosial Nectar, and gathers poison to eat. ||2|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਬੇਸ੍ਵਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੈ ਅਖਾਰਾ ॥ jiau besvaa ke parai akhaaraa | He is like the prostitute, who comes to dance, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਾਪਰੁ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਂੀਗਾਰਾ ॥ kaapar pahir kareh saneegaaraa | wearing beautiful clothes, decorated and adorned. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਤਾਲ ਨਿਹਾਲੇ ਸਾਸ ॥ poore taal nihaale saas | She dances to the beat, exciting the breath of those who watch her. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਵਾ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਫਾਸ ॥੩॥ vaa ke gale jam kaa hai faas |3| But the noose of the Messenger of Death is around her neck. ||3|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਕਰਮਾ ॥ jaa ke masatak likhio karamaa | One who has good karma recorded on his forehead, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਸੋ ਭਜਿ ਪਰਿ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਾ ॥ so bhaj par hai gur kee saranaa | hurries to enter the Guru’s Sanctuary. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਹਤ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਇਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ kehat naamadeo ihu beechaar | Says Naam Dayv, consider this: - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੮॥ ein bidh santahu utarahu paar |4|2|8| O Saints, this is the way to cross over to the other side. ||4||2||8|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਸੰਡਾ ਮਰਕਾ ਜਾਇ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ॥ ਪੜੈ ਨਹੀ ਹਮ ਹੀ ਪਚਿ ਹਾਰੇ ॥ sanddaa marakaa jaae pukaare | parrai nahee ham hee pach haare | Sanda and Marka went and complained to Harnaakhash, “Your son does not read his lessons. We are tired of trying to teach him. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਰਾਮੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਰ ਤਾਲ ਬਜਾਵੈ ਚਟੀਆ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਗਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ raam kahai kar taal bajaavai chatteea sabhai bigaare |1| He chants the Lord’s Name, clapping his hands to keep the beat; he has spoiled all the other students. ||1|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਜਪਿਬੋ ਕਰੈ ॥ raam naamaa japibo karai | He chants the Lord’s Name, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਧਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ hiradai har jee ko simaran dharai |1| rahaau | and he has enshrined meditative remembrance of the Lord within his heart.” ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਬਸਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਰਾਜੇ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਕਰੈ ਪਟਰਾਨੀ ॥ basudhaa bas keenee sabh raaje binatee karai pattaraanee | “Your father the king has conquered the whole world”, said his mother the queen. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਪੂਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦੁ ਕਹਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਨੈ ਤਿਨਿ ਤਉ ਅਉਰੈ ਠਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ poot prahilaad kahiaa nahee maanai tin tau aaurai tthaanee |2| “O Prahlad my son, you do not obey him, so he has decided to deal with you in another way.” ||2|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਦੁਸਟ ਸਭਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਤਰ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਕਰਸਹ ਅਉਧ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥ dusatt sabhaa mil mantar upaaeaa karasah aaudh ghaneree | The council of villians met and resolved to send Prahlaad into the life hereafter. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਗਿਰਿ ਤਰ ਜਲ ਜੁਆਲਾ ਭੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਫੇਰੀ ॥੩॥ gir tar jal juaalaa bhai raakhio raajaa raam maaeaa feree |3| Prahlaad was thrown off a mountain, into the water, and into a fire, but the Sovereign Lord God saved him, by changing the laws of nature. ||3|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਾਢਿ ਖੜਗੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਭੈ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਤਾਉ ਜੁ ਤੁਹਿ ਰਾਖੈ ॥ kaadt kharrag kaal bhai kopio mohi bataau ju tuhi raakhai | Harnaakhash thundered with rage and threatened to kill Prahlaad. “Tell me, who can save you?” - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਪੀਤ ਪੀਤਾਂਬਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਧਣੀ ਥੰਭ ਮਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਖੈ ॥੪॥ peet peetaanbar tribhavan dhanee thanbh maeh har bhaakhai |4| Prahlaad answered, “The Lord, the Master of the three worlds, is contained even in this pillar to which I am tied.” ||4|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਹਰਨਾਖਸੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਖਹ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਕੀਏ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥ haranaakhas jin nakhah bidaario sur nar kee sanaathaa | The Lord who tore Harnaakhash apart with His nails proclaimed Himself the Lord of gods and men. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਹਿ ਨਾਮਦੇਉ ਹਮ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਵਹ ਰਾਮੁ ਅਭੈ ਪਦ ਦਾਤਾ ॥੫॥੩॥੯॥ keh naamadeo ham narahar dhiaavah raam abhai pad daataa |5|3|9| Says Naam Dayv, I meditate on the Lord, the Man-lion, the Giver of fearless dignity. ||5||3||9|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਸੁਲਤਾਨੁ ਪੂਛੈ ਸੁਨੁ ਬੇ ਨਾਮਾ ॥ sulataan poochhai sun be naamaa | The Sultan said, “Listen, Naam Dayv: - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਦੇਖਉ ਰਾਮ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੇ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ dekhau raam tumaare kaamaa |1| let me see the actions of your Lord.” ||1|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਨਾਮਾ ਸੁਲਤਾਨੇ ਬਾਧਿਲਾ ॥ naamaa sulataane baadhilaa | The Sultan arrested Naam Dayv, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਬੀਠੁਲਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ dekhau teraa har beetthulaa |1| rahaau | and said, “Let me see your Beloved Lord.” ||1||Pause|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਗਊ ਦੇਹੁ ਜੀਵਾਇ ॥ bisamil gaoo dehu jeevaae | “Bring this dead cow back to life. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਨਾਤਰੁ ਗਰਦਨਿ ਮਾਰਉ ਠਾਂਇ ॥੨॥ naatar garadan maarau tthaane |2| Otherwise, I shall cut off your head here and now.” ||2|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਐਸੀ ਕਿਉ ਹੋਇ ॥ baadisaah aisee kiau hoe | Naam Dayv answered, “O king, how can this happen? - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਿਸਮਿਲਿ ਕੀਆ ਨ ਜੀਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥ bisamil keea na jeevai koe |3| No one can bring the dead back to life. ||3|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥ meraa keea kachhoo na hoe | I cannot do anything by my own actions. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੪॥ kar hai raam hoe hai soe |4| Whatever the Lord does, that alone happens.” ||4|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹੁ ਚੜਿੑਓ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਿ ॥ baadisaahu charrao ahankaar | The arrogant king was enraged at this reply. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਗਜ ਹਸਤੀ ਦੀਨੋ ਚਮਕਾਰਿ ॥੫॥ gaj hasatee deeno chamakaar |5| He incited an elephant to attack. ||5|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਰੁਦਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਕੀ ਮਾਇ ॥ rudan karai naame kee maae | Naam Dayv’s mother began to cry, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਛੋਡਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਕੀ ਨ ਭਜਹਿ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥੬॥ chhodd raam kee na bhajeh khudaae |6| And she said, “Why don’t you abandon your Lord Raam, and worship his Lord Allah?” ||6|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਨ ਹਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਪੂੰਗੜਾ ਨ ਤੂ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥ n hau teraa poongarraa na too meree maae | Naam Dayv answered, “I am not your son, and you are not my mother. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪੜੈ ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ॥੭॥ pindd parrai tau har gun gaae |7| Even if my body dies, I will still sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord.” ||7|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਰੈ ਗਜਿੰਦੁ ਸੁੰਡ ਕੀ ਚੋਟ ॥ karai gajind sundd kee chott | The elephant attacked him with his trunk, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਨਾਮਾ ਉਬਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥੮॥ naamaa ubarai har kee ott |8| but Naam Dayv was saved, protected by the Lord. ||8|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਕਾਜੀ ਮੁਲਾਂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਲਾਮੁ ॥ kaajee mulaan kareh salaam | The king said, “The Qazis and the Mullahs bow down to me, - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਇਨਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਲਿਆ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੯॥ ein hindoo meraa maliaa maan |9| but this Hindu has trampled my honor.” ||9|| - Bhagat Namdev Ji
ਬਾਦਿਸਾਹ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਸੁਨੇਹੁ ॥ baadisaah benatee sunehu | The people pleaded with the king, “Hear our prayer, O king. - Bhagat Namdev Ji
