ਅਹੰਬੁਧਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੈ ਮੈਲੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਫੇਰਾ ॥੩॥ ahanbudh duramat hai mailee bin gur bhavajal feraa |3| They are proud and arrogant, evil-minded and filthy; without the Guru, they are reincarnated into the terrifying world-ocean. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਸੰਜਮ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ hom jag jap tap sabh sanjam tatt teerath nahee paaeaa | Through burnt offerings, charitable feasts, ritualistic chants, penance, all sorts of austere self-discipline and pilgrimages to sacred shrines and rivers, they do not find God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਟਿਆ ਆਪੁ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਗਤੁ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੪॥ mittiaa aap pe saranaaee guramukh naanak jagat taraaeaa |4|1|14| Self-conceit is only erased when one seeks the Lord’s Sanctuary and becomes Gurmukh; O Nanak, he crosses over the world-ocean. ||4||1||14|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਉਦਾਸਾਏ ॥ ban meh pekhio trin meh pekhio grihi pekhio udaasaae | I have seen Him in the woods, and I have seen Him in the fields. I have seen Him in the household, and in renunciation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੰਡਧਾਰ ਜਟਧਾਰੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਵਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਤੀਰਥਾਏ ॥੧॥ danddadhaar jattadhaarai pekhio varat nem teerathaae |1| I have seen Him as a Yogi carrying His staff, as a Yogi with matted hair, fasting, making vows, and visiting sacred shrines of pilgrimage. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਮਨ ਮਾਏਂ ॥ santasang pekhio man maaen | I have seen Him in the Society of the Saints, and within my own mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਊਭ ਪਇਆਲ ਸਰਬ ਮਹਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਸਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ aoobh peaal sarab meh pooran ras mangal gun gaae |1| rahaau | In the sky, in the nether regions of the underworld, and in everything, He is pervading and permeating. With love and joy, I sing His Glorious Praises. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਗ ਭੇਖ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੈ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਜਤਿ ਜੰਗਮ ਕਾਪੜਾਏ ॥ jog bhekh saniaasai pekhio jat jangam kaaparraae | I have seen Him among the Yogis, the Sannyaasees, the celibates, the wandering hermits and the wearers of patched coats. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਪੀ ਤਪੀਸੁਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਨਿਰਤਾਏ ॥੨॥ tapee tapeesur mun meh pekhio natt naattik nirataae |2| I have seen Him among the men of severe self-discipline, the silent sages, the actors, dramas and dances. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਹੁ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਖਟ ਮਹਿ ਪੇਖਿਓ ਦਸ ਅਸਟੀ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾਏ ॥ chahu meh pekhio khatt meh pekhio das asattee sinmritaae | I have seen Him in the four Vedas, I have seen Him in the six Shaastras, in the eighteen Puraanas and the Simritees as well. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਵਖਾਨਹਿ ਤਉ ਕਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਉ ਦੁਰਾਏ ॥੩॥ sabh mil eko ek vakhaaneh tau kis te khau duraae |3| All together, they declare that there is only the One Lord. So tell me, from whom is He hidden? ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਗਹ ਅਗਹ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਨਹ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮ ਕੀਮਾਏ ॥ agah agah beant suaamee neh keem keem keemaae | Unfathomable and Inaccessible, He is our Infinite Lord and Master; His Value is beyond valuation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈਐ ਜਿਹ ਘਟਿ ਪਰਗਟੀਆਏ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੫॥ jan naanak tin kai bal bal jaaeeai jih ghatt paragatteeae |4|2|15| Servant Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those, within whose heart He is revealed. ||4||2||15|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੋ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥ nikatt bujhai so buraa kiau karai | How can anyone do evil, if he realizes that the Lord is near? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਖੁ ਸੰਚੈ ਨਿਤ ਡਰਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ॥ bikh sanchai nit ddarataa firai | One who gathers corruption, constantly feels fear. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੈ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਅਰੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ hai nikatte ar bhed na paaeaa | He is near, but this mystery is not understood. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਭ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ bin satigur sabh mohee maaeaa |1| Without the True Guru, all are enticed by Maya. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨੇੜੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ॥ nerrai nerrai sabh ko kahai | Everyone says that He is near, near at hand. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh bhed viralaa ko lahai |1| rahaau | But rare is that person, who, as Gurmukh, understands this mystery. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਦੇਖੈ ਪਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ nikatt na dekhai par grihi jaae | The mortal does not see the Lord near at hand; instead, he goes to the homes of others. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਰਬੁ ਹਿਰੈ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਕਰਿ ਖਾਇ ॥ darab hirai mithiaa kar khaae | He steals their wealth and lives in falsehood. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਈ ਠਗਉਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥ pee tthgauree har sang na jaaniaa | Under the influence of the drug of illusion, he does not know that the Lord is with him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥ baajh guroo hai bharam bhulaaniaa |2| Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਕੂੜੁ ॥ nikatt na jaanai bolai koorr | Not understanding that the Lord is near, he tells lies. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਮੂਠਾ ਹੈ ਮੂੜੁ ॥ maaeaa mohi mootthaa hai moorr | In love and attachment to Maya, the fool is plundered. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਦਿਸੰਤਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥ antar vasat disantar jaae | That which he seeks is within his own self, but he looks for it outside. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੩॥ baajh guroo hai bharam bhulaae |3| Without the Guru, he is confused and deluded by doubt. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਕਰਮੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਲਿਲਾਟ ॥ jis masatak karam likhiaa lilaatt | One whose good karma is recorded on his forehead - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਖੁਲੑੇ ਕਪਾਟ ॥ satigur seve khulae kapaatt | serves the True Guru; thus the hard and heavy shutters of his mind are opened wide. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਕਟੇ ਸੋਇ ॥ antar baahar nikatte soe | Within his own being and beyond, he sees the Lord near at hand. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੬॥ jan naanak aavai na jaavai koe |4|3|16| O servant Nanak, he does not come and go in reincarnation. ||4||3||16|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ jis too raakheh tis kaun maarai | Who can kill that person whom You protect, O Lord? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੈ ॥ sabh tujh hee antar sagal sansaarai | All beings, and the entire universe, is within You. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੋਟਿ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਤ ਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥ kott upaav chitavat hai praanee | The mortal thinks up millions of plans, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਹੋਵੈ ਜਿ ਕਰੈ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ so hovai ji karai choj viddaanee |1| but that alone happens, which the Lord of wondrous plays does. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰਿ ॥ raakhahu raakhahu kirapaa dhaar | Save me, save me, O Lord; shower me with Your Mercy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਦਰਵਾਰਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ teree saran terai daravaar |1| rahaau | I seek Your Sanctuary, and Your Court. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ jin seviaa nirbhau sukhadaataa | Whoever serves the Fearless Lord, the Giver of Peace, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਨਿ ਭਉ ਦੂਰਿ ਕੀਆ ਏਕੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ॥ tin bhau door keea ek paraataa | is rid of all his fears; he knows the One Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤੂ ਕਰਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫੁਨਿ ਹੋਇ ॥ jo too kareh soee fun hoe | Whatever You do, that alone comes to pass in the end. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਰੈ ਨ ਰਾਖੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ maarai na raakhai doojaa koe |2| There is no other who can kill or protect us. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਿਆ ਤੂ ਸੋਚਹਿ ਮਾਣਸ ਬਾਣਿ ॥ kiaa too socheh maanas baan | What do you think, with your human understanding? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥ antarajaamee purakh sujaan | The All-knowing Lord is the Searcher of Hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਟੇਕ ਏਕੋ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥ ek ttek eko aadhaar | The One and only Lord is my Support and Protection. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੩॥ sabh kichh jaanai sirajanahaar |3| The Creator Lord knows everything. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥ jis aoopar nadar kare karataar | That person who is blessed by the Creator’s Glance of Grace - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
