ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਰਖੈ ਸੁਨਾਇਆ ॥ khatt saasatr moorakhai sunaaeaa | The six Shaastras may be read to a fool, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੈਸੇ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਪਵਨੁ ਝੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ jaise deh dis pavan jhulaaeaa |3| but it is like the wind blowing in the ten directions. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਣ ਖਲਹਾਨੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਗਾਹਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ bin kan khalahaan jaise gaahan paaeaa | It is like threshing a crop without any corn - nothing is gained. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤ ਤੇ ਕੋ ਨ ਬਰਾਸਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ tiau saakat te ko na baraasaaeaa |4| In the same way, no benefit comes from the faithless cynic. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ॥ tit hee laagaa jit ko laaeaa | As the Lord attaches them, so are all attached. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੫॥ kahu naanak prabh banat banaaeaa |5|5| Says Nanak, God has formed such a form. ||5||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਜਿਨਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਸਰੀਰ ॥ jeeo praan jin rachio sareer | He created the soul, the breath of life and the body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਪੀਰ ॥੧॥ jineh upaae tis kau peer |1| He created all beings, and knows their pains. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਕਾਮ ॥ gur gobind jeea kai kaam | The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, is the Helper of the soul. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਦ ਛਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ halat palat jaa kee sad chhaam |1| rahaau | Here and herafter, He always provides shade. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਆਰਾਧਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਰੀਤਿ ॥ prabh aaraadhan niramal reet | Worship and adoration of God is the pure way of life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਬਿਨਸੀ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੨॥ saadhasang binasee bipareet |2| In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the love of duality vanishes. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੀਤ ਹੀਤ ਧਨੁ ਨਹ ਪਾਰਣਾ ॥ meet heet dhan neh paaranaa | Friends, well-wishers and wealth will not support you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਧੰਨਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਰਾਇਣਾ ॥੩॥ dhan dhan mere naaraaeinaa |3| Blessed, blessed is my Lord. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬੋਲੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ॥ naanak bolai amrit baanee | Nanak utters the Ambrosial Bani of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਬਿਨਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੬॥ ek binaa doojaa nahee jaanee |4|6| Except the One Lord, he does not know any other at all. ||4||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਆਗੈ ਦਯੁ ਪਾਛੈ ਨਾਰਾਇਣ ॥ aagai day paachhai naaraaein | The Lord is in front of me, and the Lord is behind me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਧਿ ਭਾਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਰਸਾਇਣ ॥੧॥ madh bhaag har prem rasaaein |1| My Beloved Lord, the Source of Nectar, is in the middle as well. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਉਣ ॥ prabhoo hamaarai saasatr saun | God is my Shaastra and my favorable omen. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨੰਦ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭਉਣ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ sookh sehaj aanand grih bhaun |1| rahaau | In His Home and Mansion, I find peace, poise and bliss. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਜੀਵੇ ॥ rasanaa naam karan sun jeeve | Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, with my tongue, and hearing it with my ears, I live. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਅਮਰ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਵੇ ॥੨॥ prabh simar simar amar thir theeve |2| Meditating, meditating in remembrance on God, I have become eternal, permanent and stable. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ॥ janam janam ke dookh nivaare | The pains of countless lifetimes have been erased. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਵਜੇ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥੩॥ anahad sabad vaje darabaare |3| The Unstruck Sound-current of the Shabad, the Word of God, vibrates in the Court of the Lord. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲੀਏ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ kar kirapaa prabh lee milaae | Granting His Grace, God has blended me with Himself. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਆਏ ॥੪॥੭॥ naanak prabh saranaagat aae |4|7| Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of God. ||4||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਮ ਮਾਰਗ ਕੈ ਸੰਗੀ ਪਾਂਥ ॥੧॥ jam maarag kai sangee paanth |1| On the Path of Death, It will go with you and help you. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੰਗਾ ਜਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਨਾਮ ॥ gangaa jal gur gobind naam | The Naam, the Name of the Lord of the Universe, is the holy water of the Ganges. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਪੀਵਤ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਮ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jo simarai tis kee gat hovai peevat bahurr na jon bhramaam |1| rahaau | Whoever meditates on it, is saved; drinking it in, the mortal does not wander in reincarnation again. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾਪ ਤਾਪ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥ poojaa jaap taap isanaan | It is my worship, meditation, austerity and cleansing bath. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਭਏ ਨਿਹਕਾਮ ॥੨॥ simarat naam bhe nihakaam |2| Meditating in remembrance on the Naam, I have become free of desire. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਜ ਮਾਲ ਸਾਦਨ ਦਰਬਾਰ ॥ raaj maal saadan darabaar | It is my domain and empire, wealth, mansion and court. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਨਾਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਚਾਰ ॥੩॥ simarat naam pooran aachaar |3| Meditating in remembrance on the Naam brings perfect conduct. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਇਹੁ ਕੀਆ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ naanak daas ihu keea beechaar | Slave Nanak has deliberated, and has come to this conclusion: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੮॥ bin har naam mithiaa sabh chhaar |4|8| Without the Lord’s Name, everything is false and worthless, like ashes. ||4||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਲੇਪੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੋ ਤਿਲ ਕਾ ਮੂਲਿ ॥ lep na laago til kaa mool | The poison had absolutely no harmful effect. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਸਟੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਮੂਆ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਸੂਲ ॥੧॥ dusatt braahaman mooaa hoe kai sool |1| But the wicked Brahmin died in pain. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਰਾਖੇ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਿ ਆਪਿ ॥ har jan raakhe paarabraham aap | The Supreme Lord God Himself has saved His humble servant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਪੀ ਮੂਆ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਤਾਪਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ paapee mooaa gur parataap |1| rahaau | The sinner died through the Power of the Guru. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪਣਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਜਨਿ ਆਪਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥ apanaa khasam jan aap dhiaaeaa | The humble servant of the Lord and Master meditates on Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਆਣਾ ਪਾਪੀ ਓਹੁ ਆਪਿ ਪਚਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ eaanaa paapee ohu aap pachaaeaa |2| He Himself has destroyed the ignorant sinner. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਅਪਣੇ ਦਾਸ ਕਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ prabh maat pitaa apane daas kaa rakhavaalaa | God is the Mother, the Father and the Protector of His slave. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਕਾ ਮਾਥਾ ਈਹਾਂ ਊਹਾ ਕਾਲਾ ॥੩॥ nindak kaa maathaa eehaan aoohaa kaalaa |3| The face of the slanderer, here and hereafter, is blackened. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥ jan naanak kee paramesar sunee aradaas | The Transcendent Lord has heard the prayer of servant Nanak. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਲੇਛੁ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਚਿਆ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੯॥ malechh paapee pachiaa bheaa niraas |4|9| The filthy sinner lost hope and died. ||4||9|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
