ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਹੋਇ ॥ giaan anjan satigur te hoe | The ointment of spiritual wisdom is obtained from the True Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਇ ॥੩॥ raam naam rav rahiaa tihu loe |3| The Lord’s Name is pervading the three worlds. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਲਿਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਏਕੁ ਹੋਰ ਰੁਤਿ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥ kalijug meh har jeeo ek hor rut na kaaee | In Kali Yuga, it is the time for the One Dear Lord; it is not the time for anything else. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਲੇਹੁ ਜਮਾਈ ॥੪॥੧੦॥ naanak guramukh hiradai raam naam lehu jamaaee |4|10| O Nanak, as Gurmukh, let the Lord’s Name grow within your heart. ||4||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਜਲਹਿ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ॥ dubidhaa manamukh rog viaape trisanaa jaleh adhikaaee | The self-willed manmukhs are afflicted with the disease of duality; they are burnt by the intense fire of desire. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੧॥ mar mar jameh tthaur na paaveh birathaa janam gavaaee |1| They die and die again, and are reborn; they find no place of rest. They waste their lives uselessly. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਦੇਹੁ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥ mere preetam kar kirapaa dehu bujhaaee | O my Beloved, grant Your Grace, and give me understanding. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ haumai rogee jagat upaaeaa bin sabadai rog na jaaee |1| rahaau | The world was created in the disease of egotism; without the Word of the Shabad, the disease is not cured. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਪੜਹਿ ਮੁਨਿ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ sinmrit saasatr parreh mun kete bin sabadai surat na paaee | There are so many silent sages, who read the Simritees and the Shaastras; without the Shabad, they have no clear awareness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਸਭੇ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਮਮਤਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨॥ trai gun sabhe rog viaape mamataa surat gavaaee |2| All those under the influence of the three qualities are afflicted with the disease; through possessiveness, they lose their awareness. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਏ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਲਾਏ ॥ eik aape kaadt le prabh aape gur sevaa prabh laae | O God, you save some, and you enjoin others to serve the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੋ ਪਾਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਵਸਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਆਏ ॥੩॥ har kaa naam nidhaano paaeaa sukh vasiaa man aae |3| They obtain the treasure of the Name of the Lord; peace comes to abide within their minds. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਚਉਥੀ ਪਦਵੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਰਤਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ chauthee padavee guramukh varateh tin nij ghar vaasaa paaeaa | The Gurmukhs dwell in the fourth state; they obtain a dwelling in the home of their own inner being. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕੀਨੀ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੪॥ poorai satigur kirapaa keenee vichahu aap gavaaeaa |4| The Perfect True Guru shows His Mercy to them; they eradicate their self-conceit from within. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਏਕਸੁ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਏਕ ਜਿਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਰੁਦ੍ਰੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ ekas kee sir kaar ek jin brahamaa bisan rudru upaaeaa | Everyone must serve the One Lord, who created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਨਾ ਓਹੁ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੧॥੧੧॥ naanak nihachal saachaa eko naa ohu marai na jaaeaa |5|1|11| O Nanak, the One True Lord is permanent and stable. He does not die, and He is not born. ||5||1||11|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਰੋਗੀ ਰੋਗੀ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥ manamukh dubidhaa sadaa hai rogee rogee sagal sansaaraa | The self-willed manmukh is afflicted with the disease of duality forever; the entire universe is diseased. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ guramukh boojheh rog gavaaveh gurasabadee veechaaraa |1| The Gurmukh understands, and is cured of the disease, contemplating the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮੇਲਾਇ ॥ har jeeo satasangat melaae | O Dear Lord, please let me join the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਜੋ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ naanak tis no dee vaddiaaee jo raam naam chit laae |1| rahaau | O Nanak, the Lord blesses with glorious greatness, those who focus their consciousness on the Lord’s Name. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਮਤਾ ਕਾਲਿ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗਿ ਵਿਆਪੇ ਤਿਨ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥ mamataa kaal sabh rog viaape tin jam kee hai sir kaaraa | Death takes all those who are afflicted with the disease of possessiveness. They are subject to the Messenger of Death. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ guramukh praanee jam nerr na aavai jin har raakhiaa ur dhaaraa |2| The Messenger of Death does not even approach that mortal who, as Gurmukh, enshrines the Lord within his heart. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੇ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥ jin har kaa naam na guramukh jaataa se jag meh kaahe aaeaa | One who does not know the Lord’s Name, and who does not become Gurmukh - why did he even come into the world? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਕੀਨੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ gur kee sevaa kade na keenee birathaa janam gavaaeaa |3| He never serves the Guru; he wastes his life uselessly. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥ naanak se poore vaddabhaagee satigur sevaa laae | O Nanak, those whom the True Guru enjoins to His service, have perfect good fortune. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੋ ਇਛਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੨॥ jo ichheh soee fal paaveh gurabaanee sukh paae |4|2|12| They obtain the fruits of their desires, and find peace in the Word of the Guru’s Bani. ||4||2||12|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੰਮੈ ਦੁਖਿ ਮਰੈ ਦੁਖ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ dukh vich jamai dukh marai dukh vich kaar kamaae | In pain he is born, in pain he dies, and in pain he does his deeds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਨਿਕਲੈ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ garabh jonee vich kade na nikalai bisattaa maeh samaae |1| He is never released from the womb of reincarnation; he rots away in manure. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥ dhrig dhrig manamukh janam gavaaeaa | Cursed, cursed is the self-willed manmukh, who wastes his life away. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ਨ ਕੀਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ poore gur kee sev na keenee har kaa naam na bhaaeaa |1| rahaau | He does not serve the Perfect Guru; he does not love the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਲਾਏ ॥ gur kaa sabad sabh rog gavaae jis no har jeeo laae | The Word of the Guru’s Shabad cures all diseases; he alone is attached to it, whom the Dear Lord attaches. - Guru Amardas Ji
