ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਚੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਰਾਈ ॥ saach rate sach amrit jihavaa mithiaa mail na raaee | Those who are imbued with Truth - their tongues are tinged with Truth; they do not have even an iota of the filth of falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥ niramal naam amrit ras chaakhiaa sabad rate pat paaee |3| They taste the sweet Ambrosial Nectar of the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; imbued with the Shabad, they are blessed with honor. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਣੀ ਗੁਣੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਲਾਹਾ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਾਈ ॥ gunee gunee mil laahaa paavas guramukh naam vaddaaee | The virtuous meet with the virtuous, and earn the profit; as Gurmukh, they obtain the glorious greatness of the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੪॥੫॥੬॥ sagale dookh mitteh gur sevaa naanak naam sakhaaee |4|5|6| All sorrows are erased, by serving the Guru; O Nanak, the Naam is our only Friend and Companion. ||4||5||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ bhairau mahalaa 1 | Bhairao, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਰਬ ਧਨੁ ਧਾਰਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ hiradai naam sarab dhan dhaaran gur parasaadee paaeeai | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the wealth and support of all; It is enshrined in the heart, by Guru’s Grace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਮਰ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਤੇ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥ ਸਹਜ ਧਿਆਨਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ amar padaarath te kirataarath sehaj dhiaan liv laaeeai |1| One who gathers this imperishable wealth is fulfilled, and through intuitive meditation, is lovingly focused on the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈਐ ॥ man re raam bhagat chit laaeeai | O mortal, focus your consciousness on devotional worship of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਹਜ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh raam naam jap hiradai sehaj setee ghar jaaeeai |1| rahaau | As Gurmukh, meditate on the Name of the Lord in your heart, and you shall return to your home with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਰਮੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਭਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਆਵਤ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਜਾਨੀ ॥ bharam bhed bhau kabahu na chhoottas aavat jaat na jaanee | Doubt, separation and fear are never eradicated, and the mortal continues coming and going in reincarnation, as long as he does not know the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਡੂਬਿ ਮੁਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਪਾਨੀ ॥੨॥ bin har naam ko mukat na paavas ddoob mue bin paanee |2| Without the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated; they drown and die without water. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਧੰਧਾ ਕਰਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਸਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਸਿ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ dhandhaa karat sagalee pat khovas bharam na mittas gavaaraa | Busy with his worldly affairs, all honor is lost; the ignorant one is not rid of his doubts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਧੰਧੁ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥੩॥ bin gurasabad mukat nahee kab hee andhule dhandh pasaaraa |3| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the mortal is never liberated; he remains blindly entangled in the expanse of worldly affairs. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਕੁਲ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮੂਆ ॥ akul niranjan siau man maaniaa man hee te man mooaa | My mind is pleased and appeased with the Immaculate Lord, who has no ancestry. Through the mind itself, the mind is subdued. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਆ ॥੪॥੬॥੭॥ antar baahar eko jaaniaa naanak avar na dooaa |4|6|7| Deep within my being, and outside as well, I know only the One Lord. O Nanak, there is no other at all. ||4||6||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਗਨ ਹੋਮ ਪੁੰਨ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਨਿਤ ਦੂਖ ਸਹੈ ॥ jagan hom pun tap poojaa deh dukhee nit dookh sahai | You may give feasts, make burnt offerings, donate to charity, perform austere penance and worship, and endure pain and suffering in the body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ॥੧॥ raam naam bin mukat na paavas mukat naam guramukh lahai |1| But without the Lord’s Name, liberation is not obtained. As Gurmukh, obtain the Naam and liberation. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥੇ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਾ ॥ raam naam bin birathe jag janamaa | Without the Lord’s Name, birth into the world is useless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਵੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਲੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਿਹਫਲੁ ਮਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bikh khaavai bikh bolee bolai bin naavai nihafal mar bhramanaa |1| rahaau | Without the Name, the mortal eats poison and speaks poisonous words; he dies fruitlessly, and wanders in reincarnation. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪੁਸਤਕ ਪਾਠ ਬਿਆਕਰਣ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੰਧਿਆ ਕਰਮ ਤਿਕਾਲ ਕਰੈ ॥ pusatak paatth biaakaran vakhaanai sandhiaa karam tikaal karai | The mortal may read scriptures, study grammar and say his prayers three times a day. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਉਰਝਿ ਮਰੈ ॥੨॥ bin gurasabad mukat kahaa praanee raam naam bin urajh marai |2| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, where is liberation, O mortal? Without the Lord’s Name, the mortal is entangled and dies. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਡੰਡ ਕਮੰਡਲ ਸਿਖਾ ਸੂਤੁ ਧੋਤੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਗਵਨੁ ਅਤਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਨੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ ddandd kamanddal sikhaa soot dhotee teerath gavan at bhraman karai | Walking sticks, begging bowls, hair tufts, sacred threads, loin cloths, pilgrimages to sacred shrines and wandering all around - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਰੈ ॥੩॥ raam naam bin saant na aavai jap har har naam su paar parai |3|

  • without the Lord’s Name, peace and tranquility are not obtained. One who chants the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, crosses over to the other side. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਟਾ ਮੁਕਟੁ ਤਨਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਈ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਗਨੁ ਭਇਆ ॥ jattaa mukatt tan bhasam lagaaee basatr chhodd tan nagan bheaa | The mortal’s hair may be matted and tangled upon his head, and he may smear his body with ashes; he may take off his clothes and go naked. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਕਿਰਤ ਕੈ ਬਾਂਧੈ ਭੇਖੁ ਭਇਆ ॥੪॥ raam naam bin tripat na aavai kirat kai baandhai bhekh bheaa |4| But without the Lord’s Name, he is not satisfied; he wears religious robes, but he is bound by the karma of the actions he committed in past lives. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਮਹੀਅਲਿ ਜਤ੍ਰ ਕਤ੍ਰ ਤੂ ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ॥ jete jeea jant jal thal maheeal jatr katr too sarab jeea | As many beings and creatures as there are in the water, on the land and in the sky - wherever they are, You are with them all, O Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਝੋਲਿ ਪੀਆ ॥੫॥੭॥੮॥ gur parasaad raakh le jan kau har ras naanak jhol peea |5|7|8| By Guru’s Grace, please preserve Your humble servant; O Lord, Nanak stirs up this juice, and drinks it in. ||5||7||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ jaat kaa garab na kareeahu koee | No one should be proud of his social class and status. - Guru Amardas Ji

ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਬਿੰਦੇ ਸੋ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ braham binde so braahaman hoee |1| He alone is a Brahmin, who knows God. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਜਾਤਿ ਕਾ ਗਰਬੁ ਨ ਕਰਿ ਮੂਰਖ ਗਵਾਰਾ ॥ jaat kaa garab na kar moorakh gavaaraa | Do not be proud of your social class and status, you ignorant fool! - Guru Amardas Ji
