ਮਃ ੫ ॥ mahalaa 5 | Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਖ ਸਮੂਹਾ ਭੋਗ ਭੂਮਿ ਸਬਾਈ ਕੋ ਧਣੀ ॥ sukh samoohaa bhog bhoom sabaaee ko dhanee | Even if one were to enjoy all pleasures, and be master of the entire earth, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਭੋ ਰੋਗੁ ਮਿਰਤਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣਿਆ ॥੨॥ naanak habho rog miratak naam vihooniaa |2| O Nanak, all of that is just a disease. Without the Naam, he is dead. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਹਿਕਸ ਕੂੰ ਤੂ ਆਹਿ ਪਛਾਣੂ ਭੀ ਹਿਕੁ ਕਰਿ ॥ hikas koon too aaeh pachhaanoo bhee hik kar | Yearn for the One Lord, and make Him your friend. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਸੜੀ ਨਿਬਾਹਿ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਪਰਥਾਈ ਲਜੀਵਦੋ ॥੩॥ naanak aasarree nibaeh maanukh parathaaee lajeevado |3| O Nanak, He alone fulfills your hopes; you should feel embarrassed, visiting other places. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਰਾਇਣੋ ਹਰਿ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਾ ॥ nihachal ek naraaeino har agam agaadhaa | The One and only Lord is eternal, imperishable, inaccessible and incomprehensible. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਧਾ ॥ nihachal naam nidhaan hai jis simarat har laadhaa | The treasure of the Naam is eternal and imperishable. Meditating in remembrance on Him, the Lord is attained. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵਾਧਾ ॥ nihachal keeratan gun gobind guramukh gaavaadhaa | The Kirtan of His Praises is eternal and imperishable; the Gurmukh sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਤਪੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਅਰਾਧਾ ॥ sach dharam tap nihachalo din rain araadhaa | Truth, righteousness, Dharma and intense meditation are eternal and imperishable. Day and night, worship the Lord in adoration. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਇਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਤਪੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੋ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਾਧਾ ॥ deaa dharam tap nihachalo jis karam likhaadhaa | Compassion, righteousness, Dharma and intense meditation are eternal and imperishable; they alone obtain these, who have such pre-ordained destiny. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਟਲੈ ਨ ਟਲਾਧਾ ॥ nihachal masatak lekh likhiaa so ttalai na ttalaadhaa | The inscription inscribed upon one’s forehead is eternal and imperishable; it cannot be avoided by avoidance. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਹਚਲ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਬਚਨ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਧਾ ॥ nihachal sangat saadh jan bachan nihachal gur saadhaa | The Congregation, the Company of the Holy, and the word of the humble, are eternal and imperishable. The Holy Guru is eternal and imperishable. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਆਰਾਧਾ ॥੧੯॥ jin kau poorab likhiaa tin sadaa sadaa aaraadhaa |19| Those who have such pre-ordained destiny worship and adore the Lord, forever and ever. ||19|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਲੋਕ ਡਖਣੇ ਮਃ ੫ ॥ salok ddakhane mahalaa 5 | Salok, Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਡੁਬੰਦੋ ਆਪਿ ਸੋ ਤਰਾਏ ਕਿਨੑ ਖੇ ॥ jo ddubando aap so taraae kina khe | One who himself has drowned - how can he carry anyone else across? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਾਰੇਦੜੋ ਭੀ ਤਾਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰ ਸਿਉ ਰਤਿਆ ॥੧॥ taaredarro bhee taar naanak pir siau ratiaa |1| One who is imbued with the Love of the Husband Lord - O Nanak, he himself is saved, and he saves others as well. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਥੈ ਕੋਇ ਕਥੰਨਿ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਣੰਦੋ ਮਾ ਪਿਰੀ ॥ jithai koe kathan naau sunando maa piree | Wherever someone speaks and hears the Name of my Beloved Lord, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੂੰ ਜੁਲਾਊਂ ਤਥਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰੀ ਪਸੰਦੋ ਹਰਿਓ ਥੀਓਸਿ ॥੨॥ moon julaaoon tath naanak piree pasando hario theeos |2| that is where I go, O Nanak, to see Him, and blossom forth in bliss. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸਨੇਹ ॥ meree meree kiaa kareh putr kalatr saneh | You are in love with your children and your wife; why do you keep calling them your own? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਹੂਣੀਆ ਨਿਮੁਣੀਆਦੀ ਦੇਹ ॥੩॥ naanak naam vihooneea nimuneeaadee deh |3| O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the human body has no foundation. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨੈਨੀ ਦੇਖਉ ਗੁਰ ਦਰਸਨੋ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਮਥਾ ॥ nainee dekhau gur darasano gur charanee mathaa | With my eyes, I gaze upon the Blessed Vision of the Guru’s Darshan; I touch my forehead to the Guru’s feet. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੈਰੀ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਲਦਾ ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਹਥਾ ॥ pairee maarag gur chaladaa pakhaa feree hathaa | With my feet I walk on the Guru’s Path; with my hands, I wave the fan over Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਪੰਥਾ ॥ akaal moorat ridai dhiaaeidaa din rain japanthaa | I meditate on Akaal Moorat, the undying form, within my heart; day and night, I meditate on Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੈ ਛਡਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਅਪਾਇਣੋ ਭਰਵਾਸੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਮਰਥਾ ॥ mai chhaddiaa sagal apaaeino bharavaasai gur samarathaa | I have renounced all possessiveness, and have placed my faith in the all-powerful Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਬਖਸਿਆ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸਭੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਥਾ ॥ gur bakhasiaa naam nidhaan sabho dukh lathaa | The Guru has blessed me with the treasure of the Naam; I am rid of all sufferings. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭੋਗਹੁ ਭੁੰਚਹੁ ਭਾਈਹੋ ਪਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਗਥਾ ॥ bhogahu bhunchahu bhaaeeho palai naam agathaa | Eat and enjoy the Naam, the Name of the indescribable Lord, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਿੜੁ ਸਦਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਥਾ ॥ naam daan isanaan dirr sadaa karahu gur kathaa | Confirm your faith in the Naam, charity and self-purification; chant the Guru’s sermon forever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਭਉ ਲਥਾ ॥੨੦॥ sehaj bheaa prabh paaeaa jam kaa bhau lathaa |20| Blessed with intuitive poise, I have found God; I am rid of the fear of the Messenger of Death. ||20|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਲੋਕ ਡਖਣੇ ਮਃ ੫ ॥ salok ddakhane mahalaa 5 | Salok, Dakhanay, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲਗੜੀਆ ਪਿਰੀਅੰਨਿ ਪੇਖੰਦੀਆ ਨਾ ਤਿਪੀਆ ॥ lagarreea pireean pekhandeea naa tipeea | I am centered and focused on my Beloved, but I am not satisfied, even by seeing Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਭ ਮਝਾਹੂ ਸੋ ਧਣੀ ਬਿਆ ਨ ਡਿਠੋ ਕੋਇ ॥੧॥ habh majhaahoo so dhanee biaa na ddittho koe |1| The Lord and Master is within all; I do not see any other. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕਥੜੀਆ ਸੰਤਾਹ ਤੇ ਸੁਖਾਊ ਪੰਧੀਆ ॥ katharreea santaah te sukhaaoo pandheea | The sayings of the Saints are the paths of peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਲਧੜੀਆ ਤਿੰਨਾਹ ਜਿਨਾ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਹੜੈ ॥੨॥ naanak ladharreea tinaah jinaa bhaag mathaaharrai |2| O Nanak, they alone obtain them, upon whose foreheads such destiny is written. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਡੂੰਗਰਿ ਜਲਾ ਥਲਾ ਭੂਮਿ ਬਨਾ ਫਲ ਕੰਦਰਾ ॥ ddoongar jalaa thalaa bhoom banaa fal kandaraa | He is totally permeating the mountains, oceans, deserts, lands, forests, orchards, caves, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਾਤਾਲਾ ਆਕਾਸ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਹਭ ਘਟਾ ॥ paataalaa aakaas pooran habh ghattaa | the nether regions of the underworld, the Akaashic ethers of the skies, and all hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਪੇਖਿ ਜੀਓ ਇਕਤੁ ਸੂਤਿ ਪਰੋਤੀਆ ॥੩॥ naanak pekh jeeo ikat soot paroteea |3| Nanak sees that they are all strung on the same thread. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਮਾਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਕ ॥ har jee maataa har jee pitaa har jeeo pratipaalak | The Dear Lord is my mother, the Dear Lord is my father; the Dear Lord cherishes and nurtures me. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇ ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਬਾਲਕ ॥ har jee meree saar kare ham har ke baalak | The Dear Lord takes care of me; I am the child of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਖਿਲਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਆਲਕ ॥ sahaje sehaj khilaaeidaa nahee karadaa aalak | Slowly and steadily, He feeds me; He never fails. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਉਗਣੁ ਕੋ ਨ ਚਿਤਾਰਦਾ ਗਲ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਾਇਕ ॥ aaugan ko na chitaaradaa gal setee laaeik | He does not remind me of my faults; He hugs me close in His embrace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੁਹਿ ਮੰਗਾਂ ਸੋਈ ਦੇਵਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਇਕ ॥ muhi mangaan soee devadaa har pitaa sukhadaaeik | Whatever I ask for, He give me; the Lord is my peace-giving father. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
