ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ਕਾਜੀ ॥ sach kamaavai soee kaajee | He alone is a Qazi, who practices the Truth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਦਿਲੁ ਸੋਧੈ ਸੋਈ ਹਾਜੀ ॥ jo dil sodhai soee haajee | He alone is a Haji, a pilgrim to Mecca, who purifies his heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਮੁਲਾ ਮਲਊਨ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਸੋ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਧਰਾ ॥੬॥ so mulaa mlaoon nivaarai so daraves jis sifat dharaa |6| He alone is a Mullah, who banishes evil; he alone is a saintly dervish, who takes the Support of the Lord’s Praise. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭੇ ਵਖਤ ਸਭੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਲਾ ॥ sabhe vakhat sabhe kar velaa | Always, at every moment, remember God, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਾਲਕੁ ਯਾਦਿ ਦਿਲੈ ਮਹਿ ਮਉਲਾ ॥ khaalak yaad dilai meh maulaa | The Creator within your heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਸਬੀ ਯਾਦਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਦਸ ਮਰਦਨੁ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਸੀਲੁ ਬੰਧਾਨਿ ਬਰਾ ॥੭॥ tasabee yaad karahu das maradan sunat seel bandhaan baraa |7| Let your meditation beads be the subjugation of the ten senses. Let good conduct and self-restraint be your circumcision. ||7|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਿਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਸਭ ਫਿਲਹਾਲਾ ॥ dil meh jaanahu sabh filahaalaa | You must know in your heart that everything is temporary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖਿਲਖਾਨਾ ਬਿਰਾਦਰ ਹਮੂ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥ khilakhaanaa biraadar hamoo janjaalaa | Family, household and siblings are all entanglements. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੀਰ ਮਲਕ ਉਮਰੇ ਫਾਨਾਇਆ ਏਕ ਮੁਕਾਮ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਦਰਾ ॥੮॥ meer malak umare faanaaeaa ek mukaam khudaae daraa |8| Kings, rulers and nobles are mortal and transitory; only God’s Gate is the permanent place. ||8|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਵਲਿ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਦੂਜੀ ਸਾਬੂਰੀ ॥ aval sifat doojee saabooree | First, is the Lord’s Praise; second, contentment; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੀਜੈ ਹਲੇਮੀ ਚਉਥੈ ਖੈਰੀ ॥ teejai halemee chauthai khairee | third, humility, and fourth, giving to charities. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੰਜਵੈ ਪੰਜੇ ਇਕਤੁ ਮੁਕਾਮੈ ਏਹਿ ਪੰਜਿ ਵਖਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਅਪਰਪਰਾ ॥੯॥ panjavai panje ikat mukaamai ehi panj vakhat tere aparaparaa |9| Fifth is to hold one’s desires in restraint. These are the five most sublime daily prayers. ||9|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਗਲੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਮਉਦੀਫਾ ॥ sagalee jaan karahu maudeefaa | Let your daily worship be the knowledge that God is everywhere. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਦ ਅਮਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਹਥਿ ਕੂਜਾ ॥ bad amal chhodd karahu hath koojaa | Let renunciation of evil actions be the water-jug you carry. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੁਦਾਇ ਏਕੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਬਾਂਗਾਂ ਬੁਰਗੂ ਬਰਖੁਰਦਾਰ ਖਰਾ ॥੧੦॥ khudaae ek bujh devahu baangaan buragoo barakhuradaar kharaa |10| Let realization of the One Lord God be your call to prayer; be a good child of God - let this be your trumpet. ||10|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਕੁ ਹਲਾਲੁ ਬਖੋਰਹੁ ਖਾਣਾ ॥ hak halaal bakhorahu khaanaa | Let what is earned righteously be your blessed food. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਿਲ ਦਰੀਆਉ ਧੋਵਹੁ ਮੈਲਾਣਾ ॥ dil dareeaau dhovahu mailaanaa | Wash away pollution with the river of your heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੀਰੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਭਿਸਤੀ ਸੋਈ ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਨ ਦੋਜ ਠਰਾ ॥੧੧॥ peer pachhaanai bhisatee soee ajaraaeel na doj ttharaa |11| One who realizes the Prophet attains heaven. Azraa-eel, the Messenger of Death, does not cast him into hell. ||11|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਿਰਦਾਰ ਅਉਰਤ ਯਕੀਨਾ ॥ kaaeaa kiradaar aaurat yakeenaa | Let good deeds be your body, and faith your bride. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੰਗ ਤਮਾਸੇ ਮਾਣਿ ਹਕੀਨਾ ॥ rang tamaase maan hakeenaa | Play and enjoy the Lord’s love and delight. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਪਾਕ ਪਾਕੁ ਕਰਿ ਹਦੂਰਿ ਹਦੀਸਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਸੂਰਤਿ ਦਸਤਾਰ ਸਿਰਾ ॥੧੨॥ naapaak paak kar hadoor hadeesaa saabat soorat dasataar siraa |12| Purify what is impure, and let the Lord’s Presence be your religious tradition. Let your total awareness be the turban on your head. ||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੁ ਮੋਮ ਦਿਲਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥ musalamaan mom dil hovai | To be Muslim is to be kind-hearted, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਮਲੁ ਦਿਲ ਤੇ ਧੋਵੈ ॥ antar kee mal dil te dhovai | and wash away pollution from within the heart. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੁਨੀਆ ਰੰਗ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਨੇੜੈ ਜਿਉ ਕੁਸਮ ਪਾਟੁ ਘਿਉ ਪਾਕੁ ਹਰਾ ॥੧੩॥ duneea rang na aavai nerrai jiau kusam paatt ghiau paak haraa |13| He does not even approach worldly pleasures; he is pure, like flowers, silk, ghee and the deer-skin. ||13|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਹਰ ਮਿਹਰ ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਾ ॥ jaa kau mihar mihar miharavaanaa | One who is blessed with the mercy and compassion of the Merciful Lord, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਈ ਮਰਦੁ ਮਰਦੁ ਮਰਦਾਨਾ ॥ soee marad marad maradaanaa | is the manliest man among men. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਈ ਸੇਖੁ ਮਸਾਇਕੁ ਹਾਜੀ ਸੋ ਬੰਦਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਜਰਿ ਨਰਾ ॥੧੪॥ soee sekh masaaeik haajee so bandaa jis najar naraa |14| He alone is a Shaykh, a preacher, a Haji, and he alone is God’s slave, who is blessed with God’s Grace. ||14|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਾਦਰ ਕਰਣ ਕਰੀਮਾ ॥ kudarat kaadar karan kareemaa | The Creator Lord has Creative Power; the Merciful Lord has Mercy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਅਥਾਹ ਰਹੀਮਾ ॥ sifat muhabat athaah raheemaa | The Praises and the Love of the Merciful Lord are unfathomable. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਕੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਖੁਦਾਇਆ ਬੁਝਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਬੰਦਿ ਖਲਾਸ ਤਰਾ ॥੧੫॥੩॥੧੨॥ hak hukam sach khudaaeaa bujh naanak band khalaas taraa |15|3|12| Realize the True Hukam, the Command of the Lord, O Nanak; you shall be released from bondage, and carried across. ||15||3||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਭ ਊਚ ਬਿਰਾਜੇ ॥ paarabraham sabh aooch biraaje | The Abode of the Supreme Lord God is above all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਸਾਜੇ ॥ aape thaap uthaape saaje | He Himself establishes, establishes and creates. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਗਹਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਛੁ ਭਉ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਬਾਲ ਕਾ ॥੧॥ prabh kee saran gehat sukh paaeeai kichh bhau na viaapai baal kaa |1| Holding tight to the Sanctuary of God, peace is found, and one is not afflicted by the fear of Maya. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗਰਭ ਅਗਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਹਿ ਉਬਾਰਿਆ ॥ garabh agan meh jineh ubaariaa | He saved you from the fire of the womb, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਕਤ ਕਿਰਮ ਮਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਆ ॥ rakat kiram meh nahee sanghaariaa | and did not destroy you, when you were an egg in your mother’s ovary. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪਨਾ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿਆ ਓਹੁ ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕਾ ਮਾਲਕਾ ॥੨॥ apanaa simaran de pratipaaliaa ohu sagal ghattaa kaa maalakaa |2| Blessing you with meditative remembrance upon Himself, He nurtured you and cherished you; He is the Master of all hearts. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਆਇਆ ॥ charan kamal saranaaee aaeaa | I have come to the Sanctuary of His lotus feet. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਇਆ ॥ saadhasang hai har jas gaaeaa | In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I sing the Praises of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਸਭਿ ਦੂਖ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭਉ ਨਹੀ ਕਾਲ ਕਾ ॥੩॥ janam maran sabh dookh nivaare jap har har bhau nahee kaal kaa |3| I have erased all the pains of birth and death; meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, I have no fear of death. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਮਰਥ ਅਕਥ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਦੇਵਾ ॥ samarath akath agochar devaa | God is all-powerful, indescribable, unfathomable and divine. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ jeea jant sabh taa kee sevaa | All beings and creatures serve Him. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਡਜ ਜੇਰਜ ਸੇਤਜ ਉਤਭੁਜ ਬਹੁ ਪਰਕਾਰੀ ਪਾਲਕਾ ॥੪॥ anddaj jeraj setaj utabhuj bahu parakaaree paalakaa |4| In so many ways, He cherishes those born from eggs, from the womb, from sweat and from the earth. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥ tiseh paraapat hoe nidhaanaa | He alone obtains this wealth, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਨਾ ॥ raam naam ras antar maanaa | who savors and enjoys, deep within his mind, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੇ ਅੰਧ ਕੂਪ ਤੇ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕੇਈ ਸਾਲਕਾ ॥੫॥ kar geh leene andh koop te virale keee saalakaa |5| Grasping hold of his arm, God lifts him up and pulls him out of the deep, dark pit. Such a devotee of the Lord is very rare. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
