ਮਿਰਤ ਲੋਕ ਪਇਆਲ ਸਮੀਪਤ ਅਸਥਿਰ ਥਾਨੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਹੈ ਅਭਗਾ ॥੧੨॥ mirat lok peaal sameepat asathir thaan jis hai abhagaa |12| He is near this world and the nether regions of the underworld; His Place is permanent, ever-stable and imperishable. ||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੈ ਭੰਜਨੁ ॥ patit paavan dukh bhai bhanjan | The Purifier of sinners, the Destroyer of pain and fear. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੁ ਹੈ ਭਵ ਖੰਡਨੁ ॥ ahankaar nivaaran hai bhav khanddan | The Eliminator of egotism, the Eradicator of coming and going. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਖਿਤ ਦੀਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲਾ ਗੁਣੇ ਨ ਕਿਤ ਹੀ ਹੈ ਭਿਗਾ ॥੧੩॥ bhagatee tokhit deen kripaalaa gune na kit hee hai bhigaa |13| He is pleased with devotional worship, and merciful to the meek; He cannot be appeased by any other qualities. ||13|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਅਛਲ ਅਡੋਲੋ ॥ nirankaar achhal addolo | The Formless Lord is undeceivable and unchanging. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਮਉਲੋ ॥ jot saroopee sabh jag maulo | He is the Embodiment of Light; through Him, the whole world blossoms forth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਆਪਹੁ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈਗਾ ॥੧੪॥ so milai jis aap milaae aapahu koe na paavaigaa |14| He alone unites with Him, whom He unites with Himself. No one can attain the Lord by himself. ||14|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਗੋਪੀ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਨਾ ॥ aape gopee aape kaanaa | He Himself is the milk-maid, and He Himself is Krishna. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਗਊ ਚਰਾਵੈ ਬਾਨਾ ॥ aape gaoo charaavai baanaa | He Himself grazes the cows in the forest. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਵਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਖਪਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਲੇਪੁ ਨਹੀ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੧੫॥ aap upaaveh aap khapaaveh tudh lep nahee ik til rangaa |15| You Yourself create, and You Yourself destroy. Not even a particle of filth attaches to You. ||15|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਜੀਹ ਗੁਣ ਕਵਨ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥ ek jeeh gun kavan bakhaanai | Which of Your Glorious Virtues can I chant with my one tongue? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਹਸ ਫਨੀ ਸੇਖ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਨੈ ॥ sehas fanee sekh ant na jaanai | Even the thousand-headed serpent does not know Your limit. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਵਤਨ ਨਾਮ ਜਪੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਇਕੁ ਗੁਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਹਿ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੧੬॥ navatan naam japai din raatee ik gun naahee prabh keh sangaa |16| One may chant new names for You day and night, but even so, O God, no one can describe even one of Your Glorious Virtues. ||16|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਤ ਸਰਣਾਇਆ ॥ ott gahee jagat pit saranaaeaa | I have grasped the Support, and entered the Sanctuary of the Lord, the Father of the world. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭੈ ਭਇਆਨਕ ਜਮਦੂਤ ਦੁਤਰ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥ bhai bheaanak jamadoot dutar hai maaeaa | The Messenger of Death is terrifying and horrendous, and sea of Maya is impassable. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਇਛਾ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਸਾਧ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੧੭॥ hohu kripaal ichhaa kar raakhahu saadh santan kai sang sangaa |17| Please be merciful, Lord, and save me, if it is Your Will; please lead me to join with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||17|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿਮਾਨ ਹੈ ਸਗਲ ਮਿਥੇਨਾ ॥ drisattimaan hai sagal mithenaa | All that is seen is an illusion. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਇਕੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਦਾਨੁ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਸੰਤ ਰੇਨਾ ॥ eik maagau daan gobid sant renaa | I beg for this one gift, for the dust of the feet of the Saints, O Lord of the Universe. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲਾਇ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਵਉ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈਗਾ ॥੧੮॥ masatak laae param pad paavau jis praapat so paavaigaa |18| Applying it to my forehead, I obtain the supreme status; he alone obtains it, unto whom You give it. ||18|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੀ ਸੁਖਦਾਤੇ ॥ jin kau kripaa karee sukhadaate | Those, unto whom the Lord, the Giver of peace, grants His Mercy, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਣ ਲੈ ਰਿਦੈ ਪਰਾਤੇ ॥ tin saadhoo charan lai ridai paraate | grasp the feet of the Holy, and weave them into their hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਗਲ ਨਾਮ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਤਿਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਮਨਿ ਵਾਜੰਗਾ ॥੧੯॥ sagal naam nidhaan tin paaeaa anahad sabad man vaajangaa |19| They obtain all the wealth of the Naam, the Name of the Lord; the unstruck sound current of the Shabad vibrates and resounds within their minds. ||19|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਿਰਤਮ ਨਾਮ ਕਥੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਜਿਹਬਾ ॥ kiratam naam kathe tere jihabaa | With my tongue I chant the Names given to You. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਪਰਾ ਪੂਰਬਲਾ ॥ sat naam teraa paraa poorabalaa | ‘Sat Naam’ is Your perfect, primal Name. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਭਗਤ ਪਏ ਸਰਣਾਈ ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਲਗਾ ॥੨੦॥ kahu naanak bhagat pe saranaaee dehu daras man rang lagaa |20| Says Nanak, Your devotees have entered Your Sanctuary. Please bestow the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; their minds are filled with love for You. ||20|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥ teree gat mit toohai jaaneh | You alone know Your state and extent. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੂ ਆਪੇ ਕਥਹਿ ਤੈ ਆਪਿ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ॥ too aape katheh tai aap vakhaaneh | You Yourself speak, and You Yourself describe it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੋ ਕਰੀਅਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਦਾਸਾ ਰਾਖੁ ਸੰਗਾ ॥੨੧॥੨॥੧੧॥ naanak daas daasan ko kareeahu har bhaavai daasaa raakh sangaa |21|2|11| Please make Nanak the slave of Your slaves, O Lord; as it pleases Your Will, please keep him with Your slaves. ||21||2||11|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅਲਹ ਅਗਮ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਬੰਦੇ ॥ alah agam khudaaee bande | O slave of the inaccessible Lord God Allah, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਛੋਡਿ ਖਿਆਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਕੇ ਧੰਧੇ ॥ chhodd khiaal duneea ke dhandhe | forsake thoughts of worldly entanglements. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਇ ਪੈ ਖਾਕ ਫਕੀਰ ਮੁਸਾਫਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਦਰਵੇਸੁ ਕਬੂਲੁ ਦਰਾ ॥੧॥ hoe pai khaak fakeer musaafar ihu daraves kabool daraa |1| Become the dust of the feet of the humble fakeers, and consider yourself a traveller on this journey. O saintly dervish, you shall be approved in the Court of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਨਿਵਾਜ ਯਕੀਨ ਮੁਸਲਾ ॥ sach nivaaj yakeen musalaa | Let Truth be your prayer, and faith your prayer-mat. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਹੁ ਆਸਾ ॥ manasaa maar nivaarihu aasaa | Subdue your desires, and overcome your hopes. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦੇਹ ਮਸੀਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਉਲਾਣਾ ਕਲਮ ਖੁਦਾਈ ਪਾਕੁ ਖਰਾ ॥੨॥ deh maseet man maulaanaa kalam khudaaee paak kharaa |2| Let your body be the mosque, and your mind the priest. Let true purity be God’s Word for you. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਰਾ ਸਰੀਅਤਿ ਲੇ ਕੰਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ saraa sareeat le kamaavahu | Let your practice be to live the spiritual life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਰੀਕਤਿ ਤਰਕ ਖੋਜਿ ਟੋਲਾਵਹੁ ॥ tareekat tarak khoj ttolaavahu | Let your spiritual cleansing be to renounce the world and seek God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਰਫਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਹੁ ਅਬਦਾਲਾ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਹਕੀਕਤਿ ਜਿਤੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਨ ਮਰਾ ॥੩॥ maarafat man maarahu abadaalaa milahu hakeekat jit fir na maraa |3| Let control of the mind be your spiritual wisdom, O holy man; meeting with God, you shall never die again. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੁਰਾਣੁ ਕਤੇਬ ਦਿਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਕਮਾਹੀ ॥ kuraan kateb dil maeh kamaahee | Practice within your heart the teachings of the Koran and the Bible; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਸ ਅਉਰਾਤ ਰਖਹੁ ਬਦ ਰਾਹੀ ॥ das aauraat rakhahu bad raahee | restrain the ten sensory organs from straying into evil. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਮਰਦ ਸਿਦਕਿ ਲੇ ਬਾਧਹੁ ਖੈਰਿ ਸਬੂਰੀ ਕਬੂਲ ਪਰਾ ॥੪॥ panch marad sidak le baadhahu khair sabooree kabool paraa |4| Tie up the five demons of desire with faith, charity and contentment, and you shall be acceptable. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਕਾ ਮਿਹਰ ਰੋਜਾ ਪੈ ਖਾਕਾ ॥ makaa mihar rojaa pai khaakaa | Let compassion be your Mecca, and the dust of the feet of the holy your fast. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਿਸਤੁ ਪੀਰ ਲਫਜ ਕਮਾਇ ਅੰਦਾਜਾ ॥ bhisat peer lafaj kamaae andaajaa | Let Paradise be your practice of the Prophet’s Word. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੂਰ ਨੂਰ ਮੁਸਕੁ ਖੁਦਾਇਆ ਬੰਦਗੀ ਅਲਹ ਆਲਾ ਹੁਜਰਾ ॥੫॥ hoor noor musak khudaaeaa bandagee alah aalaa hujaraa |5| God is the beauty, the light and the fragrance. Meditation on Allah is the secluded meditation chamber. ||5|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
