ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ poorai satigur sojhee paaee | The Perfect True Guru has imparted this understanding. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਈ ॥ eko naam man vasaaee | I have enshrined the Naam, the One Name, within my mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੀ ਤੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ naam japee tai naam dhiaaee mehal paae gun gaahaa he |11| I chant the Naam, and meditate on the Naam. Singing His Glorious Praises, I enter the Mansion of the Lord’s Presence. ||11|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ sevak seveh man hukam apaaraa | The servant serves, and obeys the Command of the Infinite Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸਾਰਾ ॥ manamukh hukam na jaaneh saaraa | The self-willed manmukhs do not know the value of the Lord’s Command. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ hukame mane hukame vaddiaaee hukame veparavaahaa he |12| By the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, one is exalted; by His Hukam, one is glorified; by His Hukam, one becomes carefree. ||12|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ gur parasaadee hukam pachhaanai | By Guru’s Grace, one recognizes the Lord’s Hukam. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਕਤੁ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥ dhaavat raakhai ikat ghar aanai | The wandering mind is restrained, and brought back to the home of the One Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ naame raataa sadaa bairaagee naam ratan man taahaa he |13| Imbued with the Naam, one remains forever detached; the jewel of the Naam rests within the mind. ||13|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥ sabh jag meh varatai eko soee | The One Lord is pervasive throughout all the world. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ॥ gur parasaadee paragatt hoee | By Guru’s Grace, He is revealed. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਸਲਾਹਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ sabad salaaheh se jan niramal nij ghar vaasaa taahaa he |14| Those humble beings who praise the Shabad are immaculate; they dwell within the home of their own inner self. ||14|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਭਗਤ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ sadaa bhagat teree saranaaee | The devotees abide forever in Your Sanctuary, Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਗਮ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥ agam agochar keemat nahee paaee | You are inaccessible and unfathomable; Your value cannot be estimated. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ jiau tudh bhaaveh tiau too raakheh guramukh naam dhiaahaa he |15| As it pleases Your Will, You keep us; the Gurmukh meditates on the Naam. ||15|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥ sadaa sadaa tere gun gaavaa | Forever and ever, I sing Your Glorious Praises. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੇ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਤੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਾ ॥ sache saahib terai man bhaavaa | O my True Lord and Master, may I become pleasing to Your Mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਸਚੁ ਦੇਵਹੁ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥੧੦॥ naanak saach kahai benantee sach devahu sach samaahaa he |16|1|10| Nanak offers this true prayer: O Lord, please bless me with Truth, that I may merge in the Truth. ||16||1||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਨਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥ satigur sevan se vaddabhaagee | Those who serve the True Guru are very fortunate. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥ anadin saach naam liv laagee | Night and day, they remain lovingly attuned to the True Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਰਵਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ sadaa sukhadaataa raviaa ghatt antar sabad sachai omaahaa he |1| The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever deep within their hearts; they delight in the True Word of the Shabad. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ nadar kare taa guroo milaae | When the Lord grants His Grace, one meets with the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥ har kaa naam man vasaae | The Name of the Lord is enshrined within the mind. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਬਦੇ ਮਨਿ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ har man vasiaa sadaa sukhadaataa sabade man omaahaa he |2| The Lord, the Giver of peace, abides forever within the mind; the mind is delighted with the Word of the Shabad. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ kripaa kare taa mel milaae | When the Lord bestows His Mercy, He unites in His Union. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਮਤਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ haumai mamataa sabad jalaae | Egotism and attachment are burned away by the Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਰਹੈ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ sadaa mukat rahai ik rangee naahee kisai naal kaahaa he |3| In the Love of the One Lord, one remains liberated forever; he is not in conflict with anyone. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਘੋਰ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥ bin satigur seve ghor andhaaraa | Without serving the True Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਪਾਰਾ ॥ bin sabadai koe na paavai paaraa | Without the Shabad, no one crosses over to the other side. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੋ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਲਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ jo sabad raate mahaa bairaagee so sach sabade laahaa he |4| Those who are imbued with the Shabad, are very detached. They earn the profit of the True Word of the Shabad. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥ dukh sukh karatai dhur likh paaeaa | Pain and pleasure are pre-ordained by the Creator. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਾਇਆ ॥ doojaa bhaau aap varataaeaa | He Himself has caused the love of duality to be pervasive. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਅਲਿਪਤੋ ਵਰਤੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਵੇਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ guramukh hovai su alipato varatai manamukh kaa kiaa vesaahaa he |5| One who becomes Gurmukh remains detached; how can anyone trust the self-willed manmukh? ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਜੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਪਛਾਣਹਿ ॥ se manamukh jo sabad na pachhaaneh | Those who do not recognize the Shabad are manmukhs. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਭੈ ਕੀ ਸਾਰ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ॥ gur ke bhai kee saar na jaaneh | They do not know the essence of the Fear of the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਉ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਜਮੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਲਏਗਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ bhai bin kiau nirbhau sach paaeeai jam kaadt legaa saahaa he |6| Without this Fear, how can anyone find the Fearless True Lord? The Messenger of Death will pull the breath out. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਫਰਿਓ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ afario jam maariaa na jaaee | The invulnerable Messenger of Death cannot be killed. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦੇ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਈ ॥ gur kai sabade nerr na aaee | The Word of the Guru’s Shabad prevents him from approaching. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣੇ ਤਾ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਭਾਗੈ ਮਤੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ sabad sune taa doorahu bhaagai mat maare har jeeo veparavaahaa he |7| When he hears the Word of the Shabad, he runs far away. He is afraid that the self-sufficient Dear Lord will kill him. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕੀ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ har jeeo kee hai sabh sirakaaraa | The Dear Lord is the Ruler above all. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਏਹੁ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾ ॥ ehu jam kiaa kare vichaaraa | What can this wretched Messenger of Death do? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹੁਕਮੀ ਬੰਦਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਕਢਦਾ ਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ hukamee bandaa hukam kamaavai hukame kadtadaa saahaa he |8| As slave to the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, the mortal acts according to His Hukam. According to His Hukam, he is deprived of his breath. ||8|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਕੀਆ ਅਕਾਰਾ ॥ guramukh saachai keea akaaraa | The Gurmukh realizes that the True Lord created the creation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥ guramukh pasariaa sabh paasaaraa | The Gurmukh knows that the Lord has expanded the entire expanse. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੋ ਸਚੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ guramukh hovai so sach boojhai sabad sachai sukh taahaa he |9| One who becomes Gurmukh, understands the True Lord. Through the True Word of the Shabad, he finds peace. ||9|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਕਰਮਿ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ॥ guramukh jaataa karam bidhaataa | The Gurmukh knows that the Lord is the Architect of karma. - Guru Amardas Ji
