ਏਕੋ ਅਮਰੁ ਏਕਾ ਪਤਿਸਾਹੀ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ eko amar ekaa patisaahee jug jug sir kaar banaaee he |1| There is only One Command, and there is only One Supreme King. In each and every age, He links each to their tasks. ||1|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ so jan niramal jin aap pachhaataa | That humble being is immaculate, who knows his own self. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਆਇ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ॥ aape aae miliaa sukhadaataa | The Lord, the Giver of peace, Himself comes and meets him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਰਸਨਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ rasanaa sabad ratee gun gaavai dar saachai pat paaee he |2| His tongue is imbued with the Shabad, and he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he is honored in the Court of the True Lord. ||2|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ guramukh naam milai vaddiaaee | The Gurmukh is blessed with the glorious greatness of the Naam. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਿੰਦਕਿ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ manamukh nindak pat gavaaee | The self-willed manmukh, the slanderer, loses his honor. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਹੰਸ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ naam rate param hans bairaagee nij ghar taarree laaee he |3| Attuned to the Naam, the supreme soul-swans remain detached; in the home of the self, they remain absorbed in deep meditative trance. ||3|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ sabad marai soee jan pooraa | That humble being who dies in the Shabad is perfect. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ satigur aakh sunaae sooraa | The brave, heroic True Guru chants and proclaims this. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਮਨੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਭਾਇ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ kaaeaa andar amrit sar saachaa man peevai bhaae subhaaee he |4| Deep within the body is the true pool of Ambrosial Nectar; the mind drinks it in with loving devotion. ||4|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਅਵਰਾ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥ parr panddit avaraa samajhaae | The Pandit, the religious scholar, reads and instructs others, - Guru Amardas Ji
ਘਰ ਜਲਤੇ ਕੀ ਖਬਰਿ ਨ ਪਾਏ ॥ ghar jalate kee khabar na paae | but he does not realize that his own home is on fire. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪੜਿ ਥਾਕੇ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਨ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ bin satigur seve naam na paaeeai parr thaake saant na aaee he |5| Without serving the True Guru, the Naam is not obtained. You can read until you are exhausted, but you shall not find peace and tranquility. ||5|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਭਸਮ ਲਗਾਇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥ eik bhasam lagaae fireh bhekhadhaaree | Some smear their bodies with ashes, and wander around in religious disguises. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਿਨਿ ਮਾਰੀ ॥ bin sabadai haumai kin maaree | Without the Word of the Shabad, who has ever subdued egotism? - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਲਤ ਰਹਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੇਖਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ anadin jalat raheh din raatee bharam bhekh bharamaaee he |6| Night and day, they continue burning, day and night; they are deluded and confused by their doubt and religious costumes. ||6|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਮਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥ eik grih kuttanb meh sadaa udaasee | Some, in the midst of their household and family, remain always unattached. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮੁਏ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ॥ sabad mue har naam nivaasee | They die in the Shabad, and dwell in the Lord’s Name. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਰਹਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਭੈ ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ anadin sadaa raheh rang raate bhai bhaae bhagat chit laaee he |7| Night and day, they remain forever attuned to His Love; they focus their consciousness on loving devotion and the Fear of God. ||7|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵਿਗੁਤਾ ॥ manamukh nindaa kar kar vigutaa | The self-willed manmukh indulges in slander, and is ruined. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਭਉਕੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਕੁਤਾ ॥ antar lobh bhaukai jis kutaa | The dog of greed barks within him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ jamakaal tis kade na chhoddai ant geaa pachhutaaee he |8| The Messenger of Death never leaves him, and in the end, he leaves, regretting and repenting. ||8|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚੀ ਪਤਿ ਹੋਈ ॥ sachai sabad sachee pat hoee | Through the True Word of the Shabad, true honor is obtained. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ bin naavai mukat na paavai koee | Without the Name, no one attains liberation. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਐਸੀ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ bin satigur ko naau na paae prabh aisee banat banaaee he |9| Without the True Guru, no one finds the Name. Such is the making which God has made. ||9|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ eik sidh saadhik bahut veechaaree | Some are Siddhas and seekers, and great contemplators. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥ eik ahinis naam rate nirankaaree | Some remain imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord, day and night. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ jis no aap milaae so boojhai bhagat bhaae bhau jaaee he |10| He alone understands, whom the Lord unites with Himself; through loving devotional worship, fear is dispelled. ||10|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝਹਿ ॥ eisanaan daan kareh nahee boojheh | Some take cleansing baths and give donations to charities, but they do not understand. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਇਕਿ ਮਨੂਆ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝਹਿ ॥ eik manooaa maar manai siau loojheh | Some struggle with their minds, and conquer and subdue their minds. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੰਗੀ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ saachai sabad rate ik rangee saachai sabad milaaee he |11| Some are imbued with love for the True Word of the Shabad; they merge with the True Shabad. ||11|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਜੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ aape siraje de vaddiaaee | He Himself creates and bestows glorious greatness. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਦੇਇ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥ aape bhaanai dee milaaee | By the Pleasure of His Will, He bestows union. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਇਉ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ aape nadar kare man vasiaa merai prabh iau furamaaee he |12| Bestowing His Grace, He comes to dwell in the mind; such is the Command ordained by my God. ||12|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ॥ satigur seveh se jan saache | Those humble beings who serve the True Guru are true. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੇਵਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਕਾਚੇ ॥ manamukh sev na jaanan kaache | The false, self-willed manmukhs do not know how to serve the Guru. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਜਿਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਉ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ aape karataa kar kar vekhai jiau bhaavai tiau laaee he |13| The Creator Himself creates the creation and watches over it; he attaches all according to the Pleasure of His Will. ||13|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ॥ jug jug saachaa eko daataa | In each and every age, the True Lord is the one and only Giver. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥ poorai bhaag gurasabad pachhaataa | Through perfect destiny, one realizes the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਵਿਛੁੜੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਦਰੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ sabad mile se vichhurre naahee nadaree sehaj milaaee he |14| Those who are immersed in the Shabad are not separated again. By His Grace, they are intuitively immersed in the Lord. ||14|| - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੈਲੁ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥ haumai maaeaa mail kamaaeaa | Acting in egotism, they are stained with the filth of Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ mar mar jameh doojaa bhaaeaa | They die and die again, only to be reborn in the love of duality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਮਨਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ bin satigur seve mukat na hoee man dekhahu liv laaee he |15| Without serving the True Guru, no one finds liberation. O mind, tune into this, and see. ||15|| - Guru Amardas Ji
