ਅਤਿ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ at ras meetthaa naam piaaraa | The sublime essence of the Beloved Naam is utterly sweet. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਉ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੫॥ naanak kau jug jug har jas deejai har japeeai ant na paaeaa |5| O Lord, please bless Nanak with Your Praise in each and every age; meditating on the Lord, I cannot find His limits. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੀਰਾ ॥ antar naam paraapat heeraa | With the Naam deep within the nucleus of the self, the jewel is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ har japate man man te dheeraa | Meditating on the Lord, the mind is comforted and consoled by the mind itself. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਘਟ ਘਟ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੬॥ dughatt ghatt bhau bhanjan paaeeai baahurr janam na jaaeaa |6| On that most difficult path, the Destroyer of fear is found, and one does not have to enter the womb of reincarnation again. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਿ ਹੇਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰੰਗਾ ॥ bhagat het gur sabad tarangaa | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, inspiration for loving devotional worship wells up. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਮੰਗਾ ॥ har jas naam padaarath mangaa | I beg for the treasure of the Naam, and the Lord’s Praise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੭॥ har bhaavai gur mel milaae har taare jagat sabaaeaa |7| When it pleases the Lord, He unites me in Union with the Guru; the Lord saves the whole world. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪੁ ਜਪਿਓ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਤਿ ਵਾ ਕੇ ॥ jin jap japio satigur mat vaa ke | One who chants the Lord’s Chant, attains the Wisdom of the True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਪਗ ਤਾ ਕੇ ॥ jamakankar kaal sevak pag taa ke | The tyrant, the Messenger of Death, becomes a servant at his feet. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਊਤਮ ਜਗੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਪਾਰਿ ਤਰਾਇਆ ॥੮॥ aootam sangat gat mit aootam jag bhaujal paar taraaeaa |8| In the noble congregation of the Sangat, one’s state and way of life become noble as well, and one crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਗੁਰ ਤਰੀਐ ॥ eihu bhavajal jagat sabad gur tareeai | Through the Shabad, one crosses over this terrifying world-ocean. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜਰੀਐ ॥ antar kee dubidhaa antar jareeai | The duality within is burnt away from within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਬਾਣ ਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੈ ਗਗਨੰਤਰਿ ਧਣਖੁ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥੯॥ panch baan le jam kau maarai gaganantar dhanakh charraaeaa |9| Taking up the five arrows of virtue, Death is killed, drawing the Bow of the Tenth Gate in the Mind’s Sky. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਿ ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਕਿਉ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ saakat nar sabad surat kiau paaeeai | How can the faithless cynics attain enlightened awareness of the Shabad? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਆਈਐ ਜਾਈਐ ॥ sabad surat bin aaeeai jaaeeai | Without awareness of the Shabad, they come and go in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੦॥ naanak guramukh mukat paraaein har poorai bhaag milaaeaa |10| O Nanak, the Gurmukh obtains the support of liberation; by perfect destiny, he meets the Lord. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਹੈ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ nirbhau satigur hai rakhavaalaa | The Fearless True Guru is our Savior and Protector. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਪਾਲਾ ॥ bhagat paraapat gur gopaalaa | Devotional worship is obtained through the Guru, the Lord of the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧੁਨਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੧॥ dhun anand anaahad vaajai gur sabad niranjan paaeaa |11| The blissful music of the unstruck sound current vibrates and resounds; through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, the Immaculate Lord is obtained. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਲੇਖਾ ॥ nirbhau so sir naahee lekhaa | He alone is fearless, who has no destiny written on His head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਹੈ ਦੇਖਾ ॥ aap alekh kudarat hai dekhaa | God Himself is unseen; He reveals Himself through His wondrous creative power. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਸੰਭਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੨॥ aap ateet ajonee sanbhau naanak guramat so paaeaa |12| He Himself is unattached, unborn and self-existent. O Nanak, through the Guru’s Teachings, He is found. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ antar kee gat satigur jaanai | The True Guru knows the state of one’s inner being. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ so nirbhau gur sabad pachhaanai | He alone is fearless, who realizes the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਅਨਤ ਨ ਮਨੁ ਡੋਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੩॥ antar dekh nirantar boojhai anat na man ddolaaeaa |13| He looks within his own inner being, and realizes the Lord within all; his mind does not waver at all. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸੋ ਅਭ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਸਿਆ ॥ nirbhau so abh antar vasiaa | He alone is fearless, within whose being the Lord abides. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਰਸਿਆ ॥ ahinis naam niranjan rasiaa | Day and night, he is delighted with the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹਰਿ ਸਹਜੇ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੧੪॥ naanak har jas sangat paaeeai har sahaje sehaj milaaeaa |14| O Nanak, in the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, the Lord’s Praise is obtained, and one easily, intuitively meets the Lord. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ antar baahar so prabh jaanai | One who knows God, within the self and beyond, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਹੈ ਅਲਿਪਤੁ ਚਲਤੇ ਘਰਿ ਆਣੈ ॥ rahai alipat chalate ghar aanai | remains detached, and brings his wandering mind back to its home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਊਪਰਿ ਆਦਿ ਸਰਬ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧੫॥੪॥੨੧॥ aoopar aad sarab tihu loee sach naanak amrit ras paaeaa |15|4|21| The True Primal Lord is over all the three worlds; O Nanak, His Ambrosial Nectar is obtained. ||15||4||21|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਕਰਨੈਹਾਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ kudarat karanaihaar apaaraa | The Creator Lord is infinite; His creative power is wondrous. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀਤੇ ਕਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਾਰਾ ॥ keete kaa naahee kihu chaaraa | Created beings have no power over Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਿਜਕੁ ਦੇ ਆਪੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ jeea upaae rijak de aape sir sir hukam chalaaeaa |1| He formed the living beings, and He Himself sustains them; the Hukam of His Command controls each and every one. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਚਲਾਇ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ॥ hukam chalaae rahiaa bharapoore | The all-pervading Lord orchestrates all through His Hukam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਸੁ ਨੇੜੈ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾਂ ਦੂਰੇ ॥ kis nerrai kis aakhaan doore | Who is near, and who is far away? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਪਤ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਹਰਿ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਤਾਕੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ gupat pragatt har ghatt ghatt dekhahu varatai taak sabaaeaa |2| Behold the Lord, both hidden and manifest, in each and every heart; the unique Lord is permeating all. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਮੇਲੇ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ jis kau mele surat samaae | One whom the Lord unites with Himself, merges in conscious awareness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ॥ gurasabadee har naam dhiaae | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, meditate on the Lord’s Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਅਨੂਪ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਭਰਮੁ ਜਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ aanad roop anoop agochar gur miliai bharam jaaeaa |3| God is the embodiment of bliss, incomparably beautiful and unfathomable; meeting with the Guru, doubt is dispelled. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਤੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ man tan dhan te naam piaaraa | The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is more dear to me than my mind, body and wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਿ ਸਖਾਈ ਚਲਣਵਾਰਾ ॥ ant sakhaaee chalanavaaraa | In the end, when I must depart, it shall be my only help and support. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
