ਵਰਨ ਭੇਖ ਨਹੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਖਤ੍ਰੀ ॥ varan bhekh nahee brahaman khatree | There were no castes or social classes, no religious robes, no Brahmin or Kh’shaatriya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੇਉ ਨ ਦੇਹੁਰਾ ਗਊ ਗਾਇਤ੍ਰੀ ॥ deo na dehuraa gaoo gaaeitree | There were no demi-gods or temples, no cows or Gaayatri prayer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੋਮ ਜਗ ਨਹੀ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਪੂਜਾ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ hom jag nahee teerath naavan naa ko poojaa laaeidaa |10| There were no burnt offerings, no ceremonial feasts, no cleansing rituals at sacred shrines of pilgrimage; no one worshipped in adoration. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੁਲਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਜੀ ॥ naa ko mulaa naa ko kaajee | There was no Mullah, there was no Qazi. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਸੇਖੁ ਮਸਾਇਕੁ ਹਾਜੀ ॥ naa ko sekh masaaeik haajee | There was no Shaykh, or pilgrims to Mecca. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਈਅਤਿ ਰਾਉ ਨ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹਣੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ reeat raau na haumai duneea naa ko kehan kahaaeidaa |11| There was no king or subjects, and no worldly egotism; no one spoke of himself. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਾਉ ਨ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ॥ bhaau na bhagatee naa siv sakatee | There was no love or devotion, no Shiva or Shakti - no energy or matter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਮੀਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਕਤੀ ॥ saajan meet bind nahee rakatee | There were no friends or companions, no semen or blood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਹੁ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਏਹੋ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ aape saahu aape vanajaaraa saache eho bhaaeidaa |12| He Himself is the banker, and He Himself is the merchant. Such is the Pleasure of the Will of the True Lord. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬ ਨ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ॥ bed kateb na sinmrit saasat | There were no Vedas, Korans or Bibles, no Simritees or Shaastras. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਾਠ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਉਦੈ ਨਹੀ ਆਸਤ ॥ paatth puraan udai nahee aasat | There was no recitation of the Puraanas, no sunrise or sunset. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ kahataa bakataa aap agochar aape alakh lakhaaeidaa |13| The Unfathomable Lord Himself was the speaker and the preacher; the unseen Lord Himself saw everything. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਤਾ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥ jaa tis bhaanaa taa jagat upaaeaa | When He so willed, He created the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਝੁ ਕਲਾ ਆਡਾਣੁ ਰਹਾਇਆ ॥ baajh kalaa aaddaan rahaaeaa | Without any supporting power, He sustained the universe. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ brahamaa bisan mahes upaae maaeaa mohu vadhaaeidaa |14| He created Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva; He fostered enticement and attachment to Maya. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਰਲੇ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ virale kau gur sabad sunaaeaa | How rare is that person who listens to the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥ kar kar dekhai hukam sabaaeaa | He created the creation, and watches over it; the Hukam of His Command is over all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਪਾਤਾਲ ਅਰੰਭੇ ਗੁਪਤਹੁ ਪਰਗਟੀ ਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ khandd brahamandd paataal aranbhe gupatahu paragattee aaeidaa |15| He formed the planets, solar systems and nether regions, and brought what was hidden to manifestation. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਕਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ taa kaa ant na jaanai koee | No one knows His limits. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ poore gur te sojhee hoee | This understanding comes from the Perfect Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤੇ ਬਿਸਮਾਦੀ ਬਿਸਮ ਭਏ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੩॥੧੫॥ naanak saach rate bisamaadee bisam bhe gun gaaeidaa |16|3|15| O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Truth are wonderstruck; singing His Glorious Praises, they are filled with wonder. ||16||3||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ aape aap upaae niraalaa | He Himself created the creation, remaining unattached. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚਾ ਥਾਨੁ ਕੀਓ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ saachaa thaan keeo deaalaa | The Merciful Lord has established His True Home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਬੰਧਨੁ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਰਚਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ paun paanee aganee kaa bandhan kaaeaa kott rachaaeidaa |1| Binding together air, water and fire, He created the fortress of the body. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ nau ghar thaape thaapanahaarai | The Creator established the nine gates. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਸਵੈ ਵਾਸਾ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੈ ॥ dasavai vaasaa alakh apaarai | In the Tenth Gate, is the dwelling of the infinite, unseen Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਇਰ ਸਪਤ ਭਰੇ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ saaeir sapat bhare jal niramal guramukh mail na laaeidaa |2| The seven seas are overflowing with the Ambrosial Water; the Gurmukhs are not stained with filth. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਬਾਈ ॥ rav sas deepak jot sabaaee | The lamps of the sun and the moon fill all with light. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ aape kar vekhai vaddiaaee | Creating them, He beholds His own glorious greatness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ jot saroop sadaa sukhadaataa sache sobhaa paaeidaa |3| The Giver of peace is forever the embodiment of Light; from the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੜ ਮਹਿ ਹਾਟ ਪਟਣ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥ garr meh haatt pattan vaapaaraa | Within the fortress are the stores and markets; the business is transacted there. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰੈ ਤੋਲਿ ਤੋਲੈ ਵਣਜਾਰਾ ॥ poorai tol tolai vanajaaraa | The Supreme Merchant weighs with the perfect weights. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਰਤਨੁ ਵਿਸਾਹੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ aape ratan visaahe levai aape keemat paaeidaa |4| He Himself buys the jewel, and He Himself appraises its value. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਵਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ keemat paaee paavanahaarai | The Appraiser appraises its value. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰੈ ॥ veparavaah poore bhanddaarai | The Independent Lord is overflowing with His treasures. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਲੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਹਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਬੁਝਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ sarab kalaa le aape rahiaa guramukh kisai bujhaaeidaa |5| He holds all powers, He is all-pervading; how few are those who, as Gurmukh, understand this. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ॥ nadar kare pooraa gur bhettai | When He bestows His Glance of Grace, one meets the Perfect Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਨ ਮਾਰੈ ਫੇਟੈ ॥ jam jandaar na maarai fettai | The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot strike him then. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਬਿਗਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਬਿਗਸਿ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ jiau jal antar kamal bigaasee aape bigas dhiaaeidaa |6| He blossoms forth like the lotus flower in the water; he blossoms forth in joyful meditation. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਵਰਖੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ aape varakhai amrit dhaaraa | He Himself rains down the Ambrosial Stream of jewels, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ ratan javehar laal apaaraa | Diamonds, and rubies of priceless value. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਪੂਰਾ ਪਾਈਐ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ satigur milai ta pooraa paaeeai prem padaarath paaeidaa |7| When they meet the True Guru, then they find the Perfect Lord; they obtain the treasure of Love. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਲਹੈ ਅਮੋਲੋ ॥ prem padaarath lahai amolo | Whoever receives the priceless treasure of Love - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਬ ਹੀ ਨ ਘਾਟਸਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਤੋਲੋ ॥ kab hee na ghaattas pooraa tolo |
- his weight never decreases; he has perfect weight. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੇ ਕਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਚੋ ਸਉਦਾ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ sache kaa vaapaaree hovai sacho saudaa paaeidaa |8| The trader of Truth becomes true, and obtains the merchandise. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ sachaa saudaa viralaa ko paae | How rare are those who obtain the true merchandise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ pooraa satigur milai milaae | Meeting the Perfect True Guru, one meets with the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
