ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥ ham daasan ke daas piaare | I am the slave of Your slaves, O my Beloved. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਾਚ ਭਲੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥ saadhik saach bhale veechaare | The seekers of Truth and goodness contemplate You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥ mane naau soee jin jaasee aape saach drirraaeidaa |10| Whoever believes in the Name, wins; He Himself implants Truth within. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥ palai saach sache sachiaaraa | The Truest of the True has the Truth is His lap. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ saache bhaavai sabad piaaraa | The True Lord is pleased with those who love the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਲਾ ਧਰਿ ਥਾਪੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਪਤੀਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥ tribhavan saach kalaa dhar thaapee saache hee pateeaeidaa |11| Exerting His power, the Lord has established Truth throughout the three worlds; with Truth He is pleased. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ vaddaa vaddaa aakhai sabh koee | Everyone calls Him the greatest of the great. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥ gur bin sojhee kinai na hoee | Without the Guru, no one understands Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਏ ਨਾ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥ saach milai so saache bhaae naa veechhurr dukh paaeidaa |12| The True Lord is pleased with those who merge in Truth; they are not separated again, and they do not suffer. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਧਾਹੀ ਰੁੰਨੇ ॥ dhurahu vichhune dhaahee rune | Separated from the Primal Lord, they loudly weep and wail. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਪੁੰਨੇ ॥ mar mar janameh muhalat pune | They die and die, only to be reborn, when their time has passed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥ jis bakhase tis de vaddiaaee mel na pachhotaaeidaa |13| He blesses those whom He forgives with glorious greatness; united with Him, they do not regret or repent. ||13 | - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ॥ aape karataa aape bhugataa | | He Himself is the Creator, and He Himself is the Enjoyer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥ aape tripataa aape mukataa | He Himself is satisfied, and He Himself is liberated. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਮੁਕਤੀਸਰੁ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥ aape mukat daan mukateesar mamataa mohu chukaaeidaa |14| The Lord of liberation Himself grants liberation; He eradicates possessiveness and attachment. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥ daanaa kai sir daan veechaaraa | I consider Your gifts to be the most wonderful gifts. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ karan kaaran samarath apaaraa | You are the Cause of causes, Almighty Infinite Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥ kar kar vekhai keetaa apanaa karanee kaar karaaeidaa |15| Creating the creation, You gaze upon what You have created; You cause all to do their deeds. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥ se gun gaaveh saache bhaaveh | They alone sing Your Glorious Praises, who are pleasing to You, O True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥ tujh te upajeh tujh maeh samaaveh | They issue forth from You, and merge again into You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੨॥੧੪॥ naanak saach kahai benantee mil saache sukh paaeidaa |16|2|14| Nanak offers this true prayer; meeting with the True Lord, peace is obtained. ||16||2||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅਰਬਦ ਨਰਬਦ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰਾ ॥ arabad narabad dhundhookaaraa | For endless eons, there was only utter darkness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਰਣਿ ਨ ਗਗਨਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥ dharan na gaganaa hukam apaaraa | There was no earth or sky; there was only the infinite Command of His Hukam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਨ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਸੁੰਨ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ naa din rain na chand na sooraj sun samaadh lagaaeidaa |1| There was no day or night, no moon or sun; God sat in primal, profound Samaadhi. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਣੀ ਨ ਬਾਣੀ ਪਉਣ ਨ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ khaanee na baanee paun na paanee | There were no sources of creation or powers of speech, no air or water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਪਤਿ ਖਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ opat khapat na aavan jaanee | There was no creation or destruction, no coming or going. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੰਡ ਪਤਾਲ ਸਪਤ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਗਰ ਨਦੀ ਨ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ khandd pataal sapat nahee saagar nadee na neer vahaaeidaa |2| There were no continents, nether regions, seven seas, rivers or flowing water. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥ naa tad surag machh peaalaa | There were no heavenly realms, earth or nether regions of the underworld. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੋਜਕੁ ਭਿਸਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਖੈ ਕਾਲਾ ॥ dojak bhisat nahee khai kaalaa | There was no heaven or hell, no death or time. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਰਕੁ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਨਹੀ ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਨ ਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ narak surag nahee jaman maranaa naa ko aae na jaaeidaa |3| There was no hell or heaven, no birth or death, no coming or going in reincarnation. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥ brahamaa bisan mahes na koee | There was no Brahma, Vishnu or Shiva. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥ avar na deesai eko soee | No one was seen, except the One Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਰਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਨ ਜਨਮਾ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ naar purakh nahee jaat na janamaa naa ko dukh sukh paaeidaa |4| There was no female or male, no social class or caste of birth; no one experienced pain or pleasure. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਬਨਵਾਸੀ ॥ naa tad jatee satee banavaasee | There were no people of celibacy or charity; no one lived in the forests. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸੁਖਵਾਸੀ ॥ naa tad sidh saadhik sukhavaasee | There were no Siddhas or seekers, no one living in peace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੰਗਮ ਭੇਖੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਥੁ ਕਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ jogee jangam bhekh na koee naa ko naath kahaaeidaa |5| There were no Yogis, no wandering pilgrims, no religious robes; no one called himself the master. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਨਾ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਪੂਜਾ ॥ jap tap sanjam naa brat poojaa | There was no chanting or meditation, no self-discipline, fasting or worship. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਦੂਜਾ ॥ naa ko aakh vakhaanai doojaa | No one spoke or talked in duality. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਆਪੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ aape aap upaae vigasai aape keemat paaeidaa |6| He created Himself, and rejoiced; He evaluates Himself. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਲਸੀ ਮਾਲਾ ॥ naa such sanjam tulasee maalaa | There was no purification, no self-restraint, no malas of basil seeds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੋਪੀ ਕਾਨੁ ਨ ਗਊ ਗੋੁਆਲਾ ॥ gopee kaan na gaoo guoaalaa | There were no Gopis, no Krishna, no cows or cowherds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੰਤੁ ਮੰਤੁ ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਵੰਸੁ ਵਜਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ tant mant paakhandd na koee naa ko vans vajaaeidaa |7| There were no tantras, no mantras and no hypocrisy; no one played the flute. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਖੀ ॥ karam dharam nahee maaeaa maakhee | There was no karma, no Dharma, no buzzing fly of Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਤਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੀਸੈ ਆਖੀ ॥ jaat janam nahee deesai aakhee | Social class and birth were not seen with any eyes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਮਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਾਥੈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਸੈ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ mamataa jaal kaal nahee maathai naa ko kisai dhiaaeidaa |8| There was no noose of attachment, no death inscribed upon the forehead; no one meditated on anything. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਜਿੰਦੋ ॥ nind bind nahee jeeo na jindo | There was no slander, no seed, no soul and no life. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਨਾ ਮਾਛਿੰਦੋ ॥ naa tad gorakh naa maachhindo | There was no Gorakh and no Maachhindra. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਦਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਕੁਲ ਓਪਤਿ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ naa tad giaan dhiaan kul opat naa ko ganat ganaaeidaa |9| There was no spiritual wisdom or meditation, no ancestry or creation, no reckoning of accounts. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
