ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੈ ॥ sabh ko bolai aapan bhaanai | Everyone speaks as they please. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਬੋਲਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥ manamukh doojai bol na jaanai | The self-willed manmukh, in duality, does not know how to speak. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਅੰਧਲੀ ਬੋਲੀ ਆਇ ਗਇਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਤਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ andhule kee mat andhalee bolee aae geaa dukh taahaa he |11| The blind person has a blind and deaf intellect; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਦੁਖ ਮਹਿ ਮਰਣਾ ॥ dukh meh janamai dukh meh maranaa | In pain he is born, and in pain he dies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਮਿਟੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥ dookh na mittai bin gur kee saranaa | His pain is not relieved, without seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੂਖੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਦੂਖੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ਕਿਆ ਲੈ ਜਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ dookhee upajai dookhee binasai kiaa lai aaeaa kiaa lai jaahaa he |12| In pain he is created, and in pain he perishes. What has he brought with himself? And what will he take away? ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੀ ਕਰਣੀ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਕਾਰਾ ॥ sachee karanee gur kee sirakaaraa | True are the actions of those who are under the Guru’s influence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮ ਧਾਰਾ ॥ aavan jaan nahee jam dhaaraa | They do not come and go in reincarnation, and they are not subject to the laws of Death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਡਾਲ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਤੁ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਰਾਤਾ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਓਮਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ ddaal chhodd tat mool paraataa man saachaa omaahaa he |13| Whoever abandons the branches, and clings to the true root, enjoys true ecstasy within his mind. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਨਹੀ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ॥ har ke log nahee jam maarai | Death cannot strike down the people of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੇਖਹਿ ਪੰਥਿ ਕਰਾਰੈ ॥ naa dukh dekheh panth karaarai | They do not see pain on the most difficult path. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਕਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ raam naam ghatt antar poojaa avar na doojaa kaahaa he |14| Deep within the nucleus of their hearts, they worship and adore the Lord’s Name; there is nothing else at all for them. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓੜੁ ਨ ਕਥਨੈ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਜਾਈ ॥ orr na kathanai sifat sajaaee | There is no end to the Lord’s sermon and Praise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ jiau tudh bhaaveh raheh rajaaee | As it pleases You, I remain under Your Will. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਜਾਨਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਚੇ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ daragah paidhe jaan suhele hukam sache paatisaahaa he |15| I am embellished with robes of honor in the Court of the Lord, by the Order of the True King. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਆ ਕਹੀਐ ਗੁਣ ਕਥਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ kiaa kaheeai gun katheh ghanere | How can I chant Your uncounted glories? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥ ant na paaveh vadde vaddere | Even the greatest of the great do not know Your limits. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਤਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਾਹਾ ਪਾਤਿਸਾਹਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੬॥੧੨॥ naanak saach milai pat raakhahu too sir saahaa paatisaahaa he |16|6|12| Please bless Nanak with the Truth, and preserve his honor; You are the supreme emperor above the heads of kings. ||16||6||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਨਗਰ ਗੜ ਅੰਦਰਿ ॥ kaaeaa nagar nagar garr andar | Deep within the body-village is the fortress. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚਾ ਵਾਸਾ ਪੁਰਿ ਗਗਨੰਦਰਿ ॥ saachaa vaasaa pur gaganandar | The dwelling of the True Lord is within the city of the Tenth Gate. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਾਇਲੁ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥ asathir thaan sadaa niramaaeil aape aap upaaeidaa |1| This place is permanent and forever immaculate. He Himself created it. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਛਜੇ ਹਟਨਾਲੇ ॥ andar kott chhaje hattanaale | Within the fortress are balconies and bazaars. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਲੇਵੈ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥ aape levai vasat samaale | He Himself takes care of His merchandise. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਜੜੇ ਜੜਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਖੋਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੨॥ bajar kapaatt jarre jarr jaanai gurasabadee kholaaeidaa |2| The hard and heavy doors of the Tenth Gate are closed and locked. Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they are thrown open. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੋਟ ਗੁਫਾ ਘਰ ਜਾਈ ॥ bheetar kott gufaa ghar jaaee | Within the fortress is the cave, the home of the self. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਉ ਘਰ ਥਾਪੇ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਰਜਾਈ ॥ nau ghar thaape hukam rajaaee | He established the nine gates of this house, by His Command and His Will. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਸਵੈ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਲੇਖੁ ਅਪਾਰੀ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥ dasavai purakh alekh apaaree aape alakh lakhaaeidaa |3| In the Tenth Gate, the Primal Lord, the unknowable and infinite dwells; the unseen Lord reveals Himself. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਇਕ ਵਾਸਾ ॥ paun paanee aganee ik vaasaa | Within the body of air, water and fire, the One Lord dwells. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕੀਤੋ ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ॥ aape keeto khel tamaasaa | He Himself stages His wondrous dramas and plays. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਲਦੀ ਜਲਿ ਨਿਵਰੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਜਲ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥ baladee jal nivarai kirapaa te aape jal nidh paaeidaa |4| By His Grace, water puts out the burning fire; He Himself stores it up in the watery ocean. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਰਤਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਧਰੀ ਧਰਮ ਸਾਲਾ ॥ dharat upaae dharee dharam saalaa | Creating the earth, He established it as the home of Dharma. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਾ ॥ autapat parlau aap niraalaa | Creating and destroying, He remains unattached. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਵਣੈ ਖੇਲੁ ਕੀਆ ਸਭ ਥਾਈ ਕਲਾ ਖਿੰਚਿ ਢਾਹਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥ pavanai khel keea sabh thaaee kalaa khinch dtaahaaeidaa |5| He stages the play of the breath everywhere. Withdrawing His power, He lets the beings crumble. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਾਰ ਅਠਾਰਹ ਮਾਲਣਿ ਤੇਰੀ ॥ bhaar atthaarah maalan teree | Your gardener is the vast vegetation of nature. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਰੁ ਢੁਲੈ ਪਵਣੈ ਲੈ ਫੇਰੀ ॥ chaur dtulai pavanai lai feree | The wind blowing around is the chauree, the fly-brush, waving over You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਦੀਪਕ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਸਿ ਘਰਿ ਸੂਰੁ ਸਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥ chand sooraj due deepak raakhe sas ghar soor samaaeidaa |6| The Lord placed the two lamps, the sun and the moon; the sun merges in the house of the moon. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਖੀ ਪੰਚ ਉਡਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਧਾਵਹਿ ॥ pankhee panch uddar nahee dhaaveh | The five birds do not fly wild. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਫਲਿਓ ਬਿਰਖੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ safalio birakh amrit fal paaveh | The tree of life is fruitful, bearing the fruit of Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਵੈ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥ guramukh sehaj ravai gun gaavai har ras chog chugaaeidaa |7| The Gurmukh intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord; he eats the food of the Lord’s sublime essence. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਝਿਲਮਿਲਿ ਝਿਲਕੈ ਚੰਦੁ ਨ ਤਾਰਾ ॥ jhilamil jhilakai chand na taaraa | The dazzling light glitters, although neither the moon nor the stars are shining; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਰਜ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਨ ਬਿਜੁਲਿ ਗੈਣਾਰਾ ॥ sooraj kiran na bijul gainaaraa | neither the sun’s rays nor the lightning flashes across the sky. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਕਥੀ ਕਥਉ ਚਿਹਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਪੂਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥ akathee kthau chihan nahee koee poor rahiaa man bhaaeidaa |8| I describe the indescribable state, which has no sign, where the all-pervading Lord is still pleasing to the mind. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਸਰੀ ਕਿਰਣਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਜਿਆਲਾ ॥ pasaree kiran jot ujiaalaa | The rays of Divine Light have spread out their brilliant radiance. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲਾ ॥ kar kar dekhai aap deaalaa | Having created the creation, the Merciful Lord Himself gazes upon it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਹਦ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸਦਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੯॥ anahad run jhunakaar sadaa dhun nirbhau kai ghar vaaeidaa |9| The sweet, melodious, unstruck sound current vibrates continuously in the home of the fearless Lord. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
