ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ raam naam saadhoo saranaaee | In the Sanctuary of the Holy, chant the Lord’s Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥ satigur bachanee gat mit paaee | Through the True Guru’s Teachings, one comes to know His state and extent. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਣਹਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੩॥੯॥ naanak har jap har man mere har mele melanahaaraa he |17|3|9| Nanak: chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, O my mind; the Lord, the Uniter, shall unite you with Himself. ||17||3||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘਰਿ ਰਹੁ ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੁਗਧ ਇਆਨੇ ॥ ghar rahu re man mugadh eaane | Remain in your own home, O my foolish and ignorant mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਅੰਤਰਗਤਿ ਧਿਆਨੇ ॥ raam japahu antaragat dhiaane | Meditate on the Lord - concentrate deep within your being and meditate on Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਾਲਚ ਛੋਡਿ ਰਚਹੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰਿ ਇਉ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ laalach chhodd rachahu aparanpar iau paavahu mukat duaaraa he |1| Renounce your greed, and merge with the infinite Lord. In this way, you shall find the door of liberation. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਣਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥ jis bisariai jam johan laagai | If you forget Him, the Messenger of Death will catch sight of you. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ਦੁਖਾ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਗੈ ॥ sabh sukh jaeh dukhaa fun aagai | All peace will be gone, and you will suffer in pain in the world hereafter. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ raam naam jap guramukh jeearre ehu param tat veechaaraa he |2| Chant the Name of the Lord as Gurmukh, O my soul; this is the supreme essence of contemplation. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ॥ har har naam japahu ras meetthaa | Chant the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, the sweetest essence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਡੀਠਾ ॥ guramukh har ras antar ddeetthaa | As Gurmukh, see the essence of the Lord deep within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਹਹੁ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਏਹੁ ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ ahinis raam rahahu rang raate ehu jap tap sanjam saaraa he |3| Day and night, remain imbued with the Lord’s Love. This is the essence of all chanting, deep meditation and self-discipline. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਬੋਲਹੁ ॥ raam naam gur bachanee bolahu | Speak the Guru’s Word, and the Name of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਮਹਿ ਇਹੁ ਰਸੁ ਟੋਲਹੁ ॥ sant sabhaa meh ihu ras ttolahu | In the Society of the Saints, search for this essence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਗਰਭ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ guramat khoj lahahu ghar apanaa bahurr na garabh majhaaraa he |4| Follow the Guru’s Teachings - seek and find the home of your own self, and you shall never be consigned to the womb of reincarnation again. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹੁ ॥ sach teerath naavahu har gun gaavahu | Bathe at the sacred shrine of Truth, and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਤੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਹੁ ॥ tat veechaarahu har liv laavahu | Reflect upon the essence of reality, and lovingly focus your consciousness on the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਾਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਬੋਲਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ ant kaal jam johi na saakai har bolahu raam piaaraa he |5| At the very last moment, the Messenger of Death will not be able to touch you, if you chant the Name of the Beloved Lord. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਡ ਦਾਣਾ ॥ satigur purakh daataa vadd daanaa | The True Guru, the Primal Being, the Great Giver, is all-knowing. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਣਾ ॥ jis antar saach su sabad samaanaa | Whoever has Truth within himself, merges in the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੂਕਾ ਜਮ ਭੈ ਭਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ jis kau satigur mel milaae tis chookaa jam bhai bhaaraa he |6| One whom the True Guru unites in Union, is rid of the overpowering fear of death. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਤਤੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀਨੀ ॥ panch tat mil kaaeaa keenee | The body is formed from the union of the five elements. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਲੈ ਚੀਨੀ ॥ tis meh raam ratan lai cheenee | Know that the Lord’s jewel is within it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਹੈ ਆਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ aatam raam raam hai aatam har paaeeai sabad veechaaraa he |7| The soul is the Lord, and the Lord is the soul; contemplating the Shabad, the Lord is found. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖਿ ਰਹਹੁ ਜਨ ਭਾਈ ॥ sat santokh rahahu jan bhaaee | Abide in truth and contentment, O humble Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਿਮਾ ਗਹਹੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥ khimaa gahahu satigur saranaaee | Hold tight to compassion and the Sanctuary of the True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਪਰਾਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ aatam cheen paraatam cheenahu gur sangat ihu nisataaraa he |8| Know your soul, and know the Supreme Soul; associating with the Guru, you shall be emancipated. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਕੂੜ ਕਪਟ ਮਹਿ ਟੇਕਾ ॥ saakat koorr kapatt meh ttekaa | The faithless cynics are stuck in falsehood and deceit. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਅਨੇਕਾ ॥ ahinis nindaa kareh anekaa | Day and night, they slander many others. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਿਮਰਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਭ ਜੋਨੀ ਨਰਕ ਮਝਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ bin simaran aaveh fun jaaveh grabh jonee narak majhaaraa he |9| Without meditative remembrance, they come and then go, and are cast into the hellish womb of reincarnation. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ॥ saakat jam kee kaan na chookai | The faithless cynic is not rid of his fear of death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਕਬਹੂ ਮੂਕੈ ॥ jam kaa ddandd na kabahoo mookai | The Messenger of Death’s club is never taken away. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਕੀ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਕੀ ਲੀਜੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ baakee dharam raae kee leejai sir afario bhaar afaaraa he |10| He has to answer to the Righteous Judge of Dharma for the account of his actions; the egotistical being carries the unbearable load. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕੋ ਤਰਿਆ ॥ bin gur saakat kahahu ko tariaa | Tell me: without the Guru, what faithless cynic has been saved? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤਾ ਭਵਜਲਿ ਪਰਿਆ ॥ haumai karataa bhavajal pariaa | Acting egotistically, he falls into the terrifying world-ocean. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ਹਰਿ ਜਪੀਐ ਪਾਰਿ ਉਤਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ bin gur paar na paavai koee har japeeai paar utaaraa he |11| Without the Guru, no one is saved; meditating on the Lord, they are carried across to the other side. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਦਾਤਿ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ gur kee daat na mettai koee | No one can erase the Guru’s blessings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਸੋਈ ॥ jis bakhase tis taare soee | The Lord carries across those whom He forgives. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਦੁਖੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ janam maran dukh nerr na aavai man so prabh apar apaaraa he |12| The pains of birth and death do not even approach those whose minds are filled with God, the infinite and endless. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਭੂਲੇ ਆਵਹੁ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥ gur te bhoole aavahu jaavahu | Those who forget the Guru come and go in reincarnation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਹੁ ਫੁਨਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਮਾਵਹੁ ॥ janam marahu fun paap kamaavahu | They are born, only to die again, and continue committing sins. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਕਤ ਮੂੜ ਅਚੇਤ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ saakat moorr achet na cheteh dukh laagai taa raam pukaaraa he |13| The unconscious, foolish, faithless cynic does not remember the Lord; but when he is stricken with pain, then he cries out for the Lord. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਖੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪੁਰਬ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ॥ sukh dukh purab janam ke kee | Pleasure and pain are the consequences of the actions of past lives. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਜਿਨਿ ਦਾਤੈ ਦੀਏ ॥ so jaanai jin daatai dee | The Giver, who blesses us with these - He alone knows. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਦੋਸੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਸਹੁ ਅਪਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ kis kau dos dehi too praanee sahu apanaa keea karaaraa he |14| So who can you blame, O mortal being? The hardships you suffer are from your own actions. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
