ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ satigur daataa mukat karaae | The True Guru, the Giver, grants liberation; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਰੋਗ ਗਵਾਏ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਪਾਏ ॥ sabh rog gavaae amrit ras paae | all diseases are eradicated, and one is blessed with the Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਮੁ ਜਾਗਾਤਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਗੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਠਰੁ ਸੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ jam jaagaat naahee kar laagai jis agan bujhee tthar seenaa he |5| Death, the tax collector, does not impose any tax on one whose inner fire has been put out, whose heart is cool and tranquil. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਹੰਸ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ kaaeaa hans preet bahu dhaaree | The body has developed a great love for the soul-swan. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਹੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਓਹ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ ohu jogee purakh oeh sundar naaree | He is a Yogi, and she is a beautiful woman. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭੋਗੈ ਚੋਜ ਬਿਨੋਦੀ ਉਠਿ ਚਲਤੈ ਮਤਾ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ ahinis bhogai choj binodee utth chalatai mataa na keenaa he |6| Day and night, he enjoys her with delight, and then he arises and departs without consulting her. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਇ ਰਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਛਾਜੈ ॥ srisatt upaae rahe prabh chhaajai | Creating the Universe, God remains diffused throughout it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉਣ ਪਾਣੀ ਬੈਸੰਤਰੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥ paun paanee baisantar gaajai | In the wind, water and fire, He vibrates and resounds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦੂਤ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ manooaa ddolai doot sangat mil so paae jo kichh keenaa he |7| The mind wavers, keeping company with evil passions; one obtains the rewards of his own actions. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੋਖ ਦੁਖ ਸਹੀਐ ॥ naam visaar dokh dukh saheeai | Forgetting the Naam, one suffers the misery of his evil ways. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਆ ਚਲਣਾ ਕਿਉ ਰਹੀਐ ॥ hukam bheaa chalanaa kiau raheeai | When the order to depart is issued, how can he remain here? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਰਕ ਕੂਪ ਮਹਿ ਗੋਤੇ ਖਾਵੈ ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਮੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ narak koop meh gote khaavai jiau jal te baahar meenaa he |8| He falls into the pit of hell, and suffers like a fish out of water. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਨਰਕ ਸਾਕਤੁ ਭੋਗਾਈਐ ॥ chauraaseeh narak saakat bhogaaeeai | The faithless cynic has to endure 8.4 million hellish incarnations. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੈਸਾ ਕੀਚੈ ਤੈਸੋ ਪਾਈਐ ॥ jaisaa keechai taiso paaeeai | As he acts, so does he suffer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਿਰਤਿ ਬਾਧਾ ਗ੍ਰਸਿ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ satigur baajhahu mukat na hoee kirat baadhaa gras deenaa he |9| Without the True Guru, there is no liberation. Bound and gagged by his own actions, he is helpless. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖੰਡੇ ਧਾਰ ਗਲੀ ਅਤਿ ਭੀੜੀ ॥ khandde dhaar galee at bheerree | This path is very narrow, like the sharp edge of a sword. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਤਿਲ ਜਿਉ ਪੀੜੀ ॥ lekhaa leejai til jiau peerree | When his account is read, he shall be crushed like the sesame seed in the mill. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਤ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ maat pitaa kalatr sut belee naahee bin har ras mukat na keenaa he |10| Mother, father, spouse and child - none is anyone’s friend in the end. Without the Lord’s Love, no one is liberated. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੀਤ ਸਖੇ ਕੇਤੇ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥ meet sakhe kete jag maahee | You may have many friends and companions in the world, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਕੋਈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ bin gur paramesar koee naahee | but without the Guru, the Transcendent Lord Incarnate, there is no one at all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਰਾਇਣਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ gur kee sevaa mukat paraaein anadin keeratan keenaa he |11| Service to the Guru is the way to liberation. Night and day, sing the Kirtan of the Lord’s Praises. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਕਉ ਧਾਵਹੁ ॥ koorr chhodd saache kau dhaavahu | Abandon falsehood, and pursue the Truth, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਇਛਹੁ ਸੋਈ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ॥ jo ichhahu soee fal paavahu | and you shall obtain the fruits of your desires. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚ ਵਖਰ ਕੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਲੈ ਲਾਹਾ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ saach vakhar ke vaapaaree virale lai laahaa saudaa keenaa he |12| Very few are those who trade in the merchandise of Truth. Those who deal in it, obtain the true profit. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੁ ॥ har har naam vakhar lai chalahu | Depart with the merchandise of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਹਲਹੁ ॥ darasan paavahu sehaj mahalahu | and you shall intuitively obtain the Blessed Vision of His Darshan, in the Mansion of His Presence. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਖੋਜਿ ਲਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਪੂਰੇ ਇਉ ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਚੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ guramukh khoj laheh jan poore iau samadarasee cheenaa he |13| The Gurmukhs search for Him and find Him; they are the perfect humble beings. In this way, they see Him, who looks upon all alike. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ prabh beant guramat ko paaveh | God is endless; following the Guru’s Teachings, some find Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨ ਕਉ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥ gur kai sabad man kau samajhaaveh | Through the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, they instruct their minds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਇਉ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੈ ਲੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ satigur kee baanee sat sat kar maanahu iau aatam raamai leenaa he |14| Accept as True, Perfectly True, the Word of the True Guru’s Bani. In this way, you shall merge in the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਸੇਵਕ ਤੇਰੇ ॥ naarad saarad sevak tere | Naarad and Saraswati are Your servants. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸੇਵਕ ਵਡਹੁ ਵਡੇਰੇ ॥ tribhavan sevak vaddahu vaddere | Your servants are the greatest of the great, throughout the three worlds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਕੁਦਰਤਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ sabh teree kudarat too sir sir daataa sabh tero kaaran keenaa he |15| Your creative power permeates all; You are the Great Giver of all. You created the whole creation. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਦਰਦੁ ਵਞਾਏ ॥ eik dar seveh darad vayaae | Some serve at Your Door, and their sufferings are dispelled. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਓਇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਛਡਾਏ ॥ oe daragah paidhe satiguroo chhaddaae | They are robed with honor in the Court of the Lord, and emancipated by the True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਤੋੜੇ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੰਚਲੁ ਚਲਣਿ ਨ ਦੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥ haumai bandhan satigur torre chit chanchal chalan na deenaa he |16| The True Guru breaks the bonds of egotism, and restrains the fickle consciousness. ||16|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਹੁ ਚੀਨਹੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਸਾਈ ॥ satigur milahu cheenahu bidh saaee | Meet the True Guru, and search for the way, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਤੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਗਣਤ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥ jit prabh paavahu ganat na kaaee | by which you may find God, and not have to answer for your account. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਭੀਨਾ ਹੇ ॥੧੭॥੨॥੮॥ haumai maar karahu gur sevaa jan naanak har rang bheenaa he |17|2|8| Subdue your egotism, and serve the Guru; O servant Nanak, you shall be drenched with the Lord’s Love. ||17||2||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਮਈਆ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥ ghatt ghatt rameea raam piaaraa | My Beloved Lord is pervading each and every heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਲੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਮੂਲੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲਿਖੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ naale alakh na lakheeai moole guramukh likh veechaaraa he |1| The unseen Lord is always with us, but He is not seen at all. The Gurmukh contemplates the record. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ guramukh saadhoo saran tumaaree | The Holy Gurmukh seeks Your Sanctuary. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
