ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਚੀਨੈ ਕੋਈ ॥ guramukh viralaa cheenai koee | Only a few, as Gurmukh, remembered the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੁਇ ਪਗ ਧਰਮੁ ਧਰੇ ਧਰਣੀਧਰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਤਿਥਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ due pag dharam dhare dharaneedhar guramukh saach tithaaee he |8| Dharmic faith, which upholds and supports the earth, had only two feet; Truth was revealed to the Gurmukhs. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਜੇ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਥਾਏ ॥ raaje dharam kareh parathaae | The kings acted righteously only out of self-interest. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸਾ ਬੰਧੇ ਦਾਨੁ ਕਰਾਏ ॥ aasaa bandhe daan karaae | Tied to hopes of reward, they gave to charities. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਥਾਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ raam naam bin mukat na hoee thaake karam kamaaee he |9| Without the Lord’s Name, liberation did not come, although they grew weary of performing rituals. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਰਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਮੰਗਾਹੀ ॥ karam dharam kar mukat mangaahee | Practicing religious rituals, they sought liberation, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਲਾਹੀ ॥ mukat padaarath sabad salaahee | but the treasure of liberation comes only by praising the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੈ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਭਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ bin gurasabadai mukat na hoee parapanch kar bharamaaee he |10| Without the Word of the Guru’s Shabad, liberation is not obtained; practicing hypocrisy, they wander around confused. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਮਤਾ ਛੋਡੀ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ maaeaa mamataa chhoddee na jaaee | Love and attachment to Maya cannot be abandoned. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇ ਛੂਟੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ॥ se chhootte sach kaar kamaaee | They alone find release, who practice deeds of Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ ahinis bhagat rate veechaaree tthaakur siau ban aaee he |11| Day and night, the devotees remain imbued with contemplative meditation; they become just like their Lord and Master. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥ eik jap tap kar kar teerath naaveh | Some chant and practice intensive meditation, and take cleansing baths at sacred shrines of pilgrimage. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਿਵੈ ਚਲਾਵਹਿ ॥ jiau tudh bhaavai tivai chalaaveh | They walk as You will them to walk. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਅਪਤੀਜੁ ਨ ਭੀਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਨਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ hatth nigreh apateej na bheejai bin har gur kin pat paaee he |12| By stubborn rituals of self-suppression, the Lord is not pleased. No one has ever obtained honor, without the Lord, without the Guru. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਲੀ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਰਾਖੀ ॥ kalee kaal meh ik kal raakhee | In the Iron Age, the Dark Age of Kali Yuga, only one power remains. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਭਾਖੀ ॥ bin gur poore kinai na bhaakhee | Without the Perfect Guru, no one has even described it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕੂੜੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਵਰਤਾਰਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ manamukh koorr varatai varataaraa bin satigur bharam na jaaee he |13| The self-willed manmukhs have staged the show of falsehood. Without the True Guru, doubt does not depart. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਿਰੰਦਾ ॥ satigur veparavaahu sirandaa | The True Guru is the Creator Lord, independent and carefree. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਜਮ ਕਾਣਿ ਨ ਛੰਦਾ ਬੰਦਾ ॥ naa jam kaan na chhandaa bandaa | He does not fear death, and He is not dependent on mortal men. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ jo tis seve so abinaasee naa tis kaal santaaee he |14| Whoever serves Him becomes immortal and imperishable, and will not be tortured by death. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਮਹਿ ਆਪੁ ਰਖਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰੇ ॥ gur meh aap rakhiaa karataare | The Creator Lord has enshrined Himself within the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੰਖ ਉਧਾਰੇ ॥ guramukh kott asankh udhaare | The Gurmukh saves countless millions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਜੀਵਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ sarab jeea jagajeevan daataa nirbhau mail na kaaee he |15| The Life of the World is the Great Giver of all beings. The Fearless Lord has no filth at all. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲੇ ਜਾਚਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਭੰਡਾਰੀ ॥ sagale jaacheh gur bhanddaaree | Everyone begs from the Guru, God’s Treasurer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰੀ ॥ aap niranjan alakh apaaree | He Himself is the immaculate, unknowable, infinite Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੪॥ naanak saach kahai prabh jaachai mai deejai saach rajaaee he |16|4| Nanak speaks the Truth; he begs from God. Please bless me with the Truth, by Your Will. ||16||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੈ ਮੇਲੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥ saachai mele sabad milaae | The True Lord unites with those who are united with the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਏ ॥ jaa tis bhaanaa sehaj samaae | When it pleases Him, we intuitively merge with Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੀ ਪਰਮੇਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ tribhavan jot dharee paramesar avar na doojaa bhaaee he |1| The Light of the Transcendent Lord pervades the three worlds; there is no other at all, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥ jis ke chaakar tis kee sevaa | I am His servant; I serve Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਜੈ ਅਲਖ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥ sabad pateejai alakh abhevaa | He is unknowable and mysterious; He is pleased by the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਗੁਣਕਾਰੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ bhagataa kaa gunakaaree karataa bakhas le vaddiaaee he |2| The Creator is the Benefactor of His devotees. He forgives them - such is His greatness. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦੇਦੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਸਾਚੇ ॥ dede tott na aavai saache | The True Lord gives and gives; His blessings never run short. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੈ ਲੈ ਮੁਕਰਿ ਪਉਦੇ ਕਾਚੇ ॥ lai lai mukar paude kaache | The false ones receive, and then deny having received. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂਲੁ ਨ ਬੂਝਹਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਨ ਰੀਝਹਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ mool na boojheh saach na reejheh doojai bharam bhulaaee he |3| They do not understand their origins, they are not pleased with the Truth, and so they wander in duality and doubt. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ guramukh jaag rahe din raatee | The Gurmukhs remain awake and aware, day and night. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਲਿਵ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਜਾਤੀ ॥ saache kee liv guramat jaatee | Following the Guru’s Teachings, they know the Love of the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਸੋਇ ਰਹੇ ਸੇ ਲੂਟੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ manamukh soe rahe se lootte guramukh saabat bhaaee he |4| The self-willed manmukhs remain asleep, and are plundered. The Gurmukhs remain safe and sound, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੇ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੇ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ koorre aavai koorre jaavai | The false come, and the false go; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜੇ ਰਾਤੀ ਕੂੜੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ koorre raatee koorr kamaavai | imbued with falsehood, they practice only falsehood. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ sabad mile se daragah paidhe guramukh surat samaaee he |5| Those who are imbued with the Shabad are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; the Gurmukhs focus their consciousness on Him. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੂੜਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਠਗੀ ਠਗਵਾੜੀ ॥ koorr mutthee tthagee tthagavaarree | The false are cheated, and robbed by the robbers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਵਾੜੀ ਓਜਾੜਿ ਉਜਾੜੀ ॥ jiau vaarree ojaarr ujaarree | The garden is laid waste, like the rough wilderness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਾਦਿ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ naam binaa kichh saad na laagai har bisariai dukh paaee he |6| Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, nothing tastes sweet; forgetting the Lord, they suffer in sorrow. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਆਘਾਈ ॥ bhojan saach milai aaghaaee | Receiving the food of Truth, one is satisfied. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਾਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ naam ratan saachee vaddiaaee | True is the glorious greatness of the jewel of the Name. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੀਨੈ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ cheenai aap pachhaanai soee jotee jot milaaee he |7| One who understands his own self, realizes the Lord. His light merges into the Light. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
