ਸਚੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਅਵਰ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ sachai aoopar avar na deesai saache keemat paaee he |8| I cannot see any other above the True Lord. The True Lord does the appraisal. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਐਥੈ ਗੋਇਲੜਾ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰੇ ॥ aithai goeilarraa din chaare | In this green pasture, the mortal stays only a few days. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੇਲੁ ਤਮਾਸਾ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੇ ॥ khel tamaasaa dhundhookaare | He plays and frolics in utter darkness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਜੀ ਖੇਲਿ ਗਏ ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਜਿਉ ਨਿਸਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਭਖਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ baajee khel ge baajeegar jiau nis supanai bhakhalaaee he |9| The jugglers have staged their show, and left, like people mumbling in a dream. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਤਖਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ tin kau takhat milee vaddiaaee | They alone are blessed with glorious greatness at the Lord’s throne, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ nirbhau man vasiaa liv laaee | who enshrine the fearless Lord in their minds, and lovingly center themselves on Him. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਖੰਡੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡੀ ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਪੁਰੀਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ khanddee brahamanddee paataalee pureeee tribhavan taarree laaee he |10| In the galaxies and solar systems, nether regions, celestial realms and the three worlds, the Lord is in the primal void of deep absorption. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੀ ਨਗਰੀ ਤਖਤੁ ਸਚਾਵਾ ॥ saachee nagaree takhat sachaavaa | True is the village, and true is the throne, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥ guramukh saach milai sukh paavaa | of those Gurmukhs who meet with the True Lord, and find peace. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਣਤ ਗਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ saache saachai takhat vaddaaee haumai ganat gavaaee he |11| In Truth, seated upon the true throne, they are blessed with glorious greatness; their egotism is eradicated, along with the calculation of their account. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਜੀਐ ॥ ganat ganeeai sahasaa jeeai | Calculating its account, the soul becomes anxious. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਦੂਐ ਤੀਐ ॥ kiau sukh paavai dooai teeai | How can one find peace, through duality and the three gunas - the three qualities? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਤੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ niramal ek niranjan daataa gur poore te pat paaee he |12| The One Lord is immaculate and formless, the Great Giver; through the Perfect Guru, honor is obtained. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ jug jug viralee guramukh jaataa | In each and every age, very rare are those who, as Gurmukh, realize the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ saachaa rav rahiaa man raataa | Their minds are imbued with the True, all-pervading Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ tis kee ott gahee sukh paaeaa man tan mail na kaaee he |13| Seeking His Shelter, they find peace, and their minds and bodies are not stained with filth. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜੀਭ ਰਸਾਇਣਿ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ jeebh rasaaein saachai raatee | Their tongues are imbued with the True Lord, the source of nectar; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੰਗੀ ਭਉ ਨ ਭਰਾਤੀ ॥ har prabh sangee bhau na bharaatee | abiding with the Lord God, they have no fear or doubt. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਸ੍ਰੋਤ ਰਜੇ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ sravan srot raje gurabaanee jotee jot milaaee he |14| Hearing the Word of the Guru’s Bani, their ears are satisfied, and their light merges into the Light. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਰਖਿ ਰਖਿ ਪੈਰ ਧਰੇ ਪਉ ਧਰਣਾ ॥ rakh rakh pair dhare pau dharanaa | Carefully, carefully, I place my feet upon the ground. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾ ॥ jat kat dekhau teree saranaa | Wherever I go, I behold Your Sanctuary. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਤੂਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਸਿਉ ਬਣਿ ਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ dukh sukh dehi toohai man bhaaveh tujh hee siau ban aaee he |15| Whether You grant me pain or pleasure, You are pleasing to my mind. I am in harmony with You. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਕੋ ਬੇਲੀ ਨਾਹੀ ॥ ant kaal ko belee naahee | No one is anyone’s companion or helper at the very last moment; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥ guramukh jaataa tudh saalaahee | as Gurmukh, I realize You and praise You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੩॥ naanak naam rate bairaagee nij ghar taarree laaee he |16|3| O Nanak, imbued with the Naam, I am detached; in the home of my own self deep within, I am absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||16||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ maaroo mahalaa 1 | Maaroo, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦੀ ਅਪਰ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥ aad jugaadee apar apaare | From the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You are infinite and incomparable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਆਦਿ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ aad niranjan khasam hamaare | You are my primal, immaculate Lord and Master. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੇ ਜੋਗ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ saache jog jugat veechaaree saache taarree laaee he |1| I contemplate the Way of Yoga, the Way of Union with the True Lord. I am truly absorbed in the primal void of deep meditation. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕੇਤੜਿਆ ਜੁਗ ਧੁੰਧੂਕਾਰੈ ॥ ketarriaa jug dhundhookaarai | For so many ages, there was only pitch darkness; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੈ ॥ taarree laaee sirajanahaarai | the Creator Lord was absorbed in the primal void. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਾਚੈ ਤਖਤਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ sach naam sachee vaddiaaee saachai takhat vaddaaee he |2| There was the True Name, the glorious greatness of the Truth, and the glory of His true throne. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥ satajug sat santokh sareeraa | In the Golden Age of Truth, Truth and contentment filled the bodies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਿ ਸਤਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰਾ ॥ sat sat varatai gahir ganbheeraa | Truth was pervasive, Truth, deep, profound and unfathomable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਖੈ ਸਾਚੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਚਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ sachaa saahib sach parakhai saachai hukam chalaaee he |3| The True Lord appraises the mortals on the Touchstone of Truth, and issues His True Command. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ sat santokhee satigur pooraa | The Perfect True Guru is true and contented. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਮਨੇ ਸੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥ gur kaa sabad mane so sooraa | He alone is a spiritual hero, who believes in the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੀ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਾਚੁ ਨਿਵਾਸਾ ਮਾਨੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਰਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ saachee daragah saach nivaasaa maanai hukam rajaaee he |4| He alone obtains a true seat in the True Court of the Lord, who surrenders to the Command of the Commander. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥ satajug saach kahai sabh koee | In the Golden Age of Truth, everyone spoke the Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਚਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਈ ॥ sach varatai saachaa soee | Truth was pervasive - the Lord was Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਭਰਮ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ man mukh saach bharam bhau bhanjan guramukh saach sakhaaee he |5| With Truth in their minds and mouths, mortals were rid of doubt and fear. Truth was the friend of the Gurmukhs. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਧਰਮ ਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਚੂਕੀ ॥ tretai dharam kalaa ik chookee | In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yoga, one power of Dharma was lost. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਤੀਨਿ ਚਰਣ ਇਕ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਸੂਕੀ ॥ teen charan ik dubidhaa sookee | Three feet remained; through duality, one was cut off. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਅਵਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ guramukh hovai su saach vakhaanai manamukh pachai avaaee he |6| Those who were Gurmukh spoke the Truth, while the self-willed manmukhs wasted away in vain. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਦਰਗਹ ਸੀਝੈ ॥ manamukh kade na daragah seejhai | The manmukh never succeeds in the Court of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਕਿਉ ਅੰਤਰੁ ਰੀਝੈ ॥ bin sabadai kiau antar reejhai | Without the Word of the Shabad, how can one be pleased within? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਾਧੇ ਆਵਹਿ ਬਾਧੇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਬੂਝ ਨ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ baadhe aaveh baadhe jaaveh sojhee boojh na kaaee he |7| In bondage they come, and in bondage they go; they understand and comprehend nothing. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਦਇਆ ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਅਧੀ ਹੋਈ ॥ deaa duaapur adhee hoee | In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, compassion was cut in half. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
