ਆਪੇ ਕਿਸ ਹੀ ਕਸਿ ਬਖਸੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਲੈ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ aape kis hee kas bakhase aape de lai bhaaee he |8| You Yourself test and forgive. You Yourself give and take, O Siblings of Destiny. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਧਨਖੁ ਆਪੇ ਸਰਬਾਣਾ ॥ aape dhanakh aape sarabaanaa | He Himself is the bow, and He Himself is the archer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਸਿਆਣਾ ॥ aape sugharr saroop siaanaa | He Himself is all-wise, beautiful and all-knowing. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਣਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਆਪੇ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੯॥ kahataa bakataa sunataa soee aape banat banaaee he |9| He is the speaker, the orator and the listener. He Himself made what is made. ||9|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਉਣੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਣੀ ਪਿਤ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ paun guroo paanee pit jaataa | Air is the Guru, and water is known to be the father. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਉਦਰ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਧਰਤੀ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ audar sanjogee dharatee maataa | The womb of the great mother earth gives birth to all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਦੁਇ ਦਾਈ ਦਾਇਆ ਜਗੁ ਖੇਲੈ ਖੇਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੦॥ rain dinas due daaee daaeaa jag khelai khelaaee he |10| Night and day are the two nurses, male and female; the world plays in this play. ||10|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਲਾ ॥ aape machhulee aape jaalaa | You Yourself are the fish, and You Yourself are the net. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਗਊ ਆਪੇ ਰਖਵਾਲਾ ॥ aape gaoo aape rakhavaalaa | You Yourself are the cows, and You yourself are their keeper. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਜੀਆ ਜਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੧॥ sarab jeea jag jot tumaaree jaisee prabh furamaaee he |11| Your Light fills all the beings of the world; they walk according to Your Command, O God. ||11|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਜੋਗੀ ਆਪੇ ਭੋਗੀ ॥ aape jogee aape bhogee | You Yourself are the Yogi, and You Yourself are the enjoyer. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਰਸੀਆ ਪਰਮ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ॥ aape raseea param sanjogee | You Yourself are the reveller; You form the supreme Union. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਵੇਬਾਣੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੨॥ aape vebaanee nirankaaree nirbhau taarree laaee he |12| You Yourself are speechless, formless and fearless, absorbed in the primal ecstasy of deep meditation. ||12|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਤੁਝਹਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥ khaanee baanee tujheh samaanee | The sources of creation and speech are contained within You, Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸਭ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੀ ॥ jo deesai sabh aavan jaanee | All that is seen, is coming and going. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੇਈ ਸਾਹ ਸਚੇ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੩॥ seee saah sache vaapaaree satigur boojh bujhaaee he |13| They are the true bankers and traders, whom the True Guru has inspired to understand. ||13|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਬੁਝਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥ sabad bujhaae satigur pooraa | The Word of the Shabad is understood through the Perfect True Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਰਬ ਕਲਾ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਰਪੂਰਾ ॥ sarab kalaa saache bharapooraa | The True Lord is overflowing with all powers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਫਰਿਓ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ਸਦਾ ਤੂ ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਤਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੪॥ afario veparavaahu sadaa too naa tis til na tamaaee he |14| You are beyond our grasp, and forever independent. You do not have even an iota of greed. ||14|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਲੁ ਬਿਕਾਲੁ ਭਏ ਦੇਵਾਨੇ ॥ kaal bikaal bhe devaane | Birth and death are meaningless, for those - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਬਦੁ ਸਹਜ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਾਨੇ ॥ sabad sehaj ras antar maane | who enjoy the sublime celestial essence of the Shabad within their minds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਵਰਦਾਤਾ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੫॥ aape mukat tripat varadaataa bhagat bhaae man bhaaee he |15| He Himself is the Giver of liberation, satisfaction and blessings, to those devotees who love Him in their minds. ||15|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰਾਲਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥ aap niraalam gur gam giaanaa | He Himself is immaculate; by contact with the Guru, spiritual wisdom is obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥ jo deesai tujh maeh samaanaa | Whatever is seen, shall merge into You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨੀਚੁ ਭਿਖਿਆ ਦਰਿ ਜਾਚੈ ਮੈ ਦੀਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਡਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧੬॥੧॥ naanak neech bhikhiaa dar jaachai mai deejai naam vaddaaee he |16|1| Nanak, the lowly, begs for charity at Your Door; please, bless him with the glorious greatness of Your Name. ||16||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ maaroo mahalaa 1 | Maaroo, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਧਰਤੀ ਧਉਲੁ ਅਕਾਸੰ ॥ aape dharatee dhaul akaasan | He Himself is the earth, the mythical bull which supports it and the Akaashic ethers. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਪਰਗਾਸੰ ॥ aape saache gun paragaasan | The True Lord Himself reveals His Glorious Virtues. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਸੰਤੋਖੀ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੧॥ jatee satee santokhee aape aape kaar kamaaee he |1| He Himself is celibate, chaste and contented; He Himself is the Doer of deeds. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ॥ jis karanaa so kar kar vekhai | He who created the creation, beholds what He has created. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਮੇਟੈ ਸਾਚੇ ਲੇਖੈ ॥ koe na mettai saache lekhai | No one can erase the Inscription of the True Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ਆਪੇ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ aape kare karaae aape aape de vaddiaaee he |2| He Himself is the Doer, the Cause of causes; He Himself is the One who bestows glorious greatness. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਚ ਚੋਰ ਚੰਚਲ ਚਿਤੁ ਚਾਲਹਿ ॥ panch chor chanchal chit chaaleh | The five thieves cause the fickle consciousness to waver. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਘਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਲਹਿ ॥ par ghar joheh ghar nahee bhaaleh | It looks into the homes of others, but does not search its own home. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਨਗਰੁ ਢਹੈ ਢਹਿ ਢੇਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਪਤਿ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੩॥ kaaeaa nagar dtahai dteh dteree bin sabadai pat jaaee he |3| The body-village crumbles into dust; without the Word of the Shabad, one’s honor is lost. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣੁ ਸੂਝੈ ॥ gur te boojhai tribhavan soojhai | One who realizes the Lord through the Guru, comprehends the three worlds. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਸਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਨੈ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥ manasaa maar manai siau loojhai | He subdues his desires, and struggles with his mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤੁਧੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਤੁਧ ਹੀ ਜੇਹੇ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਬਾਲ ਸਖਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੪॥ jo tudh seveh se tudh hee jehe nirbhau baal sakhaaee he |4| Those who serve You, become just like You; O Fearless Lord, You are their best friend from infancy. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸੁਰਗੁ ਮਛੁ ਪਇਆਲਾ ॥ aape surag machh peaalaa | You Yourself are the heavenly realms, this world and the nether regions of the underworld. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪੇ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਬਾਲਾ ॥ aape jot saroopee baalaa | You Yourself are the embodiment of light, forever young. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਟਾ ਬਿਕਟ ਬਿਕਰਾਲ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਕਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੫॥ jattaa bikatt bikaraal saroopee roop na rekhiaa kaaee he |5| With matted hair, and a horrible, dreadful form, still, You have no form or feature. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੇਦ ਕਤੇਬੀ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ bed katebee bhed na jaataa | The Vedas and the Bible do not know the mystery of God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੁਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਾ ॥ naa tis maat pitaa sut bhraataa | He has no mother, father, child or brother. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਗਲੇ ਸੈਲ ਉਪਾਇ ਸਮਾਏ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖਣਾ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੬॥ sagale sail upaae samaae alakh na lakhanaa jaaee he |6| He created all the mountains, and levels them again; the Unseen Lord cannot be seen. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਕੀ ਮੀਤ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥ kar kar thaakee meet ghanere | I have grown weary of making so many friends. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਇ ਨ ਕਾਟੈ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਮੇਰੇ ॥ koe na kaattai avagun mere | No one can rid me of my sins and mistakes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਨਾਥੁ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੭॥ sur nar naath saahib sabhanaa sir bhaae milai bhau jaaee he |7| God is the Supreme Lord and Master of all the angels and mortal beings; blessed with His Love, their fear is dispelled. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੂਲੇ ਚੂਕੇ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥ bhoole chooke maarag paaveh | He puts back on the Path those who have wandered and strayed. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ॥ aap bhulaae toohai samajhaaveh | You Yourself make them stray, and You teach them again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਮੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾਵਹੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਹੇ ॥੮॥ bin naavai mai avar na deesai naavahu gat mit paaee he |8| I cannot see anything except the Name. Through the Name comes salvation and merit. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
