ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਪੂਅਰ ਤਾਪੈ ॥ antar agan na gur bin boojhai baahar pooar taapai | Without the Guru, the fire within is not quenched; and outside, the fire still burns. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੀ ਕਿਉ ਕਰਿ ਚੀਨਸਿ ਆਪੈ ॥ gur sevaa bin bhagat na hovee kiau kar cheenas aapai | Without serving the Guru, there is no devotional worship. How can anyone, by himself, know the Lord? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਸੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਜਾਪੈ ॥ nindaa kar kar narak nivaasee antar aatam jaapai | Slandering others, one lives in hell; within him is hazy darkness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਗੂਚਹਿ ਕਿਉ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਪੈ ਪਾਪੈ ॥੩॥ atthasatth teerath bharam vigoocheh kiau mal dhopai paapai |3| Wandering to the eixty-eight sacred shrines of pilgrimage, he is ruined. How can the filth of sin be washed away? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਛਾਣੀ ਖਾਕੁ ਬਿਭੂਤ ਚੜਾਈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮਗੁ ਜੋਹੈ ॥ chhaanee khaak bibhoot charraaee maaeaa kaa mag johai | He sifts through the dust, and applies ashes to his body, but he is searching for the path of Maya’s wealth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੇ ਤੇ ਛੋਹੈ ॥ antar baahar ek na jaanai saach kahe te chhohai | Inwardly and outwardly, he does not know the One Lord; if someone tells him the Truth, he grows angry. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਾਠੁ ਪੜੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਝੂਠੋ ਬੋਲੈ ਨਿਗੁਰੇ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਓਹੈ ॥ paatth parrai mukh jhoottho bolai nigure kee mat ohai | He reads the scriptures, but tells lies; such is the intellect of one who has no guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਈ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੪॥ naam na japee kiau sukh paavai bin naavai kiau sohai |4| Without chanting the Naam, how can he find peace? Without the Name, how can he look good? ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂੰਡੁ ਮੁਡਾਇ ਜਟਾ ਸਿਖ ਬਾਧੀ ਮੋਨਿ ਰਹੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾ ॥ moondd muddaae jattaa sikh baadhee mon rahai abhimaanaa | Some shave their heads, some keep their hair in matted tangles; some keep it in braids, while some keep silent, filled with egotistical pride. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਰਤ ਆਤਮ ਗਿਆਨਾ ॥ manooaa ddolai deh dis dhaavai bin rat aatam giaanaa | Their minds waver and wander in ten directions, without loving devotion and enlightenment of the soul. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ॥ amrit chhodd mahaa bikh peevai maaeaa kaa devaanaa | They abandon the Ambrosial Nectar, and drink the deadly poison, driven mad by Maya. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਸੂਆ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥੫॥ kirat na mittee hukam na boojhai pasooaa maeh samaanaa |5| Past actions cannot be erased; without understanding the Hukam of the Lord’s Command, they become beasts. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਾਥ ਕਮੰਡਲੁ ਕਾਪੜੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਉਪਜੀ ਭਾਰੀ ॥ haath kamanddal kaaparreea man trisanaa upajee bhaaree | With bowl in hand, wearing his patched coat, great desires well up in his mind. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਤਜਿ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥ eisatree taj kar kaam viaapiaa chit laaeaa par naaree | Abandoning his own wife, he is engrossed in sexual desire; his thoughts are on the wives of others. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਿਖ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਲੰਪਟੁ ਹੈ ਬਾਜਾਰੀ ॥ sikh kare kar sabad na cheenai lanpatt hai baajaaree | He teaches and preaches, but does not contemplate the Shabad; he is bought and sold on the street. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਨਿਭਰਾਤੀ ਤਾ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥੬॥ antar bikh baahar nibharaatee taa jam kare khuaaree |6| With poison within, he pretends to be free of doubt; he is ruined and humiliated by the Messenger of Death. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥ so saniaasee jo satigur sevai vichahu aap gavaae | He alone is a Sannyaasi, who serves the True Guru, and removes his self-conceit from within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਛਾਦਨ ਭੋਜਨ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਨ ਕਰਈ ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ chhaadan bhojan kee aas na karee achint milai so paae | He does not ask for clothes or food; without asking, he accepts whatever he receives. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਕੈ ਨ ਬੋਲੈ ਖਿਮਾ ਧਨੁ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਹੈ ਤਾਮਸੁ ਨਾਮਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥ bakai na bolai khimaa dhan sangrahai taamas naam jalaae | He does not speak empty words; he gathers in the wealth of tolerance, and burns away his anger with the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਧਨੁ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਜੋਗੀ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ॥੭॥ dhan girahee saniaasee jogee ji har charanee chit laae |7| Blessed is such a householder, Sannyaasi and Yogi, who focuses his consciousness on the Lord’s feet. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਸ ਨਿਰਾਸ ਰਹੈ ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਏਕਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥ aas niraas rahai saniaasee ekas siau liv laae | Amidst hope, the Sannyaasi remains unmoved by hope; he remains lovingly focused on the One Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਾਤਿ ਆਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਏ ॥ har ras peevai taa saat aavai nij ghar taarree laae | He drinks in the sublime essence of the Lord, and so finds peace and tranquility; in the home of his own being, he remains absorbed in the deep trance of meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੂਆ ਨ ਡੋਲੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਵਰਜਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥ manooaa na ddolai guramukh boojhai dhaavat varaj rahaae | His mind does not waver; as Gurmukh, he understands. He restrains it from wandering out. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਖੋਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੮॥ grihu sareer guramatee khoje naam padaarath paae |8| Following the Guru’s Teachings, he searches the home of his body, and obtains the wealth of the Naam. ||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਮਹੇਸੁ ਸਰੇਸਟ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ brahamaa bisan mahes saresatt naam rate veechaaree | Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are exalted, imbued with contemplative meditation on the Naam. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਾਣੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਗਗਨ ਪਤਾਲੀ ਜੰਤਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਤੁਮਾਰੀ ॥ khaanee baanee gagan pataalee jantaa jot tumaaree | The sources of creation, speech, the heavens and the underworld, all beings and creatures, are infused with Your Light. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਧੁਨਿ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਉਰ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ sabh sukh mukat naam dhun baanee sach naam ur dhaaree | All comforts and liberation are found in the Naam, and the vibrations of the Guru’s Bani; I have enshrined the True Name within my heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੀ ਤਰੁ ਤੂ ਤਾਰੀ ॥੯॥੭॥ naam binaa nahee chhoottas naanak saachee tar too taaree |9|7| Without the Naam, no one is saved; O Nanak, with the Truth, cross over to the other side. ||9||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਾਤ ਪਿਤਾ ਸੰਜੋਗਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਕਤੁ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਕਰੇ ॥ maat pitaa sanjog upaae rakat bind mil pindd kare | Through the union of mother and father, the fetus is formed. The egg and sperm join together to make the body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਗਰਭ ਉਰਧਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰੇ ਦਾਤਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥ antar garabh uradh liv laagee so prabh saare daat kare |1| Upside-down within the womb, it lovingly dwells on the Lord; God provides for it, and gives it nourishment there. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਕਿਉ ਤਰੈ ॥ sansaar bhavajal kiau tarai | How can he cross over the terrifying world-ocean? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਅਫਰਿਓ ਭਾਰੁ ਅਫਾਰੁ ਟਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ guramukh naam niranjan paaeeai afario bhaar afaar ttarai |1| rahaau | The Gurmukh obtains the Immaculate Naam, the Name of the Lord; the unbearable load of sins is removed. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੇ ਗੁਣ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਏ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਮੈ ਬਉਰਾ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਉ ਹਰੇ ॥ te gun visar ge aparaadhee mai bauraa kiaa krau hare | I have forgotten Your Virtues, Lord; I am insane - what can I do now? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਸਭੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦਾਤਿ ਸਮਾਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੨॥ too daataa deaal sabhai sir ahinis daat samaar kare |2| You are the Merciful Giver, above the heads of all. Day and night, You give gifts, and take care of all. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਲੈ ਜਗਿ ਜਨਮਿਆ ਸਿਵ ਸਕਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੁ ਧਰੇ ॥ chaar padaarath lai jag janamiaa siv sakatee ghar vaas dhare | One is born to achieve the four great objectives of life. The spirit has taken up its home in the material world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
