ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥ dhandhai dhaavat jag baadhiaa naa boojhai veechaar | The world is chasing after worldly affairs; caught and bound, it does not understand contemplative meditation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥ jaman maran visaariaa manamukh mugadh gavaar | The foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥ gur raakhe se ubare sachaa sabad veechaar |7| Those whom the Guru has protected are saved, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ soohatt pinjar prem kai bolai bolanahaar | In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਤ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥ sach chugai amrit peeai uddai ta ekaa vaar | It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥ gur miliai khasam pachhaaneeai kahu naanak mokh duaar |8|2| Meeting with the Guru, one recognizes his Lord and Master; says Nanak, he finds the gate of liberation. ||8||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਾ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਰੁ ਭਾਗੋ ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ sabad marai taa maar mar bhaago kis peh jaau | One who dies in the Word of the Shabad conquers death; otherwise, where can you run? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਡਰਿ ਭੈ ਭਾਗੀਐ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਾਉ ॥ jis kai ddar bhai bhaageeai amrit taa ko naau | Through the Fear of God, fear runs away; His Name is Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਰਹਿ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਤੂ ਬੀਜਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ maareh raakheh ek too beejau naahee thaau |1| You alone kill and protect; except for You, there is no place at all. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਾਬਾ ਮੈ ਕੁਚੀਲੁ ਕਾਚਉ ਮਤਿਹੀਨ ॥ baabaa mai kucheel kaachau matiheen | O Baba, I am filthy, shallow and totally without understanding. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਪੂਰੀ ਮਤਿ ਕੀਨ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ naam binaa ko kachh nahee gur poorai pooree mat keen |1| rahaau | Without the Naam, no one is anything; the Perfect Guru has made my intellect perfect. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਵਗਣਿ ਸੁਭਰ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਕਿਉ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਉ ॥ avagan subhar gun nahee bin gun kiau ghar jaau | I am full of faults, and I have no virtue at all. Without virtues, how can I go home? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਹਜਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਾਗਾ ਧਨੁ ਨਾਹਿ ॥ sehaj sabad sukh aoopajai bin bhaagaa dhan naeh | Through the Word of the Shabad, intuitive peace wells up; without good destiny, the wealth is not obtained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸੇ ਬਾਧੇ ਦੂਖ ਸਹਾਹਿ ॥੨॥ jin kai naam na man vasai se baadhe dookh sahaeh |2| Those whose minds are not filled with the Naam are bound and gagged, and suffer in pain. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਸੇ ਕਿਤੁ ਆਏ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ jinee naam visaariaa se kit aae sansaar | Those who have forgotten the Naam - why have they even come into the world? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਗਾਡੇ ਲਾਦੇ ਛਾਰੁ ॥ aagai paachhai sukh nahee gaadde laade chhaar | Here and hereafter, they do not find any peace; they have loaded their carts with ashes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਵਿਛੁੜਿਆ ਮੇਲਾ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਖੁ ਘਣੋ ਜਮ ਦੁਆਰਿ ॥੩॥ vichhurriaa melaa nahee dookh ghano jam duaar |3| Those who are separated, do not meet with the Lord; they suffer in terrible pain at Death’s Door. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਗੈ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਣਾ ਨਾਹਿ ਮੈ ਭੂਲੇ ਤੂ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥ agai kiaa jaanaa naeh mai bhoole too samajhaae | I do not know what will happen in the world hereafter; I am so confused - please teach me, Lord! - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੂਲੇ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਜੋ ਦਸੇ ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥ bhoole maarag jo dase tis kai laagau paae | I am confused; I would fall at the feet of one who shows me the Way. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੪॥ gur bin daataa ko nahee keemat kehan na jaae |4| Without the Guru, there is no giver at all; His value cannot be described. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੇਖਾ ਤਾ ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਠਾਇਓ ਲੇਖੁ ॥ saajan dekhaa taa gal milaa saach patthaaeo lekh | If I see my friend, then I will embrace Him; I have sent Him the letter of Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਮਾਣੈ ਧਨ ਖੜੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖੀ ਦੇਖੁ ॥ mukh dhimaanai dhan kharree guramukh aakhee dekh | His soul-bride stands waiting expectantly; as Gurmukh, I see Him with my eyes. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੂ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮਿ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥੫॥ tudh bhaavai too man vaseh nadaree karam visekh |5| By the Pleasure of Your Will, You abide in my mind, and bless me with Your Glance of Grace. ||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭੂਖ ਪਿਆਸੋ ਜੇ ਭਵੈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਮਾਗਉ ਦੇਇ ॥ bhookh piaaso je bhavai kiaa tis maagau dee | One who is wandering hungry and thirsty - what can he give, and what can anyone ask from him? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੀਜਉ ਸੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪੂਰਨੁ ਦੇਇ ॥ beejau soojhai ko nahee man tan pooran dee | I cannot conceive of any other, who can bless my mind and body with perfection. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਆ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਵਡਾਈ ਦੇਇ ॥੬॥ jin keea tin dekhiaa aap vaddaaee dee |6| The One who created me takes care of me; He Himself blesses me with glory. ||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਗਰੀ ਨਾਇਕੁ ਨਵਤਨੋ ਬਾਲਕੁ ਲੀਲ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥ nagaree naaeik navatano baalak leel anoop | In the body-village is my Lord and Master, whose body is ever-new, Innocent and child-like, incomparably playful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਰਿ ਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨ ਪੰਖਣੂ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ naar na purakh na pankhanoo saachau chatur saroop | He is neither a woman, nor a man, nor a bird; the True Lord is so wise and beautiful. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਤੂ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਤੂ ਧੂਪੁ ॥੭॥ jo tis bhaavai so theeai too deepak too dhoop |7| Whatever pleases Him, happens; You are the lamp, and You are the incense. ||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੀਤ ਸਾਦ ਚਾਖੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਬਾਦ ਸਾਦ ਤਨਿ ਰੋਗੁ ॥ geet saad chaakhe sune baad saad tan rog | He hears the songs and tastes the flavors, but these flavors are useless and insipid, and bring only disease to the body. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਾਚਉ ਚਵੈ ਛੂਟੈ ਸੋਗ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ॥ sach bhaavai saachau chavai chhoottai sog vijog | One who loves the Truth and speaks the Truth, escapes from the sorrow of separation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਗੁ ॥੮॥੩॥ naanak naam na veesarai jo tis bhaavai su hog |8|3| Nanak does not forget the Naam; whatever happens is by the Lord’s Will. ||8||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸਾਚੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵਣੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਲਾਲਚ ਬਾਦਿ ॥ saachee kaar kamaavanee hor laalach baad | Practice Truth - other greed and attachments are useless. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਾਚੈ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸਚਿ ਸਾਦਿ ॥ eihu man saachai mohiaa jihavaa sach saad | The True Lord has fascinated this mind, and my tongue enjoys the taste of Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਹੋਰਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਬਿਖੁ ਲਾਦਿ ॥੧॥ bin naavai ko ras nahee hor chaleh bikh laad |1| Without the Name, there is no juice; the others depart, loaded with poison. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਐਸਾ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਕੋ ਸੁਣਿ ਖਸਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥ aisaa laalaa mere laal ko sun khasam hamaare | I am such a slave of Yours, O my Beloved Lord and Master. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਫੁਰਮਾਵਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਲਾਲ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jiau furamaaveh tiau chalaa sach laal piaare |1| rahaau | I walk in harmony with Your Command, O my True, Sweet Beloved. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਲਾਲੇ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਗੋਲੇ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੀਰਾ ॥ anadin laale chaakaree gole sir meeraa | Night and day, the slave works for his overlord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਵੇਚਿਆ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥ gur bachanee man vechiaa sabad man dheeraa | I have sold my mind for the Word of the Guru’s Shabad; my mind is comforted and consoled by the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
