ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ॥ baajh guroo gubaaraa | Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ mil satigur nisataaraa |2| Meeting with the True Guru, one is emancipated. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਣੇ ॥ hau hau karam kamaane | All the deeds done in egotism, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇ ਤੇ ਬੰਧ ਗਲਾਣੇ ॥ te te bandh galaane | are just chains around the neck. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਧਾਰੀ ॥ meree meree dhaaree | Harboring self-conceit and self-interest - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਓਹਾ ਪੈਰਿ ਲੋਹਾਰੀ ॥ ohaa pair lohaaree | is just like placing chains around one’s ankles. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥ so gur mil ek pachhaanai | He alone meets with the Guru, and realizes the One Lord, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਭਾਗੁ ਮਥਾਣੈ ॥੩॥ jis hovai bhaag mathaanai |3| who has such destiny written on his forehead. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ॥ so miliaa ji har man bhaaeaa | He alone meets the Lord, who is pleasing to His Mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਭੂਲਾ ਜਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਭੁਲਾਇਆ ॥ so bhoolaa ji prabhoo bhulaaeaa | He alone is deluded, who is deluded by God. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਆਪਹੁ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ neh aapahu moorakh giaanee | No one, by himself, is ignorant or wise. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿ ਕਰਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਨੀ ॥ ji karaavai su naam vakhaanee | He alone chants the Naam, whom the Lord inspires to do so. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰਾ ॥ teraa ant na paaraavaaraa | You have no end or limitation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੭॥ jan naanak sad balihaaraa |4|1|17| Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to You. ||4||1||17|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਲੀਏ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਨੀਆ ॥ mohanee mohi lee trai guneea | Maya, the enticer, has enticed the world of the three gunas, the three qualities. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਲੋਭਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ਝੂਠੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ॥ lobh viaapee jhootthee duneea | The false world is engrossed in greed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੰਚੀ ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਸਗਲ ਲੇ ਛਲੀਆ ॥੧॥ meree meree kar kai sanchee ant kee baar sagal le chhaleea |1| Crying out, “Mine, mine!” they collect possessions, but in the end, they are all deceived. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੁ ਦਇਅਲੀਆ ॥ nirbhau nirankaar deialeea | The Lord is fearless, formless and merciful. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਗਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਲੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jeea jant sagale pratipaleea |1| rahaau | He is the Cherisher of all beings and creatures. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕੈ ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਗਾਡੀ ਗਡਹੈ ॥ ekai sram kar gaaddee gaddahai | Some collect wealth, and bury it in the ground. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕਹਿ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਦਾਮੁ ਨ ਛਡਹੈ ॥ ekeh supanai daam na chhaddahai | Some cannot abandon wealth, even in their dreams. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਜੁ ਕਮਾਇ ਕਰੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਥੈਲੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਚੰਚਲਿ ਚਲੀਆ ॥੨॥ raaj kamaae karee jin thailee taa kai sang na chanchal chaleea |2| The king exercises his power, and fills his money-bags, but this fickle companion will not go along with him. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣ ਪਿੰਡ ਤੇ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥ ekeh praan pindd te piaaree | Some love this wealth even more than their body and breath of life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਸੰਚੀ ਤਜਿ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥ ek sanchee taj baap mahataaree | Some collect it, forsaking their fathers and mothers. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੁਤ ਮੀਤ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਤੇ ਗੁਹਜੀ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਖਲੀਆ ॥੩॥ sut meet bhraat te guhajee taa kai nikatt na hoee khaleea |3| Some hide it from their children, friends and siblings, but it will not remain with them. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਇ ਅਉਧੂਤ ਬੈਠੇ ਲਾਇ ਤਾਰੀ ॥ hoe aaudhoot baitthe laae taaree | Some become hermits, and sit in meditative trances. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਜਤੀ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥ jogee jatee panddit beechaaree | Some are Yogis, celibates, religious scholars and thinkers. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਮੜੀ ਮਸਾਣੀ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਊਠਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਕੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਪਲੀਆ ॥੪॥ grihi marree masaanee ban meh basate aootth tinaa kai laagee paleea |4| Some dwell in homes, graveyards, cremation grounds and forests; but Maya still clings to them there. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਟੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਜਾ ਕੇ ॥ kaatte bandhan tthaakur jaa ke | When the Lord and Master releases one from his bonds, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਸਿਓ ਜੀਅ ਤਾ ਕੈ ॥ har har naam basio jeea taa kai | the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, comes to dwell in his soul. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਭਏ ਜਨ ਮੁਕਤੇ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਲੀਆ ॥੫॥੨॥੧੮॥ saadhasang bhe jan mukate gat paaee naanak nadar nihaleea |5|2|18| In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, His humble servants are liberated; O Nanak, they are redeemed and enraptured by the Lord’s Glance of Grace. ||5||2||18|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਿਮਰਹੁ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸੋਊ ॥ simarahu ek niranjan soaoo | Meditate in remembrance on the One Immaculate Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਕੋਊ ॥ jaa te birathaa jaat na koaoo | No one is turned away from Him empty-handed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਰਿਆ ॥ maat garabh meh jin pratipaariaa | He cherished and preserved you in your mother’s womb; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਦੇ ਸਾਜਿ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ jeeo pindd de saaj savaariaa | He blessed you with body and soul, and embellished you. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਖਿਨੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਜਪੀਐ ॥ soee bidhaataa khin khin japeeai | Each and every instant, meditate on that Creator Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਅਵਗੁਣ ਸਭਿ ਢਕੀਐ ॥ jis simarat avagun sabh dtakeeai | Meditating in remembrance on Him, all faults and mistakes are covered. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਰਣ ਕਮਲ ਉਰ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਰਹੁ ॥ charan kamal ur antar dhaarahu | Enshrine the Lord’s lotus feet deep within the nucleus of your self. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਨ ਤੇ ਜੀਉ ਉਧਾਰਹੁ ॥ bikhiaa ban te jeeo udhaarahu | Save your soul from the waters of corruption. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਣ ਪਲਾਹ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਬਿਲਲਾਟਾ ॥ karan palaah mitteh bilalaattaa | Your cries and shrieks shall be ended; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਪਿ ਗੋਵਿਦ ਭਰਮੁ ਭਉ ਫਾਟਾ ॥ jap govid bharam bhau faattaa | meditating on the Lord of the Universe, your doubts and fears shall be dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥ saadhasang viralaa ko paae | Rare is that being, who finds the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਏ ॥੧॥ naanak taa kai bal bal jaae |1| Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to Him. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਆਧਾਰਾ ॥ raam naam man tan aadhaaraa | The Lord’s Name is the support of my mind and body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਸਿਮਰੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jo simarai tis kaa nisataaraa |1| rahaau | Whoever meditates on Him is emancipated. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਵਸਤੁ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥ mithiaa vasat sat kar maanee | He believes that the false thing is true. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਸਠ ਮੂੜ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ॥ hit laaeo satth moorr agiaanee | The ignorant fool falls in love with it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭ ਮਦ ਮਾਤਾ ॥ kaam krodh lobh mad maataa | He is intoxicated with the wine of sexual desire, anger and greed; - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਉਡੀ ਬਦਲੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਤਾ ॥ kauddee badalai janam gavaataa | he loses this human life in exchance for a mere shell. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅਪਨਾ ਛੋਡਿ ਪਰਾਇਐ ਰਾਤਾ ॥ apanaa chhodd paraaeiai raataa | He abandons his own, and loves that of others. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਮਦ ਮਨ ਤਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਤਾ ॥ maaeaa mad man tan sang jaataa | His mind and body are permeated with the intoxication of Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ਕਰਤ ਕਲੋਲਾ ॥ trisan na boojhai karat kalolaa | His thirsty desires are not quenched, although he indulges in pleasures. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਊਣੀ ਆਸ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਭਿ ਬੋਲਾ ॥ aoonee aas mithiaa sabh bolaa | His hopes are not fulfilled, and all his words are false. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਵਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ਜਾਤ ਇਕੇਲਾ ॥ aavat ikelaa jaat ikelaa | He comes alone, and he goes alone. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
