ਬੇਦੁ ਪੁਕਾਰੈ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੰਡਤ ਕਾਮਾਮਨ ਕਾ ਮਾਠਾ ॥ bed pukaarai mukh te panddat kaamaaman kaa maatthaa | The Pandit, the religious scholar, proclaims the Vedas, but he is slow to act on them. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੋਨੀ ਹੋਇ ਬੈਠਾ ਇਕਾਂਤੀ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਕਲਪਨ ਗਾਠਾ ॥ monee hoe baitthaa ikaantee hiradai kalapan gaatthaa | Another person on silence sits alone, but his heart is tied in knots of desire. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹੋਇ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਚਲਿਓ ਛੁਟਕੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਾਠਾ ॥੧॥ hoe udaasee grihu taj chalio chhuttakai naahee naatthaa |1| Another becomes an Udaasi, a renunciate; he abandons his home and walks out on his family, but his wandering impulses do not leave him. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਕੈ ਪਹਿ ਬਾਤ ਕਹਾ ॥ jeea kee kai peh baat kahaa | Who can I tell about the state of my soul? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਆਪਿ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਐਸੋ ਕਹਾ ਲਹਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ aap mukat mo kau prabh mele aiso kahaa lahaa |1| rahaau | Where can I find such a person who is liberated, and who can unite me with my God? ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਪਸੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਦੇਹੀ ਸਾਧੀ ਮਨੂਆ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਧਾਨਾ ॥ tapasee kar kai dehee saadhee manooaa deh dis dhaanaa | Someone may practice intensive meditation, and discipline his body, but his mind still runs around in ten directions. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਚਜੁ ਕੀਨਾ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਭਇਆ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥ brahamachaar brahamachaj keenaa hiradai bheaa gumaanaa | The celibate practices celibacy, but his heart is filled with pride. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੰਨਿਆਸੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿਓ ਉਸੁ ਮਹਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥੨॥ saniaasee hoe kai teerath bhramio us meh krodh bigaanaa |2| The Sannyaasi wanders around at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, but his mindless anger is still within him. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਘੂੰਘਰ ਬਾਧਿ ਭਏ ਰਾਮਦਾਸਾ ਰੋਟੀਅਨ ਕੇ ਓਪਾਵਾ ॥ ghoonghar baadh bhe raamadaasaa rotteean ke opaavaa | The temple dancers tie bells around their ankles to earn their living. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਬਰਤ ਨੇਮ ਕਰਮ ਖਟ ਕੀਨੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਦਿਖਾਵਾ ॥ barat nem karam khatt keene baahar bhekh dikhaavaa | Others go on fasts, take vows, perform the six rituals and wear religious robes for show. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਗੀਤ ਨਾਦ ਮੁਖਿ ਰਾਗ ਅਲਾਪੇ ਮਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਵਾ ॥੩॥ geet naad mukh raag alaape man nahee har har gaavaa |3| Some sing songs and melodies and hymns, but their minds do not sing of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਲੋਭ ਮੋਹ ਰਹਤ ਹਹਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੰਤਾ ॥ harakh sog lobh moh rehat heh niramal har ke santaa | The Lord’s Saints are immaculately pure; they are beyond pleasure and pain, beyond greed and attachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਨ ਕੀ ਧੂੜਿ ਪਾਏ ਮਨੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਜਾ ਦਇਆ ਕਰੇ ਭਗਵੰਤਾ ॥ tin kee dhoorr paae man meraa jaa deaa kare bhagavantaa | My mind obtains the dust of their feet, when the Lord God shows mercy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਉਤਰੀ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ॥੪॥ kahu naanak gur pooraa miliaa taan utaree man kee chintaa |4| Says Nanak, I met the Perfect Guru, and then the anxiety of my mind was removed. ||4|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮੇਰਾ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇਆ ॥ meraa antarajaamee har raaeaa | My Sovereign Lord is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕੋਟਿ ਲਾਖ ਸਰਬ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੁਮਾਰਾ ॥ kott laakh sarab ko raajaa jis hiradai naam tumaaraa | One who has Your Name in his heart is the king of all the hundreds of thousands and millions of beings. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਦੀਆ ਮੇਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਗਾਵਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ jaa kau naam na deea merai satigur se mar janameh gaavaaraa |1| Those, whom my True Guru has not blessed with Your Name, are poor idiots, who die and are reborn. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਚੀਤਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਪਤਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਰਲੀਐ ਖਾਕੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ cheet aaveh tab hee pat pooree bisarat raleeai khaak |1| rahaau | When You come to mind, Lord, then I obtain perfect honor. Forgetting You, I roll in the dust. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਮਨ ਭੋਗਣ ਤੇ ਤੇ ਛਿਦ੍ਰ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ॥ roop rang khuseea man bhogan te te chhidr vikaaraa | The mind’s pleasures of love and beauty bring just as many blames and sins. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਕਲਿਆਣਾ ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜੁ ਇਹੁ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥ har kaa naam nidhaan kaliaanaa sookh sehaj ihu saaraa |2| The Name of the Lord is the treasure of Emancipation; it is absolute peace and poise. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਾਇਆ ਰੰਗ ਬਿਰੰਗ ਖਿਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਦਰ ਕੀ ਛਾਇਆ ॥ maaeaa rang birang khinai meh jiau baadar kee chhaaeaa | The pleasures of Maya fade away in an instant, like the shade of a passing cloud. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੇ ਲਾਲ ਭਏ ਗੂੜੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇਆ ॥੩॥ se laal bhe goorrai rang raate jin gur mil har har gaaeaa |3| They alone are dyed in the deep crimson of the Lord’s Love, who meet the Guru, and sing the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||3|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਅਪਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅਗਮ ਦਰਬਾਰਾ ॥ aooch mooch apaar suaamee agam darabaaraa | My Lord and Master is lofty and exalted, grand and infinite. The Darbaar of His Court is inaccessible. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਮੋ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸੋਭਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥੪॥੭॥੧੬॥ naamo vaddiaaee sobhaa naanak khasam piaaraa |4|7|16| Through the Naam, glorious greatness and respect are obtained; O Nanak, my Lord and Master is my Beloved. ||4||7||16|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਓਅੰਕਾਰਿ ਉਤਪਾਤੀ ॥ oankaar utapaatee | The One Universal Creator Lord created the creation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕੀਆ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਸਭ ਰਾਤੀ ॥ keea dinas sabh raatee | He made all the days and the nights. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਵਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਣੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਪਾਣੀ ॥ van trin tribhavan paanee | The forests, meadows, three worlds, water, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਚਾਰਿ ਬੇਦ ਚਾਰੇ ਖਾਣੀ ॥ chaar bed chaare khaanee | the four Vedas, the four sources of creation, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੰਡ ਦੀਪ ਸਭਿ ਲੋਆ ॥ khandd deep sabh loaa | the countries, the continents and all the worlds, - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਏਕ ਕਵਾਵੈ ਤੇ ਸਭਿ ਹੋਆ ॥੧॥ ek kavaavai te sabh hoaa |1| have all come from the One Word of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰਾ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਰੇ ॥ karanaihaaraa boojhahu re | Hey - understand the Creator Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕੀਆ ਪਸਾਰਾ ॥ trai gun keea pasaaraa | He formed the expanse of the entire universe from the three gunas, the three qualities. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥ narak surag avataaraa | People are incarnated in heaven and in hell. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਉਮੈ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਈ ॥ haumai aavai jaaee | In egotism, they come and go. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
