ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥ maaroo mahalaa 1 | Maaroo, First Mehl: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁਲ ਖਰੀਦੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਭਾਗਾ ॥ mul khareedee laalaa golaa meraa naau sabhaagaa | I am Your slave, Your bonded servant, and so I am called fortunate. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਚਨੀ ਹਾਟਿ ਬਿਕਾਨਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥੧॥ gur kee bachanee haatt bikaanaa jit laaeaa tith laagaa |1| I sold myself at Your store in exchange for the Guru’s Word; whatever You link me to, to that I am linked. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੇ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਿਆ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥ tere laale kiaa chaturaaee | What cleverness can Your servant try with You? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ saahib kaa hukam na karanaa jaaee |1| rahaau | O my Lord and Master, I cannot carry out the Hukam of Your Command. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾ ਲਾਲੀ ਪਿਉ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਹਉ ਲਾਲੇ ਕਾ ਜਾਇਆ ॥ maa laalee piau laalaa meraa hau laale kaa jaaeaa | My mother is Your slave, and my father is Your slave; I am the child of Your slaves. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਾਲੀ ਨਾਚੈ ਲਾਲਾ ਗਾਵੈ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਉ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਇਆ ॥੨॥ laalee naachai laalaa gaavai bhagat krau teree raaeaa |2| My slave mother dances, and my slave father sings; I practice devotional worship to You, O my Sovereign Lord. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੀਅਹਿ ਤ ਪਾਣੀ ਆਣੀ ਮੀਰਾ ਖਾਹਿ ਤ ਪੀਸਣ ਜਾਉ ॥ peeeh ta paanee aanee meeraa khaeh ta peesan jaau | If You wish to drink, then I shall get water for You; if You wish to eat, I shall grind the corn for You. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਖਾ ਫੇਰੀ ਪੈਰ ਮਲੋਵਾ ਜਪਤ ਰਹਾ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੩॥ pakhaa feree pair malovaa japat rahaa teraa naau |3| I wave the fan over You, and wash Your feet, and continue to chant Your Name. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੂਣ ਹਰਾਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਬਖਸਿਹਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ loon haraamee naanak laalaa bakhasihi tudh vaddiaaee | I have been untrue to myself, but Nanak is Your slave; please forgive him, by Your glorious greatness. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਆਦਿ ਜੁਗਾਦਿ ਦਇਆਪਤਿ ਦਾਤਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥੬॥ aad jugaad deaapat daataa tudh vin mukat na paaee |4|6| Since the very beginning of time, and throughout the ages, You have been the merciful and generous Lord. Without You, liberation cannot be attained. ||4||6|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਭੂਤਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਤਾਲਾ ॥ koee aakhai bhootanaa ko kahai betaalaa | Some call him a ghost; some say that he is a demon. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਈ ਆਖੈ ਆਦਮੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ koee aakhai aadamee naanak vechaaraa |1| Some call him a mere mortal; O, poor Nanak! ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਇਆ ਦਿਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥ bheaa divaanaa saah kaa naanak bauraanaa | Crazy Nanak has gone insane, after his Lord, the King. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ hau har bin avar na jaanaa |1| rahaau | I know of none other than the Lord. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਭੈ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ tau devaanaa jaaneeai jaa bhai devaanaa hoe | He alone is known to be insane, when he goes insane with the Fear of God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਬਾਹਰਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੨॥ ekee saahib baaharaa doojaa avar na jaanai koe |2| He recognizes none other than the One Lord and Master. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਏਕਾ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਇ ॥ tau devaanaa jaaneeai jaa ekaa kaar kamaae | He alone is known to be insane, if he works for the One Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਦੂਜੀ ਅਵਰ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਕਾਇ ॥੩॥ hukam pachhaanai khasam kaa doojee avar siaanap kaae |3| Recognizing the Hukam, the Command of his Lord and Master, what other cleverness is there? ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਦੇਵਾਨਾ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਜਾ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਧਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥ tau devaanaa jaaneeai jaa saahib dhare piaar | He alone is known to be insane, when he falls in love with his Lord and Master. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੰਦਾ ਜਾਣੈ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੭॥ mandaa jaanai aap kau avar bhalaa sansaar |4|7| He sees himself as bad, and all the rest of the world as good. ||4||7|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥ eihu dhan sarab rahiaa bharapoor | This wealth is all-pervading, permeating all. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਿ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥੧॥ manamukh fireh si jaaneh door |1| The self-willed manmukh wanders around, thinking that it is far away. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਹਮਾਰੈ ॥ so dhan vakhar naam ridai hamaarai | That commodity, the wealth of the Naam, is within my heart. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਦੇਹਿ ਤਿਸੈ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ jis too dehi tisai nisataarai |1| rahaau | Whoever You bless with it, is emancipated. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਤਸਕਰੁ ਲੈ ਜਾਇ ॥ n ihu dhan jalai na tasakar lai jaae | This wealth does not burn; it cannot be stolen by a thief. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਡੂਬੈ ਨ ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥੨॥ n ihu dhan ddoobai na is dhan kau milai sajaae |2| This wealth does not drown, and its owner is never punished. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਕੀ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ eis dhan kee dekhahu vaddiaaee | Gaze upon the glorious greatness of this wealth, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥ sahaje maate anadin jaaee |3| and your nights and days will pass, imbued with celestial peace. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕ ਬਾਤ ਅਨੂਪ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਨਰ ਭਾਈ ॥ eik baat anoop sunahu nar bhaaee | Listen to this incomparably beautiful story, O my brothers, O Siblings of Destiny. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਸੁ ਧਨ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਨੈ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੪॥ eis dhan bin kahahu kinai param gat paaee |4| Tell me, without this wealth, who has ever obtained the supreme status? ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅਕਥ ਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥ bhanat naanak akath kee kathaa sunaae | Nanak humbly prays, I proclaim the Unspoken Speech of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥੮॥ satigur milai ta ihu dhan paae |5|8| If one meets the True Guru, then this wealth is obtained. ||5||8|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੂਰ ਸਰੁ ਸੋਸਿ ਲੈ ਸੋਮ ਸਰੁ ਪੋਖਿ ਲੈ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਰਤੁ ਸੁ ਸਨਬੰਧੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥ soor sar sos lai som sar pokh lai jugat kar marat su sanabandh keejai | Heat up the sun energy of the right nostril, and cool down the moon energy of the left nostril; practicing this breath-control, bring them into perfect balance. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੀਨ ਕੀ ਚਪਲ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਮਨੁ ਰਾਖੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਨਹ ਹੰਸੁ ਨਹ ਕੰਧੁ ਛੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ meen kee chapal siau jugat man raakheeai uddai neh hans neh kandh chheejai |1| In this way, the fickle fish of the mind will be held steady; the swan-soul shall not fly away, and the body-wall will not crumble. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੂੜੇ ਕਾਇਚੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾ ॥ moorre kaaeiche bharam bhulaa | You fool, why are you deluded by doubt? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਹ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ neh cheeniaa paramaanand bairaagee |1| rahaau | You do not remember the detached Lord of supreme bliss. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਜਰ ਗਹੁ ਜਾਰਿ ਲੈ ਅਮਰ ਗਹੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਲੈ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ਤਜਿ ਛੋਡਿ ਤਉ ਅਪਿਉ ਪੀਜੈ ॥ ajar gahu jaar lai amar gahu maar lai bhraat taj chhodd tau apiau peejai | Seize and burn the unbearable; seize and kill the imperishable; leave behind your doubts, and then, you shall drink in the Nectar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
