ਪਾਪ ਪਥਰ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥ paap pathar taran na jaaee | Sin is a stone which does not float. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਉ ਬੇੜਾ ਜੀਉ ਚੜਾਊ ॥ bhau berraa jeeo charraaoo | So let the Fear of God be the boat to carry your soul across. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵੈ ਕਾਹੂ ॥੪॥੨॥ kahu naanak devai kaahoo |4|2| Says Nanak, rare are those who are blessed with this Boat. ||4||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਦੁਇ ਲੇਖ ਪਏ ॥ karanee kaagad man masavaanee buraa bhalaa due lekh pe | Actions are the paper, and the mind is the ink; good and bad are both recorded upon it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਚਲਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਚਲੀਐ ਤਉ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਹਰੇ ॥੧॥ jiau jiau kirat chalaae tiau chaleeai tau gun naahee ant hare |1| As their past actions drive them, so are mortals driven. There is no end to Your Glorious Virtues, Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚਿਤ ਚੇਤਸਿ ਕੀ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਵਰਿਆ ॥ chit chetas kee nahee baavariaa | Why do you not keep Him in your consciousness, you mad man? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਤੇਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਲਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har bisarat tere gun galiaa |1| rahaau | Forgetting the Lord, your own virtues shall rot away. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਾਲੀ ਰੈਨਿ ਜਾਲੁ ਦਿਨੁ ਹੂਆ ਜੇਤੀ ਘੜੀ ਫਾਹੀ ਤੇਤੀ ॥ jaalee rain jaal din hooaa jetee gharree faahee tetee | The night is a net, and the day is a net; there are as many traps as there are moments. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਸਿ ਰਸਿ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗਹਿ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਸਹਿ ਛੂਟਸਿ ਮੂੜੇ ਕਵਨ ਗੁਣੀ ॥੨॥ ras ras chog chugeh nit faaseh chhoottas moorre kavan gunee |2| With relish and delight, you continually bite at the bait; you are trapped, you fool - how will you ever escape? ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਆਰਣੁ ਮਨੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਲੋਹਾ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਤਿਤੁ ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹੀ ॥ kaaeaa aaran man vich lohaa panch agan tith laag rahee | The body is a furnace, and the mind is the iron within it; the five fires are heating it. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕੋਇਲੇ ਪਾਪ ਪੜੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਜਲਿਆ ਸੰਨੑੀ ਚਿੰਤ ਭਈ ॥੩॥ koeile paap parre tis aoopar man jaliaa sanaee chint bhee |3| Sin is the charcoal placed upon it, which burns the mind; the tongs are anxiety and worry. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਇਆ ਮਨੂਰੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤਿਨੇਹਾ ॥ bheaa manoor kanchan fir hovai je gur milai tinehaa | What was turned to slag is again transformed into gold, if one meets with the Guru. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਓਹੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਤਉ ਨਾਨਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਟਸਿ ਦੇਹਾ ॥੪॥੩॥ ek naam amrit ohu devai tau naanak trisattas dehaa |4|3| He blesses the mortal with the Ambrosial Name of the One Lord, and then, O Nanak, the body is held steady. ||4||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਬਿਮਲ ਮਝਾਰਿ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਰੇ ॥ bimal majhaar basas niramal jal padaman jaaval re | In the pure, immaculate waters, both the lotus and the slimy scum are found. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਦਮਨਿ ਜਾਵਲ ਜਲ ਰਸ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਦੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ padaman jaaval jal ras sangat sang dokh nahee re |1| The lotus flower is with the scum and the water, but it remains untouched by any pollution. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਦਾਦਰ ਤੂ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਰੇ ॥ daadar too kabeh na jaanas re | You frog, you will never understand. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਖਸਿ ਸਿਬਾਲੁ ਬਸਸਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਜਲ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨ ਲਖਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ bhakhas sibaal basas niramal jal amrit na lakhas re |1| rahaau | You eat the dirt, while you dwell in the immaculate waters. You know nothing of the ambrosial nectar there. ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਸੁ ਜਲ ਨਿਤ ਨ ਵਸਤ ਅਲੀਅਲ ਮੇਰ ਚਚਾ ਗੁਨ ਰੇ ॥ bas jal nit na vasat aleeal mer chachaa gun re | You dwell continually in the water; the bumble bee does not dwell there, but it is intoxicated with its fragrance from afar. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੰਦ ਕੁਮੁਦਨੀ ਦੂਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਸਸਿ ਅਨਭਉ ਕਾਰਨਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥ chand kumudanee doorahu nivasas anbhau kaaran re |2| Intuitively sensing the moon in the distance, the lotus bows its head. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਖੰਡੁ ਦੂਧਿ ਮਧੁ ਸੰਚਸਿ ਤੂ ਬਨ ਚਾਤੁਰ ਰੇ ॥ amrit khandd doodh madh sanchas too ban chaatur re | The realms of nectar are irrigated with milk and honey; you think you are clever to live in the water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਪਿਸਨ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੩॥ apanaa aap too kabahu na chhoddas pisan preet jiau re |3| You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the love of the flea for blood. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਸਹਿ ਜਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਗਮ ਸਾਸ ਸੁਨੇ ॥ panddit sang vaseh jan moorakh aagam saas sune | The fool may live with the Pandit, the religious scholar, and listen to the Vedas and the Shaastras. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਪਨਾ ਆਪੁ ਤੂ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਸਿ ਸੁਆਨ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਿਉ ਰੇ ॥੪॥ apanaa aap too kabahu na chhoddas suaan poochh jiau re |4| You can never escape your own inner tendencies, like the crooked tail of the dog. ||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਇਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣੀ ਰੇ ॥ eik paakhanddee naam na raacheh ik har har charanee re | Some are hypocrites; they do not merge with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. Some are absorbed in the Feet of the Lord, Har, Har. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਸਨਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਰੇ ॥੫॥੪॥ poorab likhiaa paavas naanak rasanaa naam jap re |5|4| The mortals obtain what they are predestined to receive; O Nanak, with your tongue, chant the Naam. ||5||4|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਪਤਿਤ ਪੁਨੀਤ ਅਸੰਖ ਹੋਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗ ॥ patit puneet asankh hohi har charanee man laag | Countless sinners are sanctified, attaching their minds to the Feet of the Lord. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਠਸਠਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਮੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗ ॥੧॥ atthasatth teerath naam prabh naanak jis masatak bhaag |1| The merits of the sixty-eight places of pilgrimage are found in God’s Name, O Nanak, when such destiny is inscribed upon one’s forehead. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੁਣਿ ਸਹ ਕੀ ਇਕ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ॥੧॥ sun seh kee ik baat suhelee |1| listen to this one joyous story of your Husband Lord. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋ ਮੈ ਬੇਦਨ ਸਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਆਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥ jo mai bedan saa kis aakhaa maaee | Who can I tell about my pain, O my mother? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਰਿ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਉ ਨ ਰਹੈ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਾਖਾ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ har bin jeeo na rahai kaise raakhaa maaee |1| rahaau | Without the Lord, my soul cannot survive; how can I comfort it, O my mother? ||1||Pause|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਉ ਦੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਖਰੀ ਰੰਞਾਣੀ ॥ hau dohaagan kharee ranyaanee | I am a dejected, discarded bride, totally miserable. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਗਇਆ ਸੁ ਜੋਬਨੁ ਧਨ ਪਛੁਤਾਣੀ ॥੨॥ geaa su joban dhan pachhutaanee |2| I have lost my youth; I regret and repent. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤੂ ਦਾਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਮੇਰਾ ॥ too daanaa saahib sir meraa | You are my wise Lord and Master, above my head. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਖਿਜਮਤਿ ਕਰੀ ਜਨੁ ਬੰਦਾ ਤੇਰਾ ॥੩॥ khijamat karee jan bandaa teraa |3| I serve You as Your humble slave. ||3|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਣਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਏਹੀ ॥ bhanat naanak andesaa ehee | Nanak humbly prays, this is my only concern: - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੈਸੇ ਰਵਉ ਸਨੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੫॥ bin darasan kaise rvau sanehee |4|5| without the Blessed Vision of my Beloved, how can I enjoy Him? ||4||5|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
