ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥ salok mahalaa 5 | Salok, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਅਮਿਉ ਰਸੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ amrit baanee amiau ras amrit har kaa naau | The Bani of the Guru’s Word is Ambrosial Nectar; its taste is sweet. The Name of the Lord is Ambrosial Nectar. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥ man tan hiradai simar har aatth pehar gun gaau | Meditate in remembrance on the Lord in your mind, body and heart; twenty-four hours a day, sing His Glorious Praises. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਚਾ ਇਹੈ ਸੁਆਉ ॥ aupades sunahu tum gurasikhahu sachaa ihai suaau | Listen to these Teachings, O Sikhs of the Guru. This is the true purpose of life. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਲਾਇਹੁ ਭਾਉ ॥ janam padaarath safal hoe man meh laaeihu bhaau | This priceless human life will be made fruitful; embrace love for the Lord in your mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸੂਖ ਸਹਜ ਆਨਦੁ ਘਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਪਤਿਆ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ sookh sehaj aanad ghanaa prabh japatiaa dukh jaae | Celestial peace and absolute bliss come when one meditates on God - suffering is dispelled. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ naanak naam japat sukh aoopajai daragah paaeeai thaau |1| O Nanak, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, peace wells up, and one obtains a place in the Court of the Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ਮਤਿ ਦੇਇ ॥ naanak naam dhiaaeeai gur pooraa mat dee | O Nanak, meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; this is the Teaching imparted by the Perfect Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਕਢਿ ਲੇਇ ॥ bhaanai jap tap sanjamo bhaanai hee kadt lee | In the Lord’s Will, they practice meditation, austerity and self-discipline; in the Lord’s Will, they are released. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਨਿ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਬਖਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ bhaanai jon bhavaaeeai bhaanai bakhas karee | In the Lord’s Will, they are made to wander in reincarnation; in the Lord’s Will, they are forgiven. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਭੋਗੀਐ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ bhaanai dukh sukh bhogeeai bhaanai karam karee | In the Lord’s Will, pain and pleasure are experienced; in the Lord’s Will, actions are performed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਮਿਟੀ ਸਾਜਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਜੋਤਿ ਧਰੇਇ ॥ bhaanai mittee saaj kai bhaanai jot dharee | In the Lord’s Will, clay is fashioned into form; in the Lord’s Will, His Light is infused into it. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਾਇਦਾ ਭਾਣੈ ਮਨਹਿ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ bhaanai bhog bhogaaeidaa bhaanai maneh karee | In the Lord’s Will, enjoyments are enjoyed; in the Lord’s Will, these enjoyments are denied. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਅਉਤਾਰੇ ਭਾਣੈ ਧਰਣਿ ਪਰੇਇ ॥ bhaanai narak surag aautaare bhaanai dharan paree | In the Lord’s Will, they are incarnated in heaven and hell; in the Lord’s Will, they fall to the ground. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਭਾਣੈ ਹੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਗਤੀ ਲਾਏ ਨਾਨਕ ਵਿਰਲੇ ਹੇ ॥੨॥ bhaanai hee jis bhagatee laae naanak virale he |2| In the Lord’s Will, they are committed to His devotional worship and Praise; O Nanak, how rare are these! ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਵਡਿਆਈ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣੇ ॥ vaddiaaee sache naam kee hau jeevaa sun sune | Hearing, hearing of the glorious greatness of the True Name, I live. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਸੂ ਪਰੇਤ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਉਧਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਖਣੇ ॥ pasoo paret agiaan udhaare ik khane | Even ignorant beasts and goblins can be saved, in an instant. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਰੈਣਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ਸਦਾ ਸਦ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥ dinas rain teraa naau sadaa sad jaapeeai | Day and night, chant the Name, forever and ever. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਭੁਖ ਵਿਕਰਾਲ ਨਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਧ੍ਰਾਪੀਐ ॥ trisanaa bhukh vikaraal naae terai dhraapeeai | The most horrible thirst and hunger is satisfied through Your Name, O Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਰੋਗੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਵੰਞੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਨਾਉ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ॥ rog sog dukh vanyai jis naau man vasai | Disease, sorrow and pain run away, when the Name dwells within the mind. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਲਾਲੁ ਜੋ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਰਸੈ ॥ tiseh paraapat laal jo gurasabadee rasai | He alone attains his Beloved, who loves the Word of the Guru’s Shabad. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਖੰਡ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੰਡ ਬੇਅੰਤ ਉਧਾਰਣਹਾਰਿਆ ॥ khandd brahamandd beant udhaaranahaariaa | The worlds and solar systems are saved by the Infinite Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤੇਰੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਤੁਧੁ ਸਚੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ॥੧੨॥ teree sobhaa tudh sache mere piaariaa |12| Your glory is Yours alone, O my Beloved True Lord. ||12|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਛਡਿ ਗਵਾਇਆ ਰੰਗਿ ਕਸੁੰਭੈ ਭੁਲੀ ॥ mitru piaaraa naanak jee mai chhadd gavaaeaa rang kasunbhai bhulee | I abandoned and lost my Beloved Friend, O Nanak; I was fooled by the transitory color of the safflower, which fades away. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਉ ਸਜਣ ਕੀ ਮੈ ਕੀਮ ਨ ਪਉਦੀ ਹਉ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਢੁ ਨ ਲਹਦੀ ॥੧॥ tau sajan kee mai keem na paudee hau tudh bin adt na lahadee |1| I did not know Your value, O my Friend; without You, I am not worth even half a shell. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਸੁ ਵਿਰਾਇਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਸਸੁਰਾ ਵਾਦੀ ਜੇਠੋ ਪਉ ਪਉ ਲੂਹੈ ॥ sas viraaein naanak jeeo sasuraa vaadee jettho pau pau loohai | My mother-in-law is my enemy, O Nanak; my father-in-law is argumentative and my brother-in-law burns me at every step. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਭੇ ਭਸੁ ਪੁਣੇਦੇ ਵਤਨੁ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਸਜਣੁ ਤੂਹੈ ॥੨॥ habhe bhas punede vatan jaa mai sajan toohai |2| They can all just play in the dust, when You are my Friend, O Lord. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਦਰਦੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਣੋ ॥ jis too vutthaa chit tis darad nivaarano | You relieve the pains of those, within whose consciousness You dwell, O Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਵੁਠਾ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਹਾਰਣੋ ॥ jis too vutthaa chit tis kade na haarano | Those, within whose consciousness You dwell, never lose. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਸੁ ਸਰਪਰ ਤਾਰਣੋ ॥ jis miliaa pooraa guroo su sarapar taarano | One who meets the Perfect Guru will surely be saved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲਾਏ ਸਚਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਚੁ ਸਮੑਾਲਣੋ ॥ jis no laae sach tis sach samaalano | One who is attached to Truth, contemplates Truth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਇਆ ਹਥਿ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਸੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਾਲਣੋ ॥ jis aaeaa hath nidhaan su rahiaa bhaalano | One, into whose hands the treasure comes, stops searching. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਇਕੋ ਰੰਗੁ ਭਗਤੁ ਸੋ ਜਾਨਣੋ ॥ jis no iko rang bhagat so jaanano | He alone is known as a devotee, who loves the One Lord. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਓਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ਬਿਰਹੀ ਚਾਰਣੋ ॥ ohu sabhanaa kee ren birahee chaarano | He is the dust under the feet of all; he is the lover of the Lord’s feet. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਤੇਰੇ ਚੋਜ ਵਿਡਾਣ ਸਭੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਾਰਣੋ ॥੧੩॥ sabh tere choj viddaan sabh teraa kaarano |13| Everything is Your wonderful play; the whole creation is Yours. ||13|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਉਸਤਤਿ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀ ਮੈ ਹਭ ਵਞਾਈ ਛੋੜਿਆ ਹਭੁ ਕਿਝੁ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥ ausatat nindaa naanak jee mai habh vayaaee chhorriaa habh kijh tiaagee | I have totally discarded praise and slander, O Nanak; I have forsaken and abandoned everything. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਹਭੇ ਸਾਕ ਕੂੜਾਵੇ ਡਿਠੇ ਤਉ ਪਲੈ ਤੈਡੈ ਲਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ habhe saak koorraave dditthe tau palai taiddai laagee |1| I have seen that all relationships are false, and so I have grasped hold of the hem of Your robe, Lord. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਫਿਰਦੀ ਫਿਰਦੀ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਉ ਹਉ ਫਾਵੀ ਥੀਈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦਿਸਾਵਰ ਪੰਧਾ ॥ firadee firadee naanak jeeo hau faavee theeee bahut disaavar pandhaa | I wandered and wandered and went crazy, O Nanak, in countless foreign lands and pathways. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
ਤਾ ਹਉ ਸੁਖਿ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ਸੁਤੀ ਜਾ ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਜਣੁ ਮੈ ਲਧਾ ॥੨॥ taa hau sukh sukhaalee sutee jaa gur mil sajan mai ladhaa |2| But then, I slept in peace and comfort, when I met the Guru, and found my Friend. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
