ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਦਰਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ jan naanak mangai daan ik dehu daras man piaar |2| Servant Nanak begs for this one gift: please bless me, Lord, with the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan; my mind is in love with You. ||2|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸ ਨੋ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖ ॥ jis too aaveh chit tis no sadaa sukh | One who is conscious of You finds everlasting peace. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਮ ਨਾਹਿ ਦੁਖ ॥ jis too aaveh chit tis jam naeh dukh | One who is conscious of You does not suffer at the hands of the Messenger of Death. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਿ ਕਾੜਿਆ ॥ jis too aaveh chit tis ki kaarriaa | One who is conscious of You is not anxious. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਕਰਤਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸਭਿ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ jis daa karataa mitru sabh kaaj savaariaa | One who has the Creator as his Friend - all his affairs are resolved. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਜਨੁ ॥ jis too aaveh chit so paravaan jan | One who is conscious of You is renowned and respected. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਧਨੁ ॥ jis too aaveh chit bahutaa tis dhan | One who is conscious of You becomes very wealthy. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਸੋ ਵਡ ਪਰਵਾਰਿਆ ॥ jis too aaveh chit so vadd paravaariaa | One who is conscious of You has a great family. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਸੁ ਤੂ ਆਵਹਿ ਚਿਤਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਕੁਲ ਉਧਾਰਿਆ ॥੬॥ jis too aaveh chit tin kul udhaariaa |6| One who is conscious of You saves his ancestors. ||6|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥ salok mahalaa 5 | Salok, Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅੰਦਰਹੁ ਅੰਨਾ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਅੰਨਾ ਕੂੜੀ ਕੂੜੀ ਗਾਵੈ ॥ andarahu anaa baaharahu anaa koorree koorree gaavai | Blind inwardly, and blind outwardly, he sings falsely, falsely. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਦੇਹੀ ਧੋਵੈ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਬਣਾਏ ਮਾਇਆ ਨੋ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਵੈ ॥ dehee dhovai chakr banaae maaeaa no bahu dhaavai | He washes his body, and draws ritual marks on it, and totally runs after wealth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ andar mail na utarai haumai fir fir aavai jaavai | But the filth of his egotism is not removed from within, and over and over again, he comes and goes in reincarnation. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨੀਂਦ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਕਾਮਿ ਸੰਤਾਪਿਆ ਮੁਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥ neend viaapiaa kaam santaapiaa mukhahu har har kahaavai | Engulfed in sleep, and tormented by frustrated sexual desire, he chants the Lord’s Name with his mouth. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਬੈਸਨੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਮ ਹਉ ਜੁਗਤਾ ਤੁਹ ਕੁਟੇ ਕਿਆ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ baisano naam karam hau jugataa tuh kutte kiaa fal paavai | He is called a Vaishnav, but he is bound to deeds of egotism; by threshing only husks, what rewards can be obtained? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਹੰਸਾ ਵਿਚਿ ਬੈਠਾ ਬਗੁ ਨ ਬਣਈ ਨਿਤ ਬੈਠਾ ਮਛੀ ਨੋ ਤਾਰ ਲਾਵੈ ॥ hansaa vich baitthaa bag na banee nit baitthaa machhee no taar laavai | Sitting among the swans, the crane does not become one of them; sitting there, he keeps staring at the fish. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਾ ਹੰਸ ਸਭਾ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਤਾ ਬਗਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਜੋੜੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ jaa hans sabhaa veechaar kar dekhan taa bagaa naal jorr kade na aavai | And when the gathering of swans looks and sees, they realize that they can never form an alliance with the crane. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਹੰਸਾ ਹੀਰਾ ਮੋਤੀ ਚੁਗਣਾ ਬਗੁ ਡਡਾ ਭਾਲਣ ਜਾਵੈ ॥ hansaa heeraa motee chuganaa bag ddaddaa bhaalan jaavai | The swans peck at the diamonds and pearls, while the crane chases after frogs. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਉਡਰਿਆ ਵੇਚਾਰਾ ਬਗੁਲਾ ਮਤੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਮੰਞੁ ਲਖਾਵੈ ॥ auddariaa vechaaraa bagulaa mat hovai many lakhaavai | The poor crane flies away, so that his secret will not be exposed. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਕਿਸੁ ਦੋਸੁ ਦਿਚੈ ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ jit ko laaeaa tith hee laagaa kis dos dichai jaa har evai bhaavai | Whatever the Lord attaches one to, to that he is attached. Who is to blame, when the Lord wills it so? - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਵਰੁ ਰਤਨੀ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਪਾਵੈ ॥ satigur saravar ratanee bharapoore jis praapat so paavai | The True Guru is the lake, overflowing with pearls. One who meets the True Guru obtains them. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਿਖ ਹੰਸ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਇਕਠੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਹੁਕਮਾਵੈ ॥ sikh hans saravar ikatthe hoe satigur kai hukamaavai | The Sikh-swans gather at the lake, according to the Will of the True Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਮਾਣਕ ਸਰਵਰਿ ਭਰਪੂਰੇ ਖਾਇ ਖਰਚਿ ਰਹੇ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ ratan padaarath maanak saravar bharapoore khaae kharach rahe tott na aavai | The lake is filled with the wealth of these jewels and pearls; they are spent and consumed, but they never run out. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਰਵਰ ਹੰਸੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ਕਰਤੇ ਏਵੈ ਭਾਵੈ ॥ saravar hans door na hoee karate evai bhaavai | The swan never leaves the lake; such is the Pleasure of the Creator’s Will. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸ ਦੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸੋ ਸਿਖੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਪਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥ jan naanak jis dai masatak bhaag dhur likhiaa so sikh guroo peh aavai | O servant Nanak, one who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead - that Sikh comes to the Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਆਪਿ ਤਰਿਆ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਸਭਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਸਭਾ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਛਡਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ aap tariaa kuttanb sabh taare sabhaa srisatt chhaddaavai |1| He saves himself, and saves all his generations as well; he emancipates the whole world. ||1|| - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਮਃ ੫ ॥ mahalaa 5 | Fifth Mehl: - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਆਖਾਏ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਹੀ ਕੋਰੜ ਮੋਠ ਜਿਨੇਹਾ ॥ panddit aakhaae bahutee raahee korarr motth jinehaa | He is called a Pandit, a religious scholar, and yet he wanders along many pathways. He is as hard as uncooked beans. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਅੰਦਰਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਨਿਤ ਭਰਮਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਤਿਸਟਸਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੇਹਾ ॥ andar mohu nit bharam viaapiaa tisattas naahee dehaa | He is filled with attachment, and constantly engrossed in doubt; his body cannot hold still. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਕੂੜੀ ਆਵੈ ਕੂੜੀ ਜਾਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਨਿਤ ਜੋਹਾ ॥ koorree aavai koorree jaavai maaeaa kee nit johaa | False is his coming, and false is his going; he is continually on the lookout for Maya. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਤਾ ਛੋਹੋ ਆਵੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਹੁਤਾ ਰੋਹਾ ॥ sach kahai taa chhoho aavai antar bahutaa rohaa | If someone speaks the truth, then he is aggravated; he is totally filled with anger. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਕੁਬੁਧਿ ਕੁਮੂੜਾ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਤਿਸੁ ਮੋਹਾ ॥ viaapiaa duramat kubudh kumoorraa man laagaa tis mohaa | The evil fool is engrossed in evil-mindedness and false intellectualizations; his mind is attached to emotional attachment. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਠਗੈ ਸੇਤੀ ਠਗੁ ਰਲਿ ਆਇਆ ਸਾਥੁ ਭਿ ਇਕੋ ਜੇਹਾ ॥ tthagai setee tthag ral aaeaa saath bhi iko jehaa | The deceiver abides with the five deceivers; it is a gathering of like minds. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸਰਾਫੁ ਨਦਰੀ ਵਿਚਦੋ ਕਢੈ ਤਾਂ ਉਘੜਿ ਆਇਆ ਲੋਹਾ ॥ satigur saraaf nadaree vichado kadtai taan ugharr aaeaa lohaa | And when the Jeweller, the True Guru, appraises him, then he is exposed as mere iron. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਬਹੁਤੇਰੀ ਥਾਈ ਰਲਾਇ ਰਲਾਇ ਦਿਤਾ ਉਘੜਿਆ ਪੜਦਾ ਅਗੈ ਆਇ ਖਲੋਹਾ ॥ bahuteree thaaee ralaae ralaae ditaa ugharriaa parradaa agai aae khalohaa | Mixed and mingled with others, he was passed off as genuine in many places; but now, the veil has been lifted, and he stands naked before all. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਜੇ ਸਰਣੀ ਆਵੈ ਫਿਰਿ ਮਨੂਰਹੁ ਕੰਚਨੁ ਹੋਹਾ ॥ satigur kee je saranee aavai fir manoorahu kanchan hohaa | One who comes to the Sanctuary of the True Guru, shall be transformed from iron into gold. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਾਨੇ ਅਉਗਣ ਕਟੇ ਕਰੇ ਸੁਧੁ ਦੇਹਾ ॥ satigur niravair putr satr samaane aaugan katte kare sudh dehaa | The True Guru has no anger or vengeance; He looks upon son and enemy alike. Removing faults and mistakes, He purifies the human body. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਨਾਲਿ ਸਨੇਹਾ ॥ naanak jis dhur masatak hovai likhiaa tis satigur naal sanehaa | O Nanak, one who has such pre-ordained destiny inscribed upon his forehead, is in love with the True Guru. - Guru Arjan Dev Ji
