ਪਉੜੀ ॥ paurree | Pauree: - Guru Amardas Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਗੜੁ ਕੋਟੁ ਹੈ ਸਭਿ ਦਿਸੰਤਰ ਦੇਸਾ ॥ kaaeaa andar garr kott hai sabh disantar desaa | Deep within the body is the fortress of the Lord, and all lands and countries. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਤਾੜੀ ਲਾਈਅਨੁ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਪਰਵੇਸਾ ॥ aape taarree laaeean sabh meh paravesaa | He Himself sits in primal, profound Samaadhi; He Himself is all-pervading. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀਅਨੁ ਆਪਿ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਰਖੇਸਾ ॥ aape srisatt saajeean aap gupat rakhesaa | He Himself created the Universe, and He Himself remains hidden within it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਰਗਟੀਏਸਾ ॥ gur sevaa te jaaniaa sach paragatteesaa | Serving the Guru, the Lord is known, and the Truth is revealed. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥੧੬॥ sabh kichh sacho sach hai gur sojhee paaee |16| He is True, the Truest of the True; the Guru has imparted this understanding. ||16|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਸਾਵਣੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਅਹਾੜੁ ਦਿਹੁ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਦੁਇ ਖੇਤ ॥ saavan raat ahaarr dihu kaam krodh due khet | Night is the summer season, and day is the winter season; sexual desire and anger are the two fields planted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲਬੁ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਦਰੋਗੁ ਬੀਉ ਹਾਲੀ ਰਾਹਕੁ ਹੇਤ ॥ lab vatr darog beeo haalee raahak het | Greed prepares the soil, and the seed of falsehood is planted; attachment and love are the farmer and hired hand. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਲੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਵਿਕਾਰ ਮਣ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਖਟੇ ਖਾਇ ॥ hal beechaar vikaar man hukamee khatte khaae | Contemplation is the plow, and corruption is the harvest; this is what one earns and eats, according to the Hukam of the Lord’s Command. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਲੇਖੈ ਮੰਗਿਐ ਅਉਤੁ ਜਣੇਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ naanak lekhai mangiai aaut janedaa jaae |1| O Nanak, when one is called to give his account, he will be barren and infertile. ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਭਉ ਭੁਇ ਪਵਿਤੁ ਪਾਣੀ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਬਲੇਦ ॥ bhau bhue pavit paanee sat santokh baled | Make the Fear of God the farm, purity the water, truth and contentment the cows and bulls, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹਲੁ ਹਲੇਮੀ ਹਾਲੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਚੇਤਾ ਵਤ੍ਰ ਵਖਤ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥ hal halemee haalee chit chetaa vatr vakhat sanjog | humility the plow, consciousness the plowman, remembrance the preparation of the soil, and union with the Lord the planting time. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਉ ਬੀਜੁ ਬਖਸੀਸ ਬੋਹਲ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਗਲ ਦਰੋਗ ॥ naau beej bakhasees bohal duneea sagal darog | Let the Lord’s Name be the seed, and His Forgiving Grace the harvest. Do this, and the whole world will seem false. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਵਿਜੋਗ ॥੨॥ naanak nadaree karam hoe jaaveh sagal vijog |2| O Nanak, if He bestows His Merciful Glance of Grace, then all your separation will be ended. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਮੋਹੁ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਬੋਲੈ ॥ manamukh mohu gubaar hai doojai bhaae bolai | The self-willed manmukh is trapped in the darkness of emotional attachment; in the love of duality he speaks. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਨਿਤ ਨੀਰੁ ਵਿਰੋਲੈ ॥ doojai bhaae sadaa dukh hai nit neer virolai | The love of duality brings pain forever; he churns the water endlessly. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਮਥਿ ਤਤੁ ਕਢੋਲੈ ॥ guramukh naam dhiaaeeai math tat kadtolai | The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord; he churns, and obtains the essence of reality. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਟੋਲੈ ॥ antar paragaas ghatt chaananaa har ladhaa ttolai | The Divine Light illuminates his heart deep within; he seeks the Lord, and obtains Him. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇਦਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੭॥ aape bharam bhulaaeidaa kichh kehan na jaaee |17| He Himself deludes in doubt; no one can comment on this. ||17|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥ naanak chintaa mat karahu chintaa tis hee hee | O Nanak, don’t be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜੰਤ ਉਪਾਇਅਨੁ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਰੋਜੀ ਦੇਇ ॥ jal meh jant upaaeian tinaa bhi rojee dee | He created the creatures in water, and He gives them their nourishment. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਓਥੈ ਹਟੁ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਰਸ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ othai hatt na chalee naa ko kiras karee | There are no stores open there, and no one farms there. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਸਉਦਾ ਮੂਲਿ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਨਾ ਕੋ ਲਏ ਨ ਦੇਇ ॥ saudaa mool na hovee naa ko le na dee | No business is ever transacted there, and no one buys or sells. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਆਹਾਰੁ ਜੀਅ ਖਾਣਾ ਏਹੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ jeea kaa aahaar jeea khaanaa ehu karee | Animals eat other animals; this is what the Lord has given them as food. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਵਿਚਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਸਾਇਰਾ ਤਿਨਾ ਭਿ ਸਾਰ ਕਰੇਇ ॥ vich upaae saaeiraa tinaa bhi saar karee | He created them in the oceans, and He provides for them as well. - Guru Angad Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਮਤ ਕਰਹੁ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਤਿਸ ਹੀ ਹੇਇ ॥੧॥ naanak chintaa mat karahu chintaa tis hee hee |1| O Nanak, don’t be anxious; the Lord will take care of you. ||1|| - Guru Angad Dev Ji

ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਜੀਉ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਝੀਵਰੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਕਾਲੁ ॥ naanak ihu jeeo machhulee jheevar trisanaa kaal | O Nanak, this soul is the fish, and death is the hungry fisherman. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਨੂਆ ਅੰਧੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਈ ਪੜੈ ਅਚਿੰਤਾ ਜਾਲੁ ॥ manooaa andh na chetee parrai achintaa jaal | The blind man does not even think of this. And suddenly, the net is cast. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਚਿਤੁ ਅਚੇਤੁ ਹੈ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਬਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥ naanak chit achet hai chintaa badhaa jaae | O Nanak, his consciousness is unconscious, and he departs, bound by anxiety. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਜੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੨॥ nadar kare je aapanee taa aape le milaae |2| But if the Lord bestows His Glance of Grace, then He unites the soul with Himself. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੇ ਜਨ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਜਿਨੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਾ ॥ se jan saache sadaa sadaa jinee har ras peetaa | They are true, forever true, who drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ॥ guramukh sachaa man vasai sach saudaa keetaa | The True Lord abides in the mind of the Gurmukh; He strikes the true bargain. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਘਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੀਤਾ ॥ sabh kichh ghar hee maeh hai vaddabhaagee leetaa | Everything is in the home of the self within; only the very fortunate obtain it. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਮਰਿ ਗਈ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੀਤਾ ॥ antar trisanaa mar gee har gun gaaveetaa | The hunger within is conquered and overcome, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ਦੇਇ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੧੮॥ aape mel milaaeian aape dee bujhaaee |18| He Himself unites in His Union; He Himself blesses them with understanding. ||18|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਵੇਲਿ ਪਿੰਞਾਇਆ ਕਤਿ ਵੁਣਾਇਆ ॥ vel pinyaaeaa kat vunaaeaa | The cotton is ginned, woven and spun; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਟਿ ਕੁਟਿ ਕਰਿ ਖੁੰਬਿ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥ katt kutt kar khunb charraaeaa | the cloth is laid out, washed and bleached white. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਲੋਹਾ ਵਢੇ ਦਰਜੀ ਪਾੜੇ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਸੀਵੈ ॥ lohaa vadte darajee paarre sooee dhaagaa seevai | The tailor cuts it with his scissors, and sews it with his thread. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਇਉ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਟੀ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸੀਪੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤ ਜੀਵੈ ॥ eiau pat paattee sifatee seepai naanak jeevat jeevai | Thus, the torn and tattered honor is sewn up again, through the Lord’s Praise, O Nanak, and one lives the true life. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਕਪੜੁ ਪਾਟੈ ਸੂਈ ਧਾਗਾ ਗੰਢੈ ॥ hoe puraanaa kaparr paattai sooee dhaagaa gandtai | Becoming worn, the cloth is torn; with needle and thread it is sewn up again. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮਾਹੁ ਪਖੁ ਕਿਹੁ ਚਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਘੜੀ ਮੁਹਤੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹੰਢੈ ॥ maahu pakh kihu chalai naahee gharree muhat kichh handtai | It will not last for a month, or even a week. It barely lasts for an hour, or even a moment. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
