ਵਿਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਪੀਰੈ ਕੋ ਥਾਇ ਨ ਪਾਈ ॥ vin gur peerai ko thaae na paaee | Without the Guru or a spiritual teacher, no one is accepted. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਰਾਹੁ ਦਸਾਇ ਓਥੈ ਕੋ ਜਾਇ ॥ raahu dasaae othai ko jaae | They may be shown the way, but only a few go there. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਭਿਸਤਿ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥ karanee baajhahu bhisat na paae | Without the karma of good actions, heaven is not attained. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੋਗੀ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਦਸਾਈ ॥ jogee kai ghar jugat dasaaee | The Way of Yoga is demonstrated in the Yogi’s monastery. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਕਨਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਈ ॥ tit kaaran kan mundraa paaee | They wear ear-rings to show the way. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਪਾਇ ਫਿਰੈ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥ mundraa paae firai sansaar | Wearing ear-rings, they wander around the world. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਥੈ ਕਿਥੈ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥ jithai kithai sirajanahaar | The Creator Lord is everywhere. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜੇਤੇ ਜੀਅ ਤੇਤੇ ਵਾਟਾਊ ॥ jete jeea tete vaattaaoo | There are as many travellers as there are beings. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੀਰੀ ਆਈ ਢਿਲ ਨ ਕਾਊ ॥ cheeree aaee dtil na kaaoo | When one’s death warrant is issued, there is no delay. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਏਥੈ ਜਾਣੈ ਸੁ ਜਾਇ ਸਿਞਾਣੈ ॥ ethai jaanai su jaae siyaanai | One who knows the Lord here, realizes Him there as well. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਹੋਰੁ ਫਕੜੁ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਣੈ ॥ hor fakarr hindoo musalamaanai | Others, whether Hindu or Muslim, are just babbling. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਦਰਿ ਲੇਖਾ ਹੋਇ ॥ sabhanaa kaa dar lekhaa hoe | Everyone’s account is read in the Court of the Lord; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਰਣੀ ਬਾਝਹੁ ਤਰੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥ karanee baajhahu tarai na koe | without the karma of good actions, no one crosses over. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਚੋ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਇ ॥ sacho sach vakhaanai koe | One who speaks the True Name of the True Lord, - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਗੈ ਪੁਛ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥ naanak agai puchh na hoe |2| O Nanak, is not called to account hereafter. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਕਾਇਆ ਕੋਟੁ ਗੜੁ ॥ har kaa mandar aakheeai kaaeaa kott garr | The fortress of the body is called the Mansion of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਲਾਲ ਜਵੇਹਰੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਪੜੁ ॥ andar laal javeharee guramukh har naam parr | The rubies and gems are found within it; the Gurmukh chants the Name of the Lord. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਅਤਿ ਸੋਹਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦਿੜੁ ॥ har kaa mandar sareer at sohanaa har har naam dirr | The body, the Mansion of the Lord, is very beautiful, when the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, is implanted deep within. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਆਪਿ ਖੁਆਇਅਨੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਨਿਤ ਕੜੁ ॥ manamukh aap khuaaeian maaeaa moh nit karr | The self-willed manmukhs ruin themselves; they boil continuously in attachment to Maya. - Guru Amardas Ji
ਸਭਨਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੈ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੧੧॥ sabhanaa saahib ek hai poorai bhaag paaeaa jaaee |11| The One Lord is the Master of all. He is found only by perfect destiny. ||11|| - Guru Amardas Ji

ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਜੰਤ ਫਿਰਹਿ ॥ naa sat dukheea naa sat sukheea naa sat paanee jant fireh | There is no Truth in suffering, there is no Truth in comfort. There is no Truth in wandering like animals through the water. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁਡਾਈ ਕੇਸੀ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਪੜਿਆ ਦੇਸ ਫਿਰਹਿ ॥ naa sat moondd muddaaee kesee naa sat parriaa des fireh | There is no Truth in shaving one’s head; there is no Truth is studying the scriptures or wandering in foreign lands. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਰੁਖੀ ਬਿਰਖੀ ਪਥਰ ਆਪੁ ਤਛਾਵਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਸਹਹਿ ॥ naa sat rukhee birakhee pathar aap tachhaaveh dukh saheh | There is no Truth in trees, plants or stones, in mutilating oneself or suffering in pain. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਹਸਤੀ ਬਧੇ ਸੰਗਲ ਨਾ ਸਤਿ ਗਾਈ ਘਾਹੁ ਚਰਹਿ ॥ naa sat hasatee badhe sangal naa sat gaaee ghaahu chareh | There is no Truth in binding elephants in chains; there is no Truth in grazing cows. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸੁ ਹਥਿ ਸਿਧਿ ਦੇਵੈ ਜੇ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੇਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਆਇ ਮਿਲੈ ॥ jis hath sidh devai je soee jis no dee tis aae milai | He alone grants it, whose hands hold spritual perfection; he alone receives it, unto whom it is given. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਾਈ ਜਿਸੁ ਘਟ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਵੈ ॥ naanak taa kau milai vaddaaee jis ghatt bheetar sabad ravai | O Nanak, he alone is blessed with glorious greatness, whose heart is filled with the Word of the Shabad. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸਭਿ ਘਟ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਉ ਸਭਨਾ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਖੁਆਈ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਹੈ ॥ sabh ghatt mere hau sabhanaa andar jiseh khuaaee tis kaun kahai | God says, all hearts are mine, and I am in all hearts. Who can explain this to one who is confused? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਲਾ ਵਾਟੜੀ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭੁਲਾਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥ jiseh dikhaalaa vaattarree tiseh bhulaavai kaun | Who can confuse that being, unto whom I have shown the Way? - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਿਸਹਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ਪੰਧ ਸਿਰਿ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥੧॥ jiseh bhulaaee pandh sir tiseh dikhaavai kaun |1| And who can show the Path to that being whom I have confused since the beginning of time? ||1|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜੋ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰੈ ॥ so girahee jo nigrahu karai | He alone is a householder, who restrains his passions - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਕਰੈ ॥ jap tap sanjam bheekhiaa karai | and begs for meditation, austerity and self-discipline. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪੁੰਨ ਦਾਨ ਕਾ ਕਰੇ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥ pun daan kaa kare sareer | He gives donations to charity with his body; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਗੰਗਾ ਕਾ ਨੀਰੁ ॥ so girahee gangaa kaa neer | such a householder is as pure as the water of the Ganges. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੋਲੈ ਈਸਰੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ bolai eesar sat saroop | Says Eeshar, the Lord is the embodiment of Truth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਪਰਮ ਤੰਤ ਮਹਿ ਰੇਖ ਨ ਰੂਪੁ ॥੨॥ param tant meh rekh na roop |2| The supreme essence of reality has no shape or form. ||2|| - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੀ ਜੋ ਧੂਪੈ ਆਪੁ ॥ so aaudhootee jo dhoopai aap | He alone is a detached hermit, who burns away his self-conceit. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਭਿਖਿਆ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੰਤਾਪੁ ॥ bhikhiaa bhojan karai santaap | He begs for suffering as his food. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਉਹਠ ਪਟਣ ਮਹਿ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਕਰੈ ॥ aauhatth pattan meh bheekhiaa karai | In the city of the heart, he begs for charity. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੋ ਅਉਧੂਤੀ ਸਿਵ ਪੁਰਿ ਚੜੈ ॥ so aaudhootee siv pur charrai | Such a renunciate ascends to the City of God. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੋਲੈ ਗੋਰਖੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ bolai gorakh sat saroop | Says Gorakh, God is the embodiment of Truth; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਜਿ ਪਾਲੇ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥ so udaasee ji paale udaas | He alone is an Udasi, a shaven-headed renunciate, who embraces renunciation. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਅਰਧ ਉਰਧ ਕਰੇ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਵਾਸੁ ॥ aradh uradh kare niranjan vaas | He sees the Immaculate Lord dwelling in both the upper and lower regions. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਚੰਦ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਪਾਏ ਗੰਢਿ ॥ chand sooraj kee paae gandt | He balances the sun and the moon energies. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਤਿਸੁ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਕਾ ਪੜੈ ਨ ਕੰਧੁ ॥ tis udaasee kaa parrai na kandh | The body-wall of such an Udasi does not collapse. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਬੋਲੈ ਗੋਪੀ ਚੰਦੁ ਸਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥ bolai gopee chand sat saroop | Says Gopi Chand, God is the embodiment of Truth; - Guru Nanak Dev Ji

ਸੋ ਪਾਖੰਡੀ ਜਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਪਖਾਲੇ ॥ so paakhanddee ji kaaeaa pakhaale | He alone is a Paakhandi, who cleanses his body of filth. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਕਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਅਗਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਪਰਜਾਲੇ ॥ kaaeaa kee agan braham parajaale | The fire of his body illuminates God within. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
ਸੁਪਨੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਨ ਦੇਈ ਝਰਣਾ ॥ supanai bind na deee jharanaa | He does not waste his energy in wet dreams. - Guru Nanak Dev Ji
